Wagner convicts/Storm Z
Based off experience with my own country's incarcerated population, a lot of them would sooner kill themselves then be compelled to rake the yard and russia somehow got 200k of these guys to take up arms and run into the killing fields. Effectiveness aside, it's the actual "how" part I'm curious about

>you will get an early pardon no matter what you did to get locked up
>and a fat paycheck by snowgeria standards
>if you survive
out of the minority that does come back most go and immediately commit crimes like rape/murder/arson/theft/etc. Ending up in jails pending charges and conviction. They can then opt in for another round ukranian trench grindr

First of all, they're offered pardons and payment and they're told it'll be an easy gig, they have no idea how dangerous it is, and obviously that's much better than life/death in prison. That alone is good enough motivation, but they also "persuade" lots of convicts into joining by torturing them, "forgetting" their food, turning off the heat during the winter due to "budget cuts", essentially forcing them into it to survive.

russian prison just kills you at some point, usually through pneumonia, which is considered a feature rather than a bug. add in a dash of imagined invincibility of your military and you can easily pull up some conscripts.

I read Prigozhin told them they were probably going to die in Ukraine, and his men would shoot them if they didn't fight. He didn't sweet talk them, but it was like you can either die in this shithole or die in Ukraine and have a chance of winning your freedom. And he got thousands of recruits this way traveling from prison to prison.

I somehow doubt these guys really understood what they were signing up for, but (a) Russian prison and (b) Prigozhin showed up personally which surely had some effect.

The pardons was the bigger one from what I know. The "new elite of Russia", as putin put it.

Convicts and criminals in general are -really- bad at balancing risk/reward. From a rational point of view crime is a terrible way of making money. Rewards are usually poor and the risk is high.

If you live in the west, chances are prison in your country is a hotel. In Russia it's a rape camp.

OP probably lives in a first world country where prisoners treated humanly. This is R*ssia we're talking about. A painful agonizing death is preferred to any kind of life inside of R*ssia.

I thought I read somewhere that a number of prisons had to close down because Prigo essentially drained them of the entirety or near-entirety of their inmates?

Correctional centers in Russia (even around Moscow and St Petersburg) and in Crimea and the meme republics are expanding, the FSB have started lobbying for their own pre-trial detention centers because others are already overcrowded.

Russian invading army uses three letters as marking, Z V O, meaning unknown ( Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelenskyy esoteric hexing?), then storm Z penal unit appears, followed by storm V https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storm-V which is even worse (for example indefinite contract lenght instead of 6 months). Does it mean we are going to see storm-O units. How could they be even worse?

That's because the Russian military has adopted the Priggo scheme. There were some shutdowns during his era, but now the Russian state is doing the same thing, except that they also have the power to put people in jail in the first place. What could go wrong?

Weren't they recruiting women this way too at some point? I remember there being significant buzz about it a while ago, considering Russia normally doesn't let women in the army (I think), but I haven't seen or heard anything about it in a while

Did they stop doing it because of bad press/poor results or did they run out of women to chuck into the meat grinder?

Russians have a history of penal battalions going back to WWII. While the primary draw is receiving a pardon for a life sentence, another main draw is that the criminals honor can be regained through their service which explicitly requires them to either be wounded in combat or perform a heroic deed. In Soviet penal battalions pardons were only granted when the troops get wounded in combat or killed so they know exactly what theyre getting into. These retards want their criminal record expunged but what they really want is having their reputation and family's honor restored

Tasked with invading from Belarus, to dig in around Chernobyl, again.
At least long enough for charges to be placed inside the reactor buildings, which will then be used to hold Ukraine (and Europe) hostage under threat of nuclear disaster.
Alternatively, exchange Chernobyl for the Zapo-Zipo, whatever it's called, powerplant down south that was already fought over..

He really did go from prison to prison like that and address the inmates gathering in the yard. Putin strikes me as a cowardly and mediocre sort of person who is play-acting at being Peter the Great, but I do get a kind of "historical" vibe from the late Yevgeny Viktorovich, which made him dangerous.

OP is correct

Slavic prison traditions is an extremely big topic but basically in prisons the cream of the crop is the thief. Russians have a concept called Thief in Law, which I won't go to deep into but basically these guys are prison royalty and they reject all authority and make it a point not to ever cooperate with normies and the state in any way. They will go out of their way to fuck with authorities not because of some deep convictions or hating Putin but just as a big fuck you to whoever would control them. There are less of them nowadays as criminal life is easier and the state less repressive but it still is very much a thing. I guarantee none of those dudes would ever join Wagner. Ironically for all their bluster it was mostly the roosters who would join.

Soviet, and now Russian, government is unironically pure office politics(with added extortion and murder) After Stalin, it wasn't about charisma, or consolidated power, it was quite literally who is in the current room with you that matters. Throw 10 people in a room, and if 9 of them don't like the 1, it doesn't matter if the odd man out is "Emperor of Russia For Life", he's disappearing, and the general public will simply shrug and carry on with what the new boss says
