The explosion can be similar energy, but without a projectile traveling down the barrel being pushed by accumulated pressure, then it's pointless. Professional boxers can punch someone with 700-1000 foot-pounds of energy, but that's not going to penetrate better than a .22 LR with 120-140 foot-pounds of energy.

The flash powder in firecrackers is more explosive than black powder, so I'm not sure if it is safe. You could theoretically make a matchlock musket to ignite the powder but it might blow up in your hand.
