There's a debate between hispanistas on wether or not spain ever had "colonies" or if new spain, peru and colombia were just kingdoms under the same monarchy much like aragon and Castile.

What'd you think?

I'm not really sure how the government of Spain worked around that time. What I do know is that I don't blame the spaniards for raping women in the new world. Indigenous women can be really hot

Obviously colonies as there was an entire ecosystem set up to kill natives and extract resources.
Missions
>used to push out their claim to land
>indoctrinate locals to by forcing them to attend church and abandon their religion/native language
>natives who came to trade would bring back diseases from the farm animals
Presidios
>also used to push out their claim to land
>used as military outposts from where raids could be conducted and existing settler colonies could be protected
Haciendas
>center of wealth extraction
>large estates where high-ranking officials would build massive plantations, factories or gold mines
>mestizos, mixed breeds, indians all forced to work on these for their peninsular masters

Though they may have had their equivalent forms back in Spain, the structure and aims of these were far different as they sought to completely erase the native culture wherever possible while also sending back gold and other exotic goods to the elite of Spaniard society

The Aztec language was the official language of New Spain until the Hapsburgs who used the country solely to pay off their debt and still went bankrupt.

they don’t have it because they were incredibly stupid with their money and whole empire really, the only reason they won was because of social and technological reasons. Its why napoleon rolled over them so fast and never thought of them again.
>>214525573
i mean the other city-states didnt help spain steal the gold they helped spain fight the tenochcka hegemony then spain pulled the under new management maneuver
personally im most sad about the destroyed amoxcalli especially their works on astrology and philosophy, well never get that back. Even if the gods and religious beliefs were preserved in spanish writings and the peoples traditions better than most dead religions, we’ll never really get their metaphysical outlook back.

Maybe in the first stage of conquest when local indigenous noblemen who supported the conquest were still around and conquerors had sovereignty over their conquests.
Under Borbon rule that was totally supressed if not before. The new dynasty favored French style of rule and that meant turning the american posesions into colonies.

How would that not make them colonies? It was settled by Spaniards for Spain. A colony does not have to be some subjugated half-occupied territory. See Greek colonies, for example.

Yes but not like India

Spanish imperialism was carried out to expand feudalistic mode of production with merchantilist elements. It was semi feudal imperialism

The british didnt establish landed aristocracy in India, herein they exploited India by extracting surplus value in the salary form

Once the initial pillage/looting phase ended, Spain established hacendados or encomiendas, surplus value was predomentantly extracted in kind by creaming off the peasantry in the same fashion of european medieval serfdom

The Spanish Empire was highly extractive and involved the settlement and rule of far off foreign and exotic lands. However, five centuries now separate us from that time. The groups involved have totally hybridised and it no longer makes sense to view Iberia as foreign to Mesoamerica. The correct approach is to balance the objective historical lens and the suffering of the natives with the romantic lens of ethnogenesis. Long term the latter will diverge into a mythology that can exist with a greater distinction from proper history. In summary, no Mexico was not a colony, because Quetzalcoatl himself ordered the Chixulub Virgins to smite the prideful Moctezuma with dahlia flower magics and subsequently to lie with the iron beard men and that the children of such union would thus rightfully reign over all of Tenochicotlopan.

>They were incredibly stupid with their money
Mostly right, since they hoarded so much gold and didn't regulate it so it caused insane deflation. Then they did stupid shit like giving the Soviets 500 tons of the shit in the 1930s for dogshit weapons in exchange.
>Napoleon rolled over them so fast and never thought of them again
Totally wrong here tbqhwyf, the Peninsular War was a constant pain in the ass for Napoleon and wasted a shitton of resources. Garrisoning men in Spain and dealing with the constant guerilla fighting was extremely taxing on the Napoleonic army and a huge part of the reason he was forced to try and take Russia as quickly as possible. If the Iberians hadn't given him such a hard time, he could have waited longer before attacking Russia and had a better course of action when they refused to fight.

Full cope, they can't justify in a reasonable way how much of a fiasco Spain was when administrating its own colonies, these so called hispanistas argue that all of the empire was united and that the British invented a big black legend to cause rebellion against "the motherland", but in reality the British had no need for that, Spain sealed it's future the very moment the first mestizo baby was born.

Truly pathetic, even cringe, the only thing uniting all was the cult built around the jewish carpenter but that has never stopped humans from killing each other.
