>Know from the games that mechs can't detect and shoot down small recon drones, at least at the time of the clan invasion (no laser AMS yet)
>The AMS they do have has about 250m range and shoots 4 missiles per second
>They can't intercept artillery
>JDAMs are basically guided artillery, by the way
>Know that a "trinary" is just 15 mechs
>Know that mech weapons top out at 2000m

Your opposing force will be Carrier Strike Group 5 of the US 7th Fleet. Normally it's comprised of 12 ships and 75 f-18 aircraft, with the USS George Washington as it's flagship.

>I'm also swapping the other 11 ships with Ticonderoga-class cruisers, which each have 122 tomahawks ready to go and two 54-caliber naval guns that can fire 20 rounds in a minute, but I'll keep that to myself.
>The clans will probably see this from orbital recon scans anyway, so whatever.

Battleground location will be some island in the Philippines.

>I let the clanners show up first with their 15 mechs
>Some stealth drones are orbiting at max altitude to paint them
>The cruisers begin shooting guided shells at the mechs. 220 in total are pigeon holed on them within 60 seconds.
>70 f-18s drop 10 JDAMs each. 700 (You) seeking bombs rain down like hail from hell
>We're assuming at least some mechs are dead or damaged at this point
>The cruisers open up with a combined total of 1342 tomahawks
>Even assuming all 15 mechs are Novas with double AMS, standing within 250m of each other and that they're all still alive, that still limits them to a combined missile shoot down rate of 120 per second across their 250m radius.
>Tomahawks move at about 900m/s, which means they will cross 250m in 0.278 seconds.
>The mechs will have shot down 33 tomahawks by the time they hit, meaning 1309 tomahawks found their targets.
>1309/15 = 87 tomahawks per mech. Even if we assume tomahawks have the power of just regular LRMs, that's enough to kill any mechs still alive.

My prize for winning is a star of female elemental soldiers, btw.

What do you mean? It's battle armor rating. The tabletop game uses it as a number to check for critical hits. If you're suggesting that battlemechs would be immune to modern explosives, I think that's unequivocally untrue whether you look at the tabletop, the books, or the video games.

Well, then I'd point to rifles and the implicit assumption of early lore that combat ranges are so short because 'Mechs are swimming in EW (before the Raven came along and threw all that into chaos).
Or, I'd just take advantage of Omni capability to fit UMUs and LRTs and laugh all the way home that you bid away your ASW capacity in a littoral battle.

Wow, it's nothing, but lets say I'll humor you. We're using laser guidance on all the munitions and perhaps IR seeking for the shells. This is the equivalent of using TAG to negate the accuracy debuff of an ECM suite (which has a humorous range of 200-250m btw).

>UMUs and LRTs
The Clans invented UMUs for elementals in 3059, with the IS adapting the tech for mechs later. I don't think the Clans would have them on their Trinary mechs. Not at this point. Like with laser AMS, I'm presuming we're in the Clan invasion decade and this isn't available yet.

As for the LRTs, you'd have a point... if they didn't have that pesky range limit. My Cruisers will be at least 40km off shore and the carrier at least 200km back.

Ranges are fiddly. The rules say flat out at the start of modern editions that they're entirely there to facilitate fun games on a limited space. If you use optional rules, there's extreme ranges, and then LOS or horizon range. LOS ranges are infinite, as much as you have physical sightline across any distance.
Flak ammo or cluster autocannons with a decent pilot can hit any attacking aircraft with decent regularity, if you use LOS range they can punch back at range fine enough. Unless you're breaking the batchall they know you're bringing a shitload of aircraft, too.

It could do with testing but using primitive weaponry rules properly and LOS range or anti-aircraft return fire it's pretty possible to shoot down a completely ridiculous amount of modern aircraft attacking a group of mechs.

As the one being challenged, I'm entitled to designate the location of the battle. But, if they want to land on the carrier under some kind of dezgra logic, the cruisers will still be able strike them with impunity while the carrier crew finds a way to sink the ship. We're over deep water than most battlemechs are made for. They won't survive.

Anonymous No.64286174 [Report] >>64286336
>>64286106

a lot of the planets in BT have their major population centers centered around their capitol and spaceport since the succession wars blasted most of the population to radioactive dust, therefore it's easier for an invading force to "claim" a planet if they snag the starport. Also having a "smaller" battle to claim the planet is preferable to having an orbiting WarShip pound every inch of infrastructure to glass, since now you've expended all that effort with nothing but a barren rock to show for it.

They were in the early stages of the invasion. They believed a bunch of what they would call honorless barbarians were going to adhere to their stupid dueling rules and engage in gentleman's combat instead of using the only advantage they had(numbers). They eventually wised up, but by that point the IS had managed to capture and reverse engineer enough clan mechs that the tech gap had closed, and the clans lost their biggest advantage.

I think what he means is that there's a line between "the sphereoids make a false bid, break zellbrigen, and then the clanners chimp out" and "the sphereoids bid an artillery battalion and politely ask you to stand on the X". The Clans are stupid enough to take that fight, absolutely, but they're also under no compunction to loiter around inside the killzone, and it would make a very, very funny story to be able to tell everyone else about the time you crushed an entire nautical fleet because they entered the batchall under the childish delusion that nobody was going to bomb them in return.
