Why are americans obsessed with this dumb rear charging handle slop? What is it in the american psyche that makes them love this ass backwards design that's so un ergonomic and retarded it makes bullpups look sensible.
I genuinely don't get it.

It's out of the way and you generally don't need to use it very often on an AR since ARs have a last round hold open and a bolt release. It's literally only used for clearing malfunctions and initially charging the rifle.

The actual true and correct answer is it was originally going to be under the carrying handle, it got moved to the next-least obtrusive place it could while keeping the body of the handle itself in the same position on the BCG.

We insist on it in new guns because grunts are retarded and we don't want to try and train them to do new stuff.

But at the same time you want the controls to be ambidextrous. It's a modern rifle, after all. How do you have a charging handle poking out both sides of the gun and not worrying about it getting caught on your webbing when you hold it against your body? Try showing us in MS paint.

It's not really ergonomic per se but it doesn't actually matter because you almost never use it aside from initially loading the weapon. Unless you run into a malfunction, every reload is going to be on an empty chamber with the bolt already locked back, so all you need to do is hit the bolt release. And the bolt release is for sure ergonomically superior to dealing with any charging handle.

Every place has its cons and pros.
Charging handle in the back is not best to use but.
Its seals receiver and when charged it moves out so any mud sticking to it moves out not in a gun like with AK handle.
Its out of the way it doesn't sticks into your back when you carry rifle on the sling and it doesn't drag your knuckles over bulky optics mounts ("SCAR knuckles").

The AR gets away with it because it holds the bolt open on the last round. You only ever need to use it once because you're releasing the bolt catch everytime you reload anyway. You'd know this if you had ever used one.

Charging handle - unobtrusive location, seals gas nicely, operation complies conveniently with bolt release, extremely reliable, hard to break. It just works.

Buffer tube - see attached image. Mass, Spring, and Damper systems are the best physics systems in the world for mechanical systems like a cycling gas system because they can be tuned very precisely. The buffer tube system allows you to do this very easily by changing buffer, weights, and spring.
No, you can't fold the stock.
It's a tradeoff, not a fault.

Forward assist - 100% top brass meddling that is made irrelevant by rack, tap, bang procedure. However it does do what it's supposed to do, isn't very obtrusive and adds negligible weight. Commercial options exist to remove it so it's a nonissue to us regular folk.

Now if you said something like carbon fouling shitting all over the innards of the receiver you would have a point. But your complaints indicate you don't shoot enough to have a reasonable argument.

since ARs lock open on an empty magazine, ideally you'd only need to use the charging handle once. Which means you'd ideally go for a charging handle that's more out of the way, and better seals the system.
Honestly the best thing you can do is put both the side and the rear one on a gun, and see which one grunts use more, then pick that one and remove the other one. Which is what they're doing with the M7.

The charging handle ergonomics are retarded and unfit for a rifle in 2025.

Valid point, yet, many designs have no need for it allowing the weapon to become more compact if necessary.

I was mostly memeing on the forward assist, it's a botch that has stuck all these years.

Rear charging handles enable brass deflectors to exist as oppose to the AR18 design and they are ambidextrous so you don't have to deal with charging handles on the other side.
Also you can lock back the bolt with the dust protector on so you can just hit the release to easily load the chamber.

Ends up messing with your sights. Especially with modern Picatinny rails. We could have gotten away with the AR-10 setup with the charging handle under the carry handle but that got changed for a number of reasons. Since the AR-15 is a DI rifle it tends to run hot and you generally want to keep your fingers away from that.

Mass replying to half the faggot retards itt. No one in their right mind likes the T handle. They're shit. If you run suppressed they shit gas in your face, an issue since the dawn of time that's never been addressed. If you need to work the charger they're always shit since it's so close to your face you can't do it from a shouldered position, not an issue with any AK or FAL side charger. One of the few things I prefer about the AK over your big standard AR is the side charging handle which is infinitely more convenient to operate during malfunction. I've actually had a round stuck in the chamber of my .300 AR and that piece of shit was so fucking hard to clear I had to mortar it against the ground and I never saw that round again in an enclosed space. I wish every day the default AR charger was on top or on side

I'm not a big guy (for you) and I've never had this issue. Sounds like you need to handle your rifle more, at least until it stops being awkward for you.
>I've actually had a round stuck in the chamber of my .300 AR and that piece of shit was so fucking hard to clear I had to mortar it against the ground
Sorry your rifle is unreliable, maybe you should do something about that. I'd recommend shooting only decent brass cased ammo. I used to shoot steel cased garbage because it was all I could afford, but you really need to just accept that you will have to deal with the occasional issue. I had a rifle that ran Tula and Wolf fine but would regularly get stuck cases with Brown Bear, so I just stopped buying Brown Bear.

Aside from the reasoning literally being that designers and military leadership think that American soldiers and consumers are too fucking retarded to use side charging handles in spite of their advantages, it makes sense for the receiver structure of the AR-15.
Also, while I personally think that left side/ambidextrous side charging handles are overall the best solution, it has the tradeoff of potentially taking away usable rail space.
