a new kind of war
lets say the military starts developing practical emp bombs and weapons and they become widely used. how would this change warfare?

is it possible we'll see a return of totally electronics-less infantry war? horse mounted troops?

EMPs don't work like that
even if they are a problem there are engines and vehicles that can run without electronics
anti-drone meta will be semi auto shotguns with optics (ideally mounted on the helmet) designed specifically to target drones

that sounds kinda boring. makes me think of skeet shooting

couldn't major militaries just release swarms of thousands of drones at once? how will a shotgun stop that

An EMP works off induction. A sufficiently intense magnetic field, effecting a sufficiently long inductor, will produce a sufficiently big fucking current in said conductor. That will destroy any unprotected equipment.
Most EMP scenarios are something the size of a nuke, detonating at high altitude and interacting with something like the national grid (basically the world's largest antenna).
Fpv drones don't have enough copper in them to generate enough EMF to fry any critical electronics. At least not with anything remotely portable. Something like the big radar array on a battleship could do it. Possibly an aircraft if it got close enough.

Microwave guns. GPS spoofing. Signal jamming.
Shotguns ain't gonna cut it.

They could, but they wouldn't use that against 1 guy with a shotgun

It would be cheaper and better to just willy pete everything.

AS-EWCS XM-EMP12 “Stormcloud” Breakdown

Overview

The AS-EWCS (Auto-Shotgun Electromagnetic Weapon Countermeasure System) XM-EMP12, codenamed “Stormcloud,” is a specialized anti-drone weapon system designed to neutralize unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) through a combination of kinetic and electromagnetic effects. It integrates advanced targeting optics with a rapid-fire shotgun platform to deploy EMP-chaff rounds, disrupting drone electronics within a wide radius.

You'll see more DEW type things getting declassified for pointing at drones.
There's a fair amount of research from the past few decades around cooking traditional manned fighters that applies to drones almost 1:1.

man portable anti drone equipment is fatally flawed because it relies on a human being alert enough to spot the drone in time

Modern electronics are fairly insensitive to EMPs. At most it'd make handheld devices a bit bulkier with added shielding.

i doubt you have the education required to make such a statement

>EMPs
EMP's don't exist outside of Hollywood and nukes, anon. There is no 'BZZZTPEWWWWWWW' EMP weapon that wipes everything out in a 10km radius. There is, it's just it's a nuke, and why would you detonate it for its purely EMP effects when you could, you know, just let it explode?

Non-nuclear EMPs exist. They're called explosive flux compression generators, and come in various forms but all with the basic idea of using a high explosive to destroy a charged induction coil (thus releasing the coil's magnetic flux as an electromagnetic pulse). Also there are several directed microwave weapons that essentially mimic the effects of an EMP on a target.
Neither are useful weapons because electronics are easily shielded against EMP and modern devices are all hardened against ESD anyway (which protects against EMP too since it's basically the same effect).

His point was there is no giant sci-fi wipes out 10km of electronics 'EMP bomb'. There are incredibly minor things that are not really weapons and can't be made into weapons that are worthwhile. There is a reason why they don't exist. Because they're not viable. Microwave weapons are not EMPs so that's irrelevant. If it was possible to drop an EMP bomb and wipe out electronics in an area (without using a nuke) people would do it.

how did it take them so fucking long to realize this was the obvious solution
why are so many fucking ziggers and holohols dying to drones while desperately throwing sticks at them instead of blasting them with a few rounds of buck?

>le emp bomb maymay
You 'fry' the drones by adding too much energy to their circuits. This can be done in several ways, turreted lasers, millimeter wave energy from AESA radar, crowds with laser pointers (Egypt, 2018ish).
I think a solution is using one of Droneshield or their competitor's radar units and reprogram it to dump as much millimeter wave energy into oncoming drones. It's a simple software change to any modern radar.
Man, we are going to see some weird cancers this century.

EMPs exist. You can make one at home. They are effective. One can protect their equipment from one. The US military has already done this to jets and other vital equipment. You are late to the party.
For an example look at the tow behind that was designed for police to disable vehicles about two decades ago.
