Watch this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oSUUuNKR7E
Everyone in the video is wearing around 40-60lbs of body armor+water+ammo+other shit and generally sprinting or running from position to position. On larger exercises, they would ruck anywhere from 3-12 miles to an ORP (objective rally point) before hitting the X.
Training for stuff like this consists of individual training events (ranges, combatives PT, etc), PT (3-5 mile runs, rucks, bodyweight circuits, weightlifting), and collective training (walking through battle drills in the woodline, team and squad live fires, classes on different tactical tasks, medical training, EPW training, NVG training, etc).
To be good at the above you should be able to 1) physically keep up with the weekly volume of physical training, 2) work with people younger than you who may have authority over you, and 3) work well in a team under moderate to severe stress. Generally unless you're already physically fucked up from something you should be able to manage 1) as the amount of weekly exercise involved isn't really that much for the average gymgoer or runner. Points 2 and 3 can be difficult for some older guys as they sometimes expect to be treated differently based on their age and then get mad when a 21 year old SGT yells at them or a 19 year old PVT wakes them up for a guard shift.
If you can keep a cool head, excel physically, and (most critically) you are not an asshole or a retard (which has nothing to do with your ASVAB or IQ) then you'll likely get noticed by your leadership and get promotion waivers early on in your career. On the flip side, if you are a fuckup, you will stay as a junior soldier for a while.

I don't know why us older people get so mad over this. There will be situations like in the military when younger people are the ones who have more experience and outrank. Did we all forget that experience speaks louder than age? Personally, it doesn't bother me at all. Not even intimidated.

You work typical work weeks but you'll get most federal holidays off, more often than not as part of a 4-day weekend, and sometimes your command will have additional training holidays as well. Of course you can end up working on weekends and holidays depending on your mission and you can also end up pulling duty on those days as well, but generally you have a little more time off than your average private sector worker.
Working hours will vary greatly depending on what your unit is up to. If you're doing something like a live fire or major exercise expect to work a lot. My first live fire ever I was out doing iterations from like 0500 to 0230 the next morning for about 3 nights running. Other times I would go several months just working 0900 to 1500 or so and then getting released to go to the gym. You will do morning PT as well, usually around 0600 to 0730 +/- 30 min, but some people don't count that as part of your working hours.

Is it true that if you're an older guy (30+), you could lack the proper "bone density" for good PT unless you've kept in shape through your youth, or is just bro science?
I'm not planning on trying for SF anything, but I've heard this and I'm curious if it's actually medically accurate. I'm 28 and planning on enlisting after I'm 30, but I've gone out of shape for almost 2 years, working an office job overseas.

Speaking for Air Force in 2019, you show up with your civilian glasses, then a few days in you get your eyes tested and they issue you mildly unstylish* prescription glasses. There was a dude in my flight who had some ultra-niche lenses or something, I never got the fully story, but anyway whoever made the glasses/lenses kept fucking it up for him so eventually they just let him wear his civilian glasses the whole time. I assume that's an oddity.
*When I say unstylish I mean solidly 5/10 generic glasses, I expected mush worse honestly.

I've been out since 2023. I want to go back and I want a fair shot at being an 0302. I got fucked for being injured in 2019 at IOC. I spoke with a PSR at an IRR muster a few months ago, he said I would get sent to IULC and not IOC? Is that true? I kind of want to go to IOC and I want redemption.
Billets shift all the time but I want to pick up a platoon commander billet with 2/23 in Las Vegas or maybe go to LAR as a platoon commander or XO. I'm a fairly junior captain minus my IRR time, I had a long stint as a 1stLt just because of my TBS class and commission date.

Not really. There are individual deployments where you augment another unit but they are never for just regular line combat arms. It's more like if a unit needs one or two people in a specific unique billet.
Right now the only infantry deployments are maybe to Syria, Iraq, or Africa. Emphasis on maybe. It's a handful of people per location outside of SOF and shit.

>While opium poppy cultivation in Afghanistan did not cease completely after the ban, the market was severely disrupted. By pressuring farmers to stop growing opium poppy and carrying out a targeted eradication campaign, the Taliban succeeded in drastically reducing cultivation. The change was particularly apparent in the south-western provinces, which had previously been the heart of opium farming. The drop in cultivation caused prices to soar.

Technically I'm guaranteed O-3 at 4 years and I've hardly done shit for service so far
Btw anchor post for anyone interested in getting med school, dental school, vet school paid for by the military. I'm army but can try to answer other branch questions.
Short story:
>get accepted to school of choice
>$2750/mo stipend, school is free
>signing bonus up to $20k depending on school type
>serve 45 days active duty/year, can do this at school some years just getting active duty pay to do whatever you normally do
>report to nobody most of the time, just focus on school
>serve a few years depending on your school of choice, in the case of medicine it can be a while if you pick a long residency like ortho or neurosurgery
>active duty time and residency count towards retirement years
Tl;dr
Results may vary, works for some.

But that was before I had ever heard of it, so all I knew about it was "Camp", i.e. Army (or maybe Marine), so I was like man this guy's strangely excited to get an Army base. Limited, you're 1) a small MOS so fewer slots across the Army and 2) looking at a small base with, again, fewer slots needed and 3) looking at a location that every intel nigga ever wants to go to.
Don't let me discourage you, if it comes up as a reenlistment option jump on it, but know the odds.
>>64158394
What would that even look like? Do you know what you're asking for?
"ARMA irl" = combat arms. Promotion opportunities are better since the career fields are bigger and have more cultural inertia than other parts of the Army. Flip side is you will be outside in the cold/the heat/bad weather/etc a lot as that is literally the entire point of the job. Whether you will "hate your life" really depends on you.
As someone who was 11b before and is now 35 series, I'll say that you really just have to not be a bitch to enjoy combat arms. You'll be tired and carry heavy stuff and get dirty and cold and whatever, but all that stuff is secondary to your mission of killing bad guys and breaking their shit or training to do so. If you're the kind of person who's gonna, like, take personal offense to the concept of getting dirty and wet or having to go without sleep or whatever, pick something else - you'll make a shitty Joe, become an NCO that values his own comfort above other things, and generally make things worse for everyone.
There are le coolguy programs for some career fields, to include combat arms and intel, but guess what, all of them include a very heavy dose of the same shit - heavy rucks for long distances, austere conditions, long hours, not being a bitch, etc., not to mention they're generally only open to experienced NCOs and above.

Dude it's 2025, there are almost no deployments anymore. This is the kind of attitude I expect from a trainee or fresh boot who doesn't understand how deployments even work or why you can't just go to combat whenever you want.
It's also telling that you believe civilians know anything about specific badges or respect service members based on them. Maybe 5% of them do, but the rest don't know an intel weenie from a Delta operator. It, again, makes you come off as a clueless boot projecting his ideas about service and deployments onto the wider population.

>>64161238
It again depends on your goals. If you want to make SGM one day, infantry is the career field with the highest chances of getting you there. It's still not easy or guaranteed but it's way easier than a tiny MOS with few billets at any grade above E-5 or something. That said it's definitely not required and I wouldn't tell someone they had to go infantry to make 20 or make SGM.
>>64161168
>>64161161
Don't like it? Don't join. The kind of person who sees having a CIB as the only marker of legitimacy in combat arms is the kind of person who will endlessly complain about having to do training, or get in trouble because he perceives himself as deserving that marker of legitimacy and gets angry when it doesn't materialize. It's like people who join on 18x contracts, fail SFAS, and spend their time at the 82nd doing nothing much, half the time they crash out and get in trouble because in their minds they deserved to be SF and doing regular infantryman stuff is beneath them. In both cases you come in with this fantasy version of your career already planned out and can't deal with reality.
Like I said before, an infantryman's lot in life is to spend large amounts of time training in poor weather, on little sleep, carrying heavy weights, with no guarantee that he will get to actually fight anyone. It's been that way since Roman times. Go in expecting Hollywood action and instant deployments and you'll bitch and moan your entire contract long. Go in caring about being ready in case you're needed and caring about making sure your organization can face future threats, and you'll barely care about something as insignificant as the weather or as beyond your control as whether you deploy or not.

Depends, in most branches it's a little different than being a non-rated officer with respect to expectations and the amount of responsibility you have. Fleet nuggets aren't expected to do much except study and get good at their job, with some bs make-work tasks like stocking the snack-bar or using CD-ROMs to install security updates on old computers. Strong swimmers will get assigned as the division officer for a maintenance or admin shop. There is a pretty well defined career path for pilots no matter what branch you choose, and you can generally predict your trajectory after the first tour. Going to the ANG was a welcome change, in a traditional status I don't do jack shit but show up a few times a month and fly. Being a pilot itself is awesome at first, then the novelty wears off and it's just a job. There are still awesome days I wouldn't trade.
>Do you recommend it?
Only if you can't find something better to do. For me, it was a way out of mediocrity. Becoming a military officer is probably one of the surest and most attainable ways to raise yourself out of the lower middle class.
For pilots, it's
>ANG
>USCG
>USN
>USAF/Reserves
>USMC*
>Power Gap
>Army NG
>Army
in that order. Avoid the USMC unless you are one of those guys who just has to be USMC, then it's number 1 and enjoy being a moto-retard.

Not military per se, but I've decided to look into getting my Merchant Mariner Credential and all the associated training to go work on a boat.
Since I keep hearing about US Sealift stuff in shipping related news I figured I'd see if this thread has any glowies who can give me a quick rundown on doing the merchant mariner thing on an oiler or other civilian-military ship- what certs are needed, how the pay is, etc.
Currently I was looking into working for one of the various tugboat companies in the greater Seattle area since it seems that tugs are going to be the easiest way for me to just get my feet wet and start accumulating sea hours, but is this something I should go visit, say, a Navy recruiter to chat about? Or is that just going to be annoying some Navy recruiter and wasting his time?
(Also, I wouldn't be able to join the navy regardless because I'm a certified old fuck in my mid 30s, so civilian sealift is the second best option.)

A navy recruiter will only give you information about joining the navy and will only give a shit about trying to get you to enlist in the navy. Look on usajobs for sealift command/merchant mariner jobs or do some research on which companies contract that kind of work to TRANSCOM and see if they have any postings in your area.

Conveniently forgetting Biden's inauguration where he mobilized an NG unit just to keep people away from the ceremony?

>For a 32 year old (fit) male with a degree (hons) that they never really utilized, would I be stupid to try to get in as an officer?
Shitposter, basically I've been average my whole life, drifting between shit job to shit job. Never really utilized my degree and it's been 5 years since I finished.
Just had my latest major setback and it's either a) go back to study, b) grind in a average job making slightly more than minimum wage for 2-3 years or c) join the ADF as an officer candidate and hope for the best.
I'm hoping that the better than average pay, subsidized living and benefits (ie defence home loan) will mitigate the period of service in which I lose, my life I guess. I am looking at it to get paid to study, and walk out 5-6 years later with a qualification. Should I consider other options?

hi. i am currently debating between army rotc or ocs. my endgoal is jag and i could graduate at the end of this academic year (3 years of college total), or extend my graduation by a year (dual degree likely), and continue rotc.
basically, what im wondering is if it is worth it to extend my graduation by a year or to graduate early and apply to ocs.
my end goal is to join the jag corps in any branch and if i do not extend my graduation i have my lsat already taken and would begin law school in the fall of next year, and apply 1L and 2L for OCS in every branch.
any advice would be great or any anons who know more about how competitive or selective JAG OCS boards are as compared to Education Delay for AROTC, or if its even worth it. thanks
