What made Grand Moff Tarkin believe it was a good idea to let the plans to his new superweapon escape? Not only that but travel to the rebel base where they were being studied? I understand wanting to destroy the rebel base before they can manoeuvre but surely a couple of imperial destroyers to defend the death star should have been employed?

Tarkin wasn't in command of the Star destroyers he was in command of the death star. And the imperial government seems very competitive so he would have been asking a rival for help.

I like how the Imperial analysts only noticed the potential weakness in the core vent when a squadron of X-wings were heading straight for it. Apparently no one, at any stage in the development and construction of the Death Star, had given that a moment's thought before.

Going by the films, Vader is the only one who kills subordinates for failure. We don't see Palpy do that, so maybe a rebel escape wouldn't have been the end of Tarkin.

They were like a second away from blowing up Yavin 4 and hitting the vent was basically an impossible shot anyway, the rebels got really fucking lucky because of the force.

It was tactically a pretty clever big dick move to let the rebels have the plans only to immediately track them down and blow them up. The rebels realistically shouldn't have been able to react effectively in time

It literally was a good idea though. The Empire won 99.9999% of the time. The only chance of failure is if Darth Vader's secret son somehow against all odds signed up with the rebels at just the right time and he had been trained by Darth Vader's old mentor in the ways of the force so he could pull off an impossible torpedo shot that literally no one else in the rebellion could pull off, if he happened to have Darth Vader's old astromech guiding him, and if somehow a shitty old freighter could sneak back into the Death Star's defense perimeter to shoot Darth Vader's tie fighter throwing him off into space and not killing Luke. That's completely ridiculous to even consider happening though. Tarkin was right to be completely confident they'd win and destroy the rebels shortly.

It was the emperors idea. The force told him that by doing so, he would find the rebel base, which they did. The force didn't show him the son of Anakin would appear out of nowhere and destroy the space station though...

The plot hole that I never saw anyone else criticize was that Leia called it that the Empire had put a tracker on the ship and then let them escape on purpose. So let her make a phone call and switch ships in space missouri after they bring enough to pay Han

It was actually more than that. The Death Star had been designed to repel attacks by enemy starships, the starfighters the Rebels used were so small and fast that turbolaser batteries had trouble tracking them.

They say in the movie that the Death Star had only one weakness but keep in mind that Rebel intelligence only had a day or two at most to look over the blueprints and were still only going off a limited understanding of it (things like design changes and substituted materials not being accounted for). There were almost certainly a lot more weaknesses than that two meter thermal exhaust port, it was just the first and most easily exploitable one they found.

Every single one of the rebel fighters was destroyed except wedge and the Jedi. They would never have won on their own in any circumstance. It wasn't a real weakness. The death star also held back on launching more fighters, just because of plot armor, which would have destroyed the Falcon preventing it from swooping in the save Luke. That would have stopped Luke from making the shot. Again, it's just a children's movie with thick plot armor for the heroes.

I have never watched anything other than the original 6 movies, mandalorian and force awakens. Should i give anything else a go? Rogue One seems to get the most praise but I just think its a stupid idea and doesnt look like it fits in with A New Hope at all aesthetically.

It feels wrong in the context of the originals. Why don't Ben and Yoda try to do something with the 200-300 jedi who are already partly or fully trained instead of investing all their hopes in Luke, a young man at an age the order would have considered too old for initiation?

That seems like a good reason NOT to involve him, given the family proclivity for the dark side. Luke is the last force talent you'd want to involve when you have a pool of 200-300 to choose from.

The majority of Americans understood from the Revolutionary War or interactions elsewhere like the Indians on the frontier,r Philippines and recent Japanese interactions that the Vietnamese wouldn't be cowed unless the war went to Roman levels of conduct which the population refused to engage in.
