Not military per se, but I've decided to look into getting my Merchant Mariner Credential and all the associated training to go work on a boat.
Since I keep hearing about US Sealift stuff in shipping related news I figured I'd see if this thread has any glowies who can give me a quick rundown on doing the merchant mariner thing on an oiler or other civilian-military ship- what certs are needed, how the pay is, etc.
Currently I was looking into working for one of the various tugboat companies in the greater Seattle area since it seems that tugs are going to be the easiest way for me to just get my feet wet and start accumulating sea hours, but is this something I should go visit, say, a Navy recruiter to chat about? Or is that just going to be annoying some Navy recruiter and wasting his time?
(Also, I wouldn't be able to join the navy regardless because I'm a certified old fuck in my mid 30s, so civilian sealift is the second best option.)
