it's the difference between (intentionally) unintentional humour, and intentionally intentional humour
> "erm, you're under arrest!"
is the former, seen in TPM and to lesser extent, AOTC
>"uh oh!"
is the latter, seen in ROTS
what nobody, not even MCU Phase 2+ writers understand, is that everything that fans like is the former, not the latter
for example, most Whedonisms are (intentionally) unintentional; that is, they make sense in context and for the character to say
>man walks down a street in that hat, people know he's not afraid of anything
>at last, we can retire and give up this life of crime
>it seems to run on some kind of electricity
>he's adopted
some directors get it
>this green whore
>are you kidding? I'm blind!
>I believe in you. Cassian said I had to
but most don't. they make characters who are intentional comic relief. and that's when the audience screams "flanderisation", "comic relief", and "cringe"
even Lucas himself committed this error
people laughed at C-3PO, so he created Jarjar
he didn't understand that C-3PO is played completely straight and the humour is unintentional, whereas Jarjar does stupid low humour like slapstick pratfalls
