I finally built my first AR and took it out to the range yesterday but had some malfunctions.
It's a 14.5 mid length, and I was firing 55gr PMC Xtac out of brand new gen2 Pmags.
Every 3-6 rounds, I had failures to chamber, where the tip of the round would be tilted up into the chamber, but the rear would still be in the magazine. Subsequently, the bolt coming forward would dent the shoulder of the cartridge. In addition, the bolt did not hold open after firing the last round in a magazine.
I'm wondering where to begin with diagnosing this issue. Of course it would be nice if it's something as simple as the feed lips on the new mags needing to get broken in a but, but I also wondered if it might have something to do with the buffer/buffer spring. Any insight? Thank you.

This is usually a silly question in year of our lord 2025, but ensure you have M4 feed ramps.

Make sure your barrel extension is properly clocked.

Make sure your mags aren't the issue.

Play with buffer weight.

i HAVE to have a fixed magazine to be legal for my states laws (featureless is also a option but i do not believe in featureless builds)
the CompMag is THE BEST OPTION for a fixed magazine that there is because of how easy it is to load and other reasons such as how easy it is to fix in place aswell as how easy it would be to remove if i ever move or if the laws change or the apocolypse or something

the only other option would be to fix a normal magazine and use a Mean Arms MA Loader speedloader to quickly load the magazine but i am not a big fan of that because i feel like it will probably put alot of wear on the upper and on the magazine feed lips and other parts as it is forcing 10 entire cartridges through the ejection port into the magazine all at once when obviously the ejection port is not designed for that it is supposed to EJECT spent casings not take in entire cartridges
also that would run into other issues besides just putting wear on the feed lips and etc overtime i would have to pin a normal 10 round magazine or if i pinned a larger magazine (10/30 or 10/20) there could be reliability issues because of the limiter block and spring sizes and other stuff
also the big problem with that aswell is that permanently fixing the magazine means i would have to use a special magazine catch and mag release button to permanently fix it in place and maybe even have them real welded or JB welded in place to be PERMANENTLY AFIXED which would be much more difficult or even impossible to reverse if the laws changed or i moved or SHTF
the CompMag locks itself in place with special rollers and has a "key" thing that goes into a slot to release the rollers and let the magazine to be removed and to be permanently fixed for my state they designed it to have JB weld be put over the release slot and a little panel that goes over the JB weld and permanently locks it in place

the little panel has a little spot marked on it where if you ever wanted to remove it you can drill into it and remove the JB weld and panel easily

i also have NEVER had a feeding or other issue with the CompMag at all it is very reliable
the Mean Arms MA Loader speedloader would be much faster to use yes (it actually is faster to use then changing magazines normally) but i do not trust it to be as reliable and i also worry about it causing damage to the upper and fixed magazine over time and it would be much harder to remove a traditional PERMANENTLY fixed magazine then it is to remove the PERMANENTLY fixed CompMag

I actually do think it's possible and lapping the receiver would be part of a much longer, more time consuming accurizing process. Something akin to pistolsmithing a 92FS but like 3x longer. As a class we could come with all the parts and surfaces you would have to true up!

I do not think that is a very good choice at all unless you have an autistic fixation on that rifle for some reason. Colt is fine, a solid rifle all round, you are just slightly overpaying for something that is a little feature awkward imo. You wont be wrong with a Colt though. S&W also to my knowledge makes decent enough rifles, itll shoot for sure
