What forces and equipment could Poland and Lithuania bring to bear on Kaliningrad? What forces and equipment does Russia still have available to defend it?

Brilliant, it will only take 5-6 years and four million casualties at the current rate of russian advances in Ukraine to open a narrow corridor that bypasses the Sulwaki gap and has no rail lines through it. Unless you mean opening another front elsewhere, which does what to reinforce the city?

the nature of NATO is a defensive alliance.
In realpolitik terms if Poland and Lithuania invade Kaliningrad the existence and purpose of NATO is totally unchallenged if Russia manages to destroy Lithuania and fend off Poland, if they're capable of doing so.

I also enjoy making fun of ziggerstan's pathetic rusty nuclear arsenal, but speaking seriously, even if only 1-in-5 of their nukes work, that's still a lot of nukes. Not that they'd ever actually use them, they're much more useful to them as a threat against timid leadership, which is all they need them for.

If 1 nuke in their entire arsenal functions and blows up Paris or New York that's a higher cost than the entirety of the western world has seen fit to value the Ukraine war at so far.

The problem is the result of that one nuke is the complete destruction of russia. And I mean literal, total, and final destruction. Russian language and culture will cease to exist outside a few pockets of diaspora, russia itself will become a footnote in history, and whatever bits of the country that are left will be colonized for resource extraction by others. What's more is the surviving oligarchs loose all their power, prestige, luxuries, everything they have. Russia attempting to use nukes is not just a winnerless game, it's active suicide at this point. There's a very high likelihood that while some of those warheads will work the russians themselves don't know which ones they are or if they're attached to a delivery method that works. The "even one" argument is correct in the sense that yeah, one 5MT warhead on a major city will be destructive but if 10% of the warheads work, 10% of the delivery systems work, you don't know which ones, and you know the enemy has an intercept capability above 1% you have to send everything you have against just a few targets and hope for the best as you wait to die. Russia can ook all it wants, unless there was a hostile military actively kicking in the door of the monke bunker it will never try and use its nukes.

Is there any reason to think that russians have operational nukes?

Considering the state of the place, the population, the rampant corruption, the armed forces in general and the quality of most stuff made in russia is questionable at best. Then it's fair to doubt that russians have no operational nukes.

Does anyone believe that despite all the shortcomings of the russian people, somehow as if by magic their nukes are immune?

Oh Russia would be unequivocably annihilated I would never argue about that for a microsecond.

The passage of a few more years is the end of Vladmir Putin, born 1952, compete and total nonexistence for his person. But he likely cares about his legacy and Russia's long-term survival and this could manifest in the thought that if Russia isn't a great power than burn it all down. You can get some of his history focused megalomania through his public interviews.
Putin almost certainly depends on the support of the Russian oligarchs for long term survival of his regime but obviously the command authority of immediate nuclear weapons deployment contains 0 random civilian oligarchs.
When I said "just 1" I was thinking of the after-tax version where just one gets through allowing for all failures and the very limited intercepts we have. Our nuclear missile interception is extremely limited especially with the problem of MIRVS.
In the cold war of annihilation between two great powers, one or two or five getting through is very acceptable casualties. The question is, would we eat even 1 for Latvia?

I'm hawkish as hell and insanely irritated that the Biden administration actually believed Russia would launch nooks over Ukraine and held back. but I'm also irritated by the meme that Russia has 0 nuclear capability. I call it a meme instead of a conspiracy theory, the word theory would dignify the ziggerziggerzigger posters trying to fight the war on their keyboard.

I have to give Russia credit where credit is due, the fact they've STILL been able to convince people (50% of the US and it's politicians and president) that it is somehow STILL a great power after being stuck in Ukraine for 3.5+ years now is kinda incredible and even convincing some people that it is actually somehow Ukraine's fault for getting invaded and they will fall any time soon. I kinda agree but also disagree. See how they manipulated both sides of the political spectrum of Germany to the point where the only thing Germany could provide was helmets to Ukraine while sucking off Russian gas deliveries. Russia made it impossible in almost all countries to be pro-active and do something about their invasion. Europe and the US (under Biden) were always re-active and were so afraid of escalating the war (which ofc is what Russian propagandists were aiming for) when in reality it didn't mean shit.

NATO/Europe/US could have ended this war by going full in with Leopard 2s, ATACMs, F-16's, Shadowstrikes, Patriots etc etc. with no restrictions to Ukraine in April 2022 instead of doing it piecemeal and giving the Russians the chance to fortify and exploit the restrictions.

so the popularity of FPV drones among kids means that no one is tasked with developing ACTUAL military drones? good thinking

There is zero conventional ability to resist Western stealth fighter-bomber SEAD, which any progressive tactical yield nuke deployment would precipitate and induce total logistical paralysis within hours with actual precision conventional deep strikes— whereupon the only deterrent is strategic nuclear exchange or surrender. Russian nihilism isn't an asset, it's a liability.

If a Russian nuke "blew up" Paris or London it would wipe out the millions of browns that have been allowed to invade those cities, that's practically a gift. The actual British and French fled those cities years ago. The population centers are nothing but ceremonial targets, and europe would be better without them.

Soviet nuke doctrine doesn't work without the prison house of nations to send as slave conscripts, with vanguard echelons trained to exploit tactical nuke spam to bum rush all the way to Gibralter— anything less than a strategic exchange by these mongoloids will only result in actual 21st century tech dismantling their ability to do Ukraine levels of WW1 trench bullshit. Dragging this out is only effective as economic warfare against perfidioud Eurotrash, whom were cut loose by the USA switching to SOFR from LIBOR after Powell's Federal Reserve appointment pre-Coofvid.

Hello. I am from Ukraine.
Please explain why NATO would fight for the Baltic countries?
What if they don't?
Well, ziggers just simply invade through Belarus.
All NATO countries, led by the US, express deep concern, but do nothing.
You're all afraid of nuclear strikes. Because of this, you even shut down Starlink during the offensive on Crimea.
Why would anyone fight against ziggers?
Poland has already been attacked by drones, and there has been no response.

>Is there any reason to think that russians have operational nukes?

Because the USSR was a controlled demolition— it didn't 'collapse', they got ahead of it and privatized it, like Lenin made concessions to market reforms in The New Economic Policy Period. They doubtlessly have some at least (and presumably use Norks as third party nuclear test range).

It is often overlooked just how important schooling is. Since Russians aren't a historic minority in Latvia and their parents and grandparents are colonists, it is entirely reasonable to latvify their kids as an ultimate fuck-you to the SU and its imperial ambitions.
Those kids need to be taught the evils of their ancestors and how Latvia forgives them.
