That does more damage but requires bigger boom and more guys of higher quality.

Sabotaging a pipeline in tribal territory can be done with a grenade or even a hacksaw and any dumb haji who'll cut into a pressurised pipe for allah. It can probably be more or less done safely too.

I imagine that a car, a chain and a bit of farm-hand engineering could probably find a way to wreck it as well.

The advantage of doing it this way is that you can do it along the pipeline every day in different spots and they can't patrol the whole thing in any effective way, you're always going to have opportunities for a goat herd to watch the patrol go by and then signal the guy with the grenade or whatever to come out and put a hole in the pipe.
