In the book, Rangers trapped around Super 61's crash site reported that enemy fire slackened off but became dramatically more accurate later in the night as the locals went home for the night but the militiamen stayed on duty and continued fighting.

Except Hood was actually a good division commander until he was wounded at Gettysburg and Chickamunga, after which point he was promoted beyond his abilities while also suffering serious physical decline. It was actually more than that. The Death Star had been designed to repel attacks by enemy starships, the starfighters the Rebels used were so small and fast that turbolaser batteries had trouble tracking them.

They say in the movie that the Death Star had only one weakness but keep in mind that Rebel intelligence only had a day or two at most to look over the blueprints and were still only going off a limited understanding of it (things like design changes and substituted materials not being accounted for). There were almost certainly a lot more weaknesses than that two meter thermal exhaust port, it was just the first and most easily exploitable one they found.
