It's an American app in American English, it's not in British English

Duolingo puts the flag of whatever country they're basing the spelling/accent off of.

So they're using the American accent/spelling so they use the American flag.

>English is Illinois's official language. Illinois was one of the first states in the United States to pass an official language law, though its first official language was not English but 'American'. In 1923, Representative Washington J. McCormick of Montana had failed to pass a bill in the United States Congress declaring 'American' to be the official language of the United States. Following the bill's failure, Senator Frank Ryan introduced a similar bill to the Illinois General Assembly. The bill passed with the support of Irish and Jewish politicians in Chicago, who, by rejecting the term 'English', wanted to show their opposition to British policies in Ireland and Palestine, respectively

How common is English proficiency in Brazil anyway? I’m envious of anons that claimed that all the needed to do was play vidya to learn English. I doubt that would work with French or Portuguese. Plus there’s not as much media presence either

brazilians who speak any decent degree of english must be like 5% of the country
and from these brazilians the ones who speak fluently must be like 20%
and from these brazilians the ones who speak without an accent must be like 25%
so brazilian who speak english really well must be like 0.25% of the country
this is purely anecdotal and might be total and utter bullshit from my part btw
