>I can't recall it exactly, but I recall it being a term for Russian households that have few or no male members
Not a real term, more of a meme/joke.
So called "бaбья ямa"(бaбa/baba in russian is a slightly rude term for a woman), so "baba pit" - a couple of generations of women (not uncommonly)living together who struggle with marriage/relationship; not as golddiggers or black widows or such, but just because of dumbfuckery, resentment and egoticism reinforcing itself in this multigenerational feedback loop. Signature phrase is something like "I gave birth to my kid only for myself", dunno if I translated it well enough, it's a proclamation of un-necessity of traditional family for feeling fulfilled as a mother. Sounds like radical feminism, but it's not "I don't need no man, I'm a strong-independant wahman", more like "oh, it seems like all real men went extinct, just can't find a right one".
You know that joke about boomer jokes - that they all boil down to "I hate my wife"; it was the case for old soviet jokes too, but much more prominent character in them is a mother in law, wife's mother - an insufferable asshole and control freak puppeteering the wife.
And a brief modern joke summarizing this phenomenon - "most people in russia were actually brought up in a same sex family - of mother and grandmother".
Such upbringing obviously isn't very healthy, and often dooms children to at least recreate similar patterns in their lives.
>older generations forcing the younger ones into prostitution through beatings and gaslighting because they are jealous about them being happier than they are, but I'm not sure.
That's bs. It's simplistic and straightforward mental construct of evil with good and bad guys.
Real problem much more often is what i described above - mother micromanaging/helicopter parenting a daughter well into adulthood "I won't let you repeat my mistakes!!!1" which produces surprisingly tightly knit co-dependent "family".
