Noguns, never shot a gun before, but how were the Somalians so fucking bad at aiming? Is it really THAT hard to hit a human size target?

look at war footage from the middle east. They literally don't aim beyond "have my target roughly within a 45 degree cone ahead of me". Many say that Allah will guide their bullets. I wish I was kidding.

From what I've read about this style of African clan militia warfare, it's basically like Chicago teenagers armed with Dracos or Brazilian favela kids on larger scale and with RPGs. The idea is to just start blasting in the general direction of the enemy, and make a lot of noise because big shooty = go faster = more deadly and then push. So battles between clans end up look like big shoving matches that go back and forth across a city until the place is destroyed. It's actually rare for whole groups to get wiped out (that is in clashes between equal-ish opponents) because the point is to push the other side back. Don't take this as gospel but it sounds right?

1. A lot of the Somali combatants weren't actually full-time militiamen, but angry locals who just joined in because they were pissed at Americans. If you watch the extended edition of the movie, there's actually a scene where a member of Chalk 4 mistakenly kills a Somali shopkeeper who was shooting at looters stealing a TV. In the book, Rangers trapped around Super 61's crash site reported that enemy fire slackened off but became dramatically more accurate later in the night as the locals went home for the night but the militiamen stayed on duty and continued fighting.

2. A lot of the Somali combatants were firing on full-auto, firing from cover without aiming (i.e. sticking your gun around a wall and just spraying away), or both.

3. If you include wounded, nearly every member of Task Force Ranger who took part in the raid wound up becoming a casualty. Something like 70% of the participants were either killed or wounded badly enough to warrant hospitalization. Similarly, nearly all of the Black Hawk helicopters that flew in the raid sustained some degree of damage. In the addition to the two shootdown, another three either crash-landed in friendly territory or were so badly damaged that they had to be written off and scrapped.

4. A significant portion, if not a majority, of Somali casualties were the result of strafing runs from AH-6 and later AH-1 gunships that started attacking any crowd that appeared to be approaching American troops.

To really sum it up, the basic human reaction when somebody is trying to KILL you is to FREAK THE FUCK OUT. Re-wiring the muscle memory so that you default to doing something useful when the freak the fuck out hits takes time and money that shithole militias will never have. Combine that with the lack of a good C3 network, and you end up with all fire, no maneuver in some high-tech version of monkeys throwing rocks until one side gets sick of it and goes home.

Naturally, when one of these groups runs into somebody who does do that legwork to keep their shit together under fire, it tends to go exactly one way.

A lot of Aidid's fighters were former members of the Somali National Army who had defected as Siad Barre's regime began to disintegrate in 1990. That's a guy who appears to be his in his late-20s or early 30s, so he could have been a participant in the Ogaden War as a teenager or the Isaaq genocide of 1987-1990 and knew his way around a gun.

As much as "niggerslol" endures, the Floppies were getting support and training from the Soviets, and with all the wonders of the Russian language we've learned the last few years, it really wouldn't surprise me if a bad translation went from "push up when shooting further" to "push up to shoot further", and then it spread around the scuttlebutt network from there.

It's a movie employing the well worn action movie trope of the good guys shooting well and the bad guys unable to hit the broad side of a barn. The reality is that practical accuracy from infantrymen in combat is almost universally quite poor. As anon points out, it's not riflemen doing the heavy lifting when it comes to inflicting casualties.
