Norinco still manufactures Type 56s for export. When Germany reunited in 1990, all of East Germany's stocks of MPi-Ks were almost immediately dumped on the open international arms market as part of a wider liquidation of the now-defunct NVA's assets and infrastructure.
Zastava still makes M70s for export and Serbia itself only very recently completed replacing it with the M21 and M19.

Not that the quality standards were ever high to begin with, regardless if they were made in the U.S.S.R. or under license somewhere else. Only AKs with some degree of quality manufacture are milled Czech ones.

Now to top it all off, the AK as a platform is atrocious to mount any sort of attachment, because they were conceived as cheap garbage to arm conscripts and insurgents in the millions. If you want to mount something on an AK your options are a side rail, mounting things on the gas block, or resorting to wobbly AK-12 furniture.

Which leaves you with an inaccurate gun that can't be spruced up easily and also jams just as much because the side of the receiver is wide open to the elements for grime to trickle in thanks to how the safety works. The myth that it is a rugged platform that never jams is a vile lie for retards.

That leaves you with its only real appeal. How cheap it is. That at least is true, it's cheap on every sense of the word.

I've been to Syria, and from experience with Kurdish, Arab and Assyrian militia, it's like a status symbol to them. Have to assume a lot of the AKs seen in the third world are from export countries, or from Warsaw Pact countries that were liquidating arsenals (and everything not nailed down) after the 1990's collapse of the USSR.

I would be surprised if Russian made AK varieties were all that common compared to Norincos, WASRs, Romanian, etc.
