It's not as widespread as it seems, but there's long been a faction of the right that is prone to conspiracy theories and always found NATO to be highly dubious. This has a long tradition in the U.S. and goes back at least to the John Birch Society in the 1950s, but goes back further. You see that obviously today with Alex Jones. But it was an odd thing in the 50s, because they were anti-communist to the point of paranoia, and even saw Eisenhower as a secret communist, but they opposed NATO and would even get themselves into a belief that NATO itself was part of the communist conspiracy. It's pretty schizo. They didn't want anything to do with Europe, and in the 1930s/1940s they would've been isolationists, America Firsters, sympathetic to Hitler.
FDR was very lucky to have Japan attack Pearl Harbor. Because the Japanese are racial enemies.
These people really liked MacArthur and could imagine him as a Caesar-like president, while they really hated George Marshall. I also think part of it is resentment towards the northeastern political establishment, which is more Atlanticist. I'd almost call it a populist, right-wing "farmer" ideology. The "little men who don't matter." The John Birch Society was also named after a glowie who got murked by Chinese communists and they turned him into a martyr.
The Chinese are also racially alien. The Russians, not as much. For an American anyways. They don't really see the Russian as Mongols. Also the Russians are tough bastards who like to drink and fight a lot. We can respect that.
They've aligned with Trump, even though he's not one of them, because Trump and some of his people want to focus more on Asia to contain China. Obama was also doing this. Ukraine doesn't seem like it matters to American interests. I'm not justifying this position, I'm just explaining.
