The explosion can be similar energy, but without a projectile traveling down the barrel being pushed by accumulated pressure, then it's pointless. Professional boxers can punch someone with 700-1000 foot-pounds of energy, but that's not going to penetrate better than a .22 LR with 120-140 foot-pounds of energy.

The flash powder in firecrackers is more explosive than black powder, so I'm not sure if it is safe. You could theoretically make a matchlock musket to ignite the powder but it might blow up in your hand. If you were going to test it, do it, do it the same way that Mexican tested a replica of the gun that killed Shinzo Abe.
