I really miss how this tactical AR-15 craze was such a thing a decade ago. The amount of butthurt and discussion this caused was amazing.

anyone who missed the period of 2009-2014 unironically missed peak AR and tactical training. We will never come close to the hype and product innovation anymore. Peak Magpul, peak anti Obama years, peak gun shows, getting 100 dollar Mosins by the crateful. Peak airsoft. Everything was simple.

the school of thought was since you have a lot of ammo and your primary goal should be suppression and removing the threat as fast as possible, so for recoil control thumb over bore means less recoil more rounds on target in CQB. This was the time period where GWOT/CQB tactics were focused on.

I dipped in 2017 after all the redditfags came here to shit it up. Seemed all the good dudes left. I popped back in at the beginning of the current /k/lank part 2, only to find the new board culture didn't want to talk about an actual current and interesting conflict. This isy first time back since. I'm hoping to find some of the oldfags to around.

absolute co-witness was in vogue, recoil control was all about bracing the fuck out of the rifle and pulling it against the shoulder pocket - and probably the biggest reason was that "nose to charging handle" was what most people learned through the military

It really was a golden age, and getting into guns in 2007 really skewed my perception of just how the gun market should be. For example, companies that historically sold and designed new hammer fired handguns were still innovating in that field, and after 2014 they collectively decided to build nothing but glocks.

I've been here since 2010, I persist out of spite and habit. But I barely post like I used to. There's just nothing really here anymore. Maybe if I didn't have my group of a dozen or so old /arg/ regulars that I interact with regularly in a Discord group I'd be here more, but even in that case it'd still be nothing like the old days. No community, no characters like GiRL, Saleman 2.0 or Zed, just a bunch of post-election tourists and foreigners screaming at one another over geopolitics. It's all shit now, and has been said, that's pretty much internet-wide.

Honestly that's probably the best bet, it worked out great for my group. We're all from here and meet at least once a year, more if events like Oshkosh EAA go down. It's a crapshoot though, I've been in more than one /k/ Discord that was a total fuckfest (you Colorado group queers need to seriously kill yourselves). >third worlders that really shouldn't have internet access.

this was the problem. I remember old /k/ being 99.9% americans talking about guns. literally every front page thread would be some autistic argument about which part or rifle configuration or caliber was best, the only thing breaking that pattern being the occasional joke thread about katanas or some shit like that.
Discussion about military vehicles or playing armchair general over current wars was non-existent. I remember getting in days long shitposting battles with half the tripfags mentioned in this thread over stupid shit like piston AR conversions, AR vs AK, 9mm vs 45 etc.

All of 4chan suffered the onslaught of third worlders and yurofags unfortunately, /k/ was just hit particularly hard now becoming a low rent version of /pol/ and /int/, foreign faggots battling over whose shithole is superior by way of thinly veiled arguments about fighter jets and tanks they don't actually know anything about.

I still can't believe how everything lined up perfectly for us to go from a box stock shotgun or handgun being a perfect home defense gun in 2010 (and for all of the 20th century) to the current idea of an AR plus optic, light, and sling being some bar to meet for home defense. It's a safe bet that it's industry shills really pushing that garbage, but there are plenty of people who didn't own a gun before 2020 who have bought into that church.

>and after 2014 they collectively decided to build nothing but glocks.
That change happened to everything at the same time. Look at a 2014 Dodge Avenger car compared to any car made now. Does anyone even make four door sedans anymore? I think the last qwerty phones died around that time too and everything became a touch screen iphone knockoff from then on. Blackberry isn't even a company anymore and they were once so dominant that even the US president used one for official communications.

Something happened to our society, and it has impacted more than just our gun designs. It's like someone has quietly banned innovation or something.

I can't explain the reason why, but I see how much changed. Guns all turned into the most generic glocks and ARs. Cars all turned into crossovers and trucks. Movies are the same safe formulas again and again. I don't know what to call it, but it's like everyone collectively accepted good enough as the standard and I don't know why. Everything is average enough to appeal to everyone but excite nobody, with utilitarian features in nonoffensive colors.

every company wants THEIR product to be the thing that works for everyone and appeals to the biggest audience
selling something that is an art form is controversial because the people you shouldn't even be marketing towards or care about dont like it
they want their product to be the only standard in the market

None of that discussion matters anyways because you burgers will never use your guns while the real military equipment gets used all the time. Keep talking about what Chinese optic you're going to use next, Tex.

of all the things to clown on tacticool AR setups for, home defense is the most retarded angle to take

>pistols
the AR will be easier to aim, be more accurate, have less overpen potential, and (generally) hold more ammunition
>shotgun
the AR will have less recoil, have quicker followup shots, have less overpen potential and hold more ammunition
>optic and light
seeing what you're shooting at and quickly and reliably hitting it are paramount for home defense scenarios for reasons that should be obvious

be contrarian and like what you want, but do not go fullretard like you did here.

as if that means anything to your faggot ass dick measuring contests over this or that tank or plane. none of you queers know the first thing about any of that shit, you have literally never even seen any of it in real life let alone have any meaningful knowledge or experience regarding million dollar equipment.
All of those threads are just third world retards talking out of their ass based on reading random spec sheets they found on google and garbage info dug up on video game forums. You might as well be arguing about the best practices for brain surgery for all you know about military vehicles.
All of it is just a pathetic veneer for political shitflinging over wars you also have zero knowledge or experience of other than what you can find on fucking twitter.

Idgaf about lowest-bidder military equipment debates. I can pay cash for a gun at a flea market and go home without so much as showing my ID, legally. No registration requirements or involvement of agents of the state whatsoever. There isn't a single eurofag or thirdie nation in which I can do the same thing legally, absent the benefits of nepotism. Enjoy your authoritycucked existence.

The point is that the idea of using a semi auto carbine for home defense wasn't even a common thing 15 years ago and there certainly wasn't some accepted standard of ideal accessories. It is a very recent and significant shift.

What happened is that a ton of people flooded into firearms ownership after 2012 and they all bought ARs because they thought ARs were going to get banned. That didn't happen, so all these people were left with a rifle(s) that they only bought due to politics and fear. Naturally, they all started throwing their ARs against the wall to see what sticks so they could justify their purchases, and finally the HD AR landed and stuck.

Turns out the AR is a good home defense gun, but the set of specific circumstances that happened for it to take over the market in such a short time is crazy. Then of course, this is all being driven by social media which happened to be exploding in popularity at that moment, and there was an abundance of GWOT vets ready to make tactical entertainment.

2012 was not even close to the biggest AR sales boom, the AWB expiring in 2004 was when shit really went crazy, typical /k/ posters are just too young to remember that time. There were a shitload of ARs floating around by 2012.

lmfao, the """big boys""" talking about military equipment they haven't so much as fucking smelled IRL. You are like a 12 year old kid that has a poster of a ferrari on his wall daydreaming about being a real real racecar driver.
Everything you think you know about whatever faggot tank you jerk off to is completely wrong because you are a random clueless jackass lacking even the most tangential connection to anything about it. Playing war thunder does not magically make you into an expert capable of intelligently discussing real hardware, FAGGOT.

Where did the 'Shotgun = Ideal home defense weapon' idea even come from? My family's home defense gun has been a centerfire semi auto rifle going back four generations. Great Grandpa had a Model 8, Grandpa upgraded to an M1 Carbine after the Watts Riots, Dad switched to an SKS after Rodney King, and I use an AR15. Is this an urban vs rural thing?

Anyone who took the late 2000's/early 2010's approach to gun ownership and blabbing about it to everyone in earshot got a rude awakening by 2019. Up until then, you could pretend (key word here) nothing had changed, but by that year, you were guaranteed to face some IRL consequences for crossing an invisible line that wasn't there before.

Okay? At home defense ranges the pattern on most shotgun loads will be the size of a fist.
If you were gonna miss with a rifle you'd miss with a shotgun too, the statistical likeness of being close enough to the edge of someone's silhouette that you'd miss with a single projectile and would hit with a buckshot shell is so unlikely it's not worth planning for.

To elaborate, I had a fun discussion with an old (as in, he was old enough to buy a gun in the year I was born, and I am +30) poster once. My question was a chicken and egg with Fudds - did they create the gun-culture, or did gun culture create fuds? My view was the fuds created it, like I said there. His view was more it was a creation of the culture of the time, that except for bleeding edge shit in the 80s you were more limited to revolvers/shotguns/bolt aciton/surplus/yadda yadda yadda. And he didn't say this but I realize it now that back then housing and basic essentials were cheaper but optional purchases (Including guns) were more expensive. Today it's a bit vice versa somewhat.

Still, while I liked his perspective I maintain a belief that they were shaped by mass media just as we were, so what made guns popular was depiction in movies and tv shows. And for the 30s-60s that's going to be wild west shotguns for home defense.

I know anons like >>63826788 or you will reminisce about the mid/late 2010s as a real notable shift, and you're not wrong, but honestly thinking back even over the last 4 years it feels like a pretty dramatic acceleration. Like, even silly old things like /k/aturday (though doggos and other pets were welcome too) were killed, something as similar as posting a gun and pet. Family photos, group threads, not even high effort cool projects and meets and so on but the final stragglers of the bear minimum
>"hey, enjoy your guns and life with other gun loving anons, enjoy shooting, maybe get a little better or discover something interesting or be inspired in some way"
It's all slipped away and nobody will even remember soon.

Oh don't get me wrong, the last few years have absolutely seen things go even further into the shitter. I'd even argue that 2022 was the biggest nosedive in quality since 2016. I genuinely think we have more foreigners (aka the insects who seriously need to fuck off back to /pol/ and /int/)posting here now than we ever have, and post quality has suffered as a result. They don't have guns, they generally don't know much of anything about weaponry or warfare and present everything through the lens of partisan shill talking points. They're not weapon nerds, they're actual or in-effect state actors, and they surged over here since Ukraine kicked off.
