The situation of the 1600's had it's seeds planted in the rule of Ivan the Terrible, where he slew his only competent heir when he spazzed out during an argument he had with him over Ivan causing his wife to have a miscarriage, leaving a weak-willed individual on the throne at a time where the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Swedish Empire were on the rise and invading Russian lands; whilst at the same time dealing with steppe bandits borne from the remnants of the Golden Horde pillaging their eastern lands.

Ivan the Terrible is also responsible for the creation of Russia's first secret police force, known as the Oprichniki, which would remain an oppressive force of the state against anything deemed undesirable by the ruling regime up to this current day in it's various other forms such as the NKVD, KGB and FSB.

He also instituted the Oprichnina regime which split the country in two, where on one side, he held absolute power and was beholden to no one and the other half would be governed by the Boyars. This was established in 1565 after Prince Andrey Kurbsky defected to the Lithuanians in the Livonian War and ended in 1572, when the country was once again reunified under a reformed Boyar council after the defeat of the Russians in the Russo-Crimean war where the Crimean Tatars burnt Moscow in 1571. The societal upheaval caused by the Oprichnina cemented the serfdom of the Russian peasantry and demolished the power of hereditary land-owning nobility as they and their peasants had their land seized and were banished to other parts of the country, causing societal instability that never really settled, even centuries later.
