afaik there will be no Berlin-Warsaw hi-speed line because the German govt is not interested in building their short section from Berlin to the border, even though Poland offered that it would build the rest, but without the German part the whole project doesn't make sense

well, at least we will have a hi-speed railway to Tallin and Prague

cool but actually it would be better for Estonia if all Estonians moved to Tallinn, in the current big-city dominated economy it just makes more sense to have one large city where human capital can be used more efficiently. And Estonia only has enough people for one big city.

Add to this that you don't have insane security checks, you can show up 5 minutes before the train leaves, and it takes you into city centres instead of some distant field you need to take a bus/taxi from.

This. I live in Umeå and a train ticket to Stockholm is €110-€150 depending on the time/date.
Never cheaper and that's a single trip. No return ticket...
Last April I bought a plane ticket from Umeå Airport to Stockholm for €21, return flight included. Took 55 minutes.
Trains are outdated unless they go like 500km/h and cost less than flying.

When I was in Japan I took fast trains everywhere. They literally cover all major cities. all across Japan plus all the stuff in between.
Umeå is the 13th largest city in Sweden and the largest city in Norrland. It might be distant in terms of distance but so is Hakodate to Kagoshima.
