I looked this up a while back but basically hunter culture is declining. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service shows that hunter numbers fell from 11.5 million in 2016 to approximately 10.3 million in 2022, a 10% decline, and over the past five decades, participation has plummeted by nearly 50%.

In order to bring hunting back, states are going to have to eliminate restrictions. Caliber restrictions are gay, capacity restrictions are gay (especially when dealing with invasive pests), and game wardens treating you like a terrorist if you defend yourself against an aggressive animal is gay.

I was part of a program that arranged for tax incentives for landowners in my state to allow for seasonal hunting access on their land, especially cropland that never gets used during peak hunting season for anything productive anyways. The amount of people I encountered who would demand that any hunter pay tens of thousands of dollars to take a whitetail or mule deer buck on their land (despite never hunting themselves) was very astonishing. Hunting used to be affordable, a cheap way to put meat on the table. It's a ridiculous expense now for even basic kit, plus the absurd amount of time involved between permits & related activities and driving to a place where you can hunt. Shooting a moving target that is about to come maul you is both difficult and panic inducing. You are very likely to miss, and in the time it takes to rack the bolt action, it’s closed the distance. With a semi auto with high capacity, not only can you make quick follow on shots, but you have the capacity to do so until the boar is dead. There is virtually no public land in Texas compared to other US states. Most of the big tracts are run by either corporate ranchers or Dallas guys who leased it to Houston guys to put up frac spreads of a lot of very complicated, extremely explosive components under tremendous pressure. Neither group really is keen on letting a random retard spray around for hogs as "some things in here don't react well to bullets".

If you want to hunt hogs you basically have to know a guy with a smallish piece of like 200 acres running little to no stock and with no rigs or pumpjacks. So basically a hobby farm. Not impossible but not as easy as it appears

While one shack I saw built near the river could've been kids/teenagers fucking around, I know of at least one or two areas that have had actual homeless plywood barely-standing shacks built, or were there at one time. It's uncommon, but tends to be in areas that they think no one will go or look. This often means near a store (food/supply source) but doesn't mean it needs to be within a short walking distance. I also know I've run into trash covered areas someone definitely stayed, but can't think of any in specific off the top of my head ATM. I also remember running across a homeless guy who somehow managed to make a camp on an island in a local river for a couple days. Friendly AFAIK. Not sure how the fuck he got in or out of there. Did find a cheap Walmart machete washed up on shore (or on the island shore?) a couple days later, though. Never saw him again. Oh also found syringes in a pouch innawoods too. And this is east US, not on the coast, relatively rural.

Also hunting is dying out due to population density and lack of close public land in most places.
In the 1950-1970s most current cities and towns didn't run together in urban spawl and between the existed creeks and woodlands. Kids went into the woods with .22s and and swam at the watering hole. Adults might bag a deer in season.
It was beautiful and most residents of the nation had local woods.

Now urban sprawl has developed all that space and the only way you can tell one town ends and another begins is a sign tells you mid street.
Most people must travel far to hunt, and nearby remaining wilderness is just trails for hiking, pretend wilderness so someone can go jogging in what amounts to a park.
Some places even dart the deer with contraceptives to control the numbers rather than allow more hunting.

In the 80s and before there was truly poor rural areas where cost of living was so low some hermits worked once in awhile and lived the majority of the time in a remote shack. Or large families of many adults had a single bread winner.
Half of Apalachia was like that.
And the further back you go the more places were like that.
Most workers not in factories in the 1800s were seasonal ranch hands (cowboys) or miners and if unmarried worked a few months then blew it on liqor and whores or gambling, then lounged around the rest of the year on the little that was left until finaly having to work a little while again.
The endless daily grind didn't use to be universal and was limited to the handful of big cities.
So probably half the population used to be 'homeless', even when homes were cheap, because many men just roamed free.
