I listen to a lot of stuff, but I notice whenever I talk to one of my friends, I'm like 100x more attentive whereas when I listen to a pure podcast or whatever, my attention often drifts off into nothingness and I don't even notice until a minute later or so that I haven't been listening.

I thought I could just learn all the hentaigana in unicode and be done with it. How naive of me the rabbit hole is so much deeper than I thought.

Not only does unicode not contain all possible 字母 but there since hentaigana is the cursive of a particular character there is an infinite amount of derivations not only in style but also the amount of cursive.

On top of this, when reading actual cursive writing you have to somehow be able to recognize all these but also be able to recognize which cursive character is used for its meaning (hentaigana) and which is an actual kanji. Because the hentaigana itself is cursive but the whole text is as well.

Finally you also gotta deal you connected character in renmentai, character of variable shapes that make them look like it's inside another character or even multiple hentaigana combined into one to form a 合字. Of course you will also need to know kyujitai and a bunch of itaiji as well.
