i got the 4.2" 7shot for around $850. i think 4.2" is just right imo, but i cant back that up with anything besides feels since i've only ever shot this and an old blackhawk (of roughly similar barrel length) from a family member. i felt that the 3" would be tiny and look funny while 6" just seems excessive for a .357mag and i was worried it'd feel a bit awkward in the hand.
this specific model also has a fiber optic frontsight while a lot of the other models are just a regular black ramp and while you could swap out the front sight, it's just nicer to have it already on. i did try to get a distributor exclusive with full wood handles, im glad that i ultimately didnt/couldnt since the rubber grip feels nice and the wood inserts arent as tacky as i was worried about.

I was more leaning to the 6in version myself for better recoil management. Either the 1707 model or 1773 depending on if I want 6 or 7 rds. My LGS has them online for $842 and $876 respectively. The cheapest s&w 686 I could find $919 from aim which I also live local enough to so I could pick it up in store.
Anonymous No.64154284 >>64154306
>>64154209
not OP but I have a GP100 and a Model 629. The model 629's trigger feels a lot better to me than the GP100. It's not the same caliber obviously but I'd assume the trigger on the 686 feels similar. For the average person shooting average box loads, the difference in durability won't matter. I haven't had to RMA my 629 for anything but I admit I haven't shot it a whole lot (lol). I DID have to RMA my GP100 because the cylinder was binding randomly and it took about a month and a half to get back - idk what the return time for S&W has been like recently, maybe another anon can chime in.
Obviously these are just my personal experiences. See if you can try both at the range and find what you like better. Personally if I could go back, I would have saved a little more and gotten a 686 6" because the trigger is nicer (IMO) and I like the look better.
Anonymous No.64154306 >>64154323 >>64154365
>>64154274
i think the recoil is pretty low in just the 4.2" due to the weight, but a longer barrel would of course lessen it even more if you plan on shooting hotter loads. the other reason i chose the 1771 is i'm not a big fan of those finger ridges on the handle like the 1707 model.
>>64154284
what feels worse about the gp100's trigger compared to the 629? i dont have any experience in double action revolvers besides the gp100 and have only shot a single action before, but is it just smoother?

better and lighter break, smoother, and I'd say the double action is a bit shorter. probably stuff you could fix yourself on the GP100 with some new springs and a trigger job, but I'm too lazy to do that.

I will also second loving my GP100 MC and can confirm itโ€™s a great gun, 4.2 is the perfect barrel length for these and has a great balance and feel to it. Whatโ€™s nice about the big Ruger and Colt revolvers is the grip design, the grip stub allows you to throw whatever grip you want on the Rugers. With the Colts at least the Python and Anaconda have the same grip size, with S&W guns, each grip is limited to that letter frame N,K,J and so on.

The Anaconda is really nice but Iโ€™m still a bit annoyed at immediately having to buy new sights and grips for the gun when the GP MC was about perfect out of the box, and for half the money.

Itโ€™s because Rugers use a short braided coil spring in the grip stub compared to other revolvers, if you change out the spring to a better quality one, and add some shims to center the hammer, it gets much better, very clicky and mechanical feeling in that precise way you know?

Cool. How is it to actually shoot? The hottest ammo I've ever shot from a handgun was some Buffalo Bore +p .45 Colt. It had a ton of recoil but was nowhere near as unpleasant (I think due to the SAA style grip) as some lesser calibers I've shot in double action revolvers

I find that if I have a optic on a handgun, I use that handgun less, so I took all scopes and red dots off and Iโ€™m much happier with irons. I have a set of adjustable tritium Novak target sights in the same form factor as the originals on my GP100 MC, but I understand the normal GPs donโ€™t have a Novak dovetail do they? Either way, I really like these on this particular gun.

Is it side to side rattle or front to back? Both arenโ€™t great and can lead to the sight walking under recoil. I had to replace the rear sight with a Wilson Combat offering on my Anaconda because it did both and would walk to the right under recoil.

I only have mag fed handguns, but I've always wondered why don't more revolvers go bottom barrel like the Rhino? It seems like it would make the most sense recoil wise. Look at the lockwork of the Rhino compared to literally any other revolver, much more complicated and roundabout in design. You think thatโ€™s actually the hammer you cock on the Rhino? Wrong! The real hammer is deep in the guts. All of this invariably leads to a worse trigger, which kinda negates the benefits of the 6 o'clock firing position.

Go handle one. If you can't feel the difference in quality, or the price doesn't otherwise make sense for you, then don't buy one. All I can tell you is that I'm very happy with my L562, even though I'm an awful shot with it.

I'd say cringe. Moonclips are finicky and easily bent. Once bent they can bind and lock up a revolver. Cheap ammo is nice I guess

I believe the difference is that the blueing is a thin layer of oxidation that is resistance to rust, whereas the stainless steel is the entirety of the gun, not just a layer. Therefore, the stainless has better rust resistance.

Personal preference? Blueing is the sex

Incredible wheelgat anon. I've looked at either a Model 19 or a Model 27 4", not sure which one to get. The 19 looks like it'll fit my hands better, but I've heard concerns with shooting a steady diet of .357s. Is there any merit to it?

Donโ€™t shoot any of bubbaโ€™s pissing hot handloads or any bullet weights under ~147gr and youโ€™ll be fine. The new-production Model 19/66s can handle anything you can throw at them.
>t. Model 19-5 owner with thousands of .357 through it.

Based, particularly for single actions with drop in cylinders. I have a Uberti 1875 with 9mm and .357 cylinders so I can have a rootin' tootin' range day for dirt cheap, or shoot buffalo bore bear dilators with the same gun.

I still haven't put any .357 down my 19-4. My paranoia is overwhelming.

I'd say the modern lockless Model 19. Perfect dimensions and its probably 10x more unbreakable than any of the previous generations.

Poor can mean different things, in this case I mean it as in 'unfortunate'

If I didn't have to wrestle with bureaucracy every time I wanted to buy a gun I'd have much more

Its a nice grip, makes single action a bit more queer to use but overall alot nicer then the stock wood one it came with.
