collecting expensive shit that you won't even use since you'll inevitably find a few guns you'll enjoy shooting and only use those, seems pointless to me.

The one good thing about "collecting" guns is convincing no guns friends to go to the range with you and showing up with a dozen different things for them to try out.
And they never basically never lose value as long you don't let them rust. The base guns that is, any accessories/customizations will usually lose value, sometimes almost all of it.

Not just guns, but anything. It creates a future void in your life. Source? Me... Did it with games, plamos and (almost) old cars (skiped in time).

Got only 2 guns because live in a commie shithole. But if I was in a pro-gun country, would just buy 5-6 guns to enjoy it better and put my rights into use. Basically:

- Small revolver + small carbine for plinkster/ludic purposes.
- Good shotgun for HD.
- Good SA/DA for CC.
- Good AR/AK for end of times.
- Some other weapon I like much (maybe for some extra autistic points).

But not real collection... You become a slave.
Things should stay pratical to be healthy enjoyed.

Depends on the person.

We live in a material world and need tools and toys to live and be happy, but how much is too much?

Personally, I try to keep any collection of anything under a dozen items, and if I want something new, I need to get rid of something old.

Also, try to avoid impulse buys, if you want to buy something, try studying it for a month before actually getting it, to see if your interest wanes with time.

That doesn't imply that, stupid. Your entire existence is transient.

Happiness is not a state of being. If you try to chase "happiness" as some life state that you can achieve when you tick enough boxes you will not find it because it does not exist. No amount of material possessions, money, friends, family, power, etc. can make you happy in that way. All of it is temporary, because happiness is temporary. You will always adjust to your conditions.
The idea that you shouldn't buy guns because it's "hedonistic" or whatever is stupid. It's all hedonism. Buy that gun, enjoy it while it's enjoyable, then move on. You just won't be permanently happy once you have X number of guns in your collection. Friends, material goods, your health, they're no different.

When you redefine activities that are positive for mental health as hedonism, it's probably pretty easy to stalemate any argument about it. Don't get me wrong, I agree with the "while it's enjoyable" part. I think what you're missing from >>64104361 is that some enjoyable activities should be prioritized over others. His observation is that your own enjoyment of the world around you, regardless if that's hedonism, is stunted by a lack of sunshine, exercise, etc. Buying a new gun doesn't satisfy the same way or level as a good social interaction. That's what you're missing here: not all things weigh the same.

Hedonism is pleasure seeking. Maximization of happiness, minimization of pain.
Hedonism is not when someone does something that (you) don't like.

Did this come to you in a dream? Or is this another product of your schizophrenic delusions?

>Buying a new gun doesn't satisfy the same way or level as a good social interaction.

Shooting guns at a range is just OK. You get bored of putting holes into paper after a while. I like it well enough, but if I were restricted to just a bare bones utilitarian AR and a glawk, I would almost never do it.
For me it's collecting and using the firearms together that is fun. And maintaining them, upgrading them, dialing everything in to my preferences, etc. I love taking my own guns to the range but again, if I were forced to use loaners or basic cheapshit I wouldn't like it nearly as much.

Skeet is another story though.

I can get by the 'loaner' sentiment you got here. If it weren't for the fact that the few guns I do own are tailored to my tastes and preferences I wouldn't be nearly as excited about the hobby. Because of this, I just bought a few of them, fucked around with them til they were exactly what I wanted, and shoot the shit and piss out of them.

Cheap tchotchkes are the way to go for collectibles imo. You should really try shooting competitions other than skeet. Start with something simpler, such as steel challenge, then move on to more dynamic stuff, like IDPA, IPSC or 3gun, and find one you enjoy.

It depends on what. Some guns serve a practical function, some are just because I got a good deal, some because they are iconic in some way.

Really though I just spent a long time buying/selling/trading just to learn about guns firsthand. I have been impressed by cheap/low end guns and disappointed by expensive/rare ones. But sometimes you find something that is rare and really worth it too.

As a result I have a prolific collection of mostly neat or interesting guns that are junk and not really worth any serious money, punctuated by a few that are actually somewhat expensive and desirable. Anything that is worth serious money better blow me away, or else it isn't going to be worth keeping.

I used to have a variant of this problem. I had been shooting since I was a kid, but never shotguns. A lot of my associates looked at me like the local gun expert but I knew fuck all about shotguns, other than having blasted cans with one once, which teaches very little. I bought a shotgun and booked lessons at my local skeet range. No pressure because it's just 1-on-1. I told the instructor I was familiar with guns in general just not with shottys. Dude taught me the proper hold, how to lead targets, how the stock shape affects the gun's fit, etc and after 3 weekends I was busting 20/25 clays easy.

Can't really collect anything in this economy. I just buy a few different guns for different made up roles. Shoot them a couple times and then they collect dust. If I decide I "need" a new one, I sell the old one that fulfilled whatever role I made up. Really you just need a good dependable handgun and rifle. Probably shotgun now too since drones.

If it's of any help, ranges are just for test firing guns or for extreme noobs who will only shoot once. You go just to get the basic safety down and fire a gun for the first time. They're for noobs explicitly, anyone who goes to a range more than once is just an idiot. You have to go out to a safe place to shoot in an uninhabited area in order to actually be able to draw from the holster, do reload drills, failure drills, movement drills, etc. Ranges won't even let you draw from the holster which is day one shit that should be done before even firing a gun. You can never simulate real gun usage at those stupid noob ranges, complete gimmick.
