1. A lot of the Somali combatants weren't actually full-time militiamen, but angry locals who just joined in because they were pissed at Americans. If you watch the extended edition of the movie, there's actually a scene where a member of Chalk 4 mistakenly kills a Somali shopkeeper who was shooting at looters stealing a TV. In the book, Rangers trapped around Super 61's crash site reported that enemy fire slackened off but became dramatically more accurate later in the night as the locals went home for the night but the militiamen stayed on duty and continued fighting.

2. A lot of the Somali combatants were firing on full-auto, firing from cover without aiming (i.e. sticking your gun around a wall and just spraying away), or both.

3. If you include wounded, nearly every member of Task Force Ranger who took part in the raid wound up becoming a casualty. Something like 70% of the participants were either killed or wounded badly enough to warrant hospitalization. Similarly, nearly all of the Black Hawk helicopters that flew in the raid sustained some degree of damage. In the addition to the two shootdown, another three either crash-landed in friendly territory or were so badly damaged that they had to be written off and scrapped.

4. A significant portion, if not a majority, of Somali casualties were the result of strafing runs from AH-6 and later AH-1 gunships that started attacking any crowd that appeared to be approaching American troops.

So far as I can tell, every single F-14 lost during the Iran-Israel War was destroyed on the ground. Not a single sortie flown by them. The destroyed aircraft in question may not have even been functional, just ones being cannibalized for spare parts.

Except Hood was actually a good division commander until he was wounded at Gettysburg and Chickamunga, after which point he was promoted beyond his abilities while also suffering serious physical decline. Bragg was similarly a decent organizer and strategist who was brought down by his personal flaws.

The last Russian generals who seemed to have had even a modicum of the potential of Hood and Bragg were Soviet-inherited ones like Rokhlin who were purged (usually lethally) by the turn of the century.

I'm pretty sure the Norwegian Nobel Committee would reject Trump out of hand for this year's Peace Prize purely for his role in starting the Iran-Israel War, and that's nothing to say of throwing Ukraine under the bus does nothing to advance the cause of peace. No more than Neville Chamberlain did at Munich, who was, not-so-coincidentally, also rejected for the 1938 Peace Prize, while Hitler at least received the nomination (as a joke).

It was actually more than that. The Death Star had been designed to repel attacks by enemy starships, the starfighters the Rebels used were so small and fast that turbolaser batteries had trouble tracking them.

They say in the movie that the Death Star had only one weakness but keep in mind that Rebel intelligence only had a day or two at most to look over the blueprints and were still only going off a limited understanding of it (things like design changes and substituted materials not being accounted for). There were almost certainly a lot more weaknesses than that two meter thermal exhaust port, it was just the first and most easily exploitable one they found.

Also worth pointing out that Yugoslavia was essentially in a state of racial civil war by 1942 (I mean, when it is not, but this time around it was REALLY FUCKING BAD) and the Allies would invariably have to take sides in it.

It would have fundamentally altered the nature of the war if the Western Allies had found places like Jasenovac and started to truly grasp the depravity of the ideologies they were at war with in 1943 instead of 1945 (I mean yes, they had been getting reports of the massacres and the camps as early as 1940, but even the most ardent anti-Nazis were only taking those accounts half-seriously at the time).

Both, Japan’s last hope to come out of the war saving at least some face was for negotiations mediated by the Soviet Union. The moment the Soviets abrogated the Neutrality Pact, any hopes for that were dashed. At the same time, the atomic bombings provided an incredibly convenient out for Japanese leadership to capitulate while saving some degree of face at the same time. Japan would surrender as a consequence of a revolutionary new superweapon from which they had no defense rather than overwhelming conventional inferiority, blockade, or conquest.

The ship was literally designed to accommodate as many as 64 lifeboats. The number actually to be fitted on the ship was reduced to 32 during construction and then to 16 (the legally required absolute minimum for a ship of Titanic's weight classification) to increase space on the First-Class promenade, then bumped up again to 20 with the addition of four collapsible boats. So Titanic was actually carrying more boats than was legally required to at the time.

>>17834568

They weren't even able to actually launch all 20 boats that they had, Collapsibles A and B were were both swamped and floated free of the ship as it began its final plunge. If anything, additional lifeboats might have actually increased the number of fatalities as each launch would have taken substantially longer.

>Ultimately probably every soul would have been rescued if the SS Californian had responded.

Nah, SS Californian

1. Was too small to accommodate everyone, having less than half of the displacement of the Carpathia (which had struggled to accommodate all 700 survivors) and 1/10th of the Titanic's.

2. Had already powered down its boilers at the time of the collision with the iceberg (hint: steam engines are not like diesel-electric ones which you can cold start in an instant).

3. Would have been hindered in its efforts by Titanic accidentally misreporting its own position (this actually caused an hour-long delay in Carpathia reaching the scene, not that it mattered).

In short, even if Cyril Evans had been on the wireless another hour and heard the first distress call, and Stanley Lord had immediately sprung into action the same way Rostron did and restarted the boilers and engines, and managed to not get thrown off by Titanic's misreporting its position, it's still doubtful whether the Californian could have actually reached the ship before she sunk. At best, they might have reached Titanic just in time to watch the ship split in two and go under.
