Is the SAA a fun gun? How many do you think are lost in the deserts of Arizona and New Mexico?

yes
if you load it with hot .357 or 44mag
if it doesn't try to rip your arm off, the reloading process just seems like a waste of time

Of course. There's a reason why they have remained popular despite being rendered obsolete years ago.

The time you spend looking for one that would have rusted into a solid lump of red iron by now would be better spent saving money for a Ruger Blackhawk. It is a departure from a true SAA copy, but readily available and far more durable.

Not only that, it's also safe to load and carry with 6 cartridges, unlike the traditional SAA, which can only be carried with 5 and an empty chamber under the hammer.

They're fun because in the 45 colt chambering you can shoot a 300gr bullet at 700fps, not necessarily because of the gun itself

To be fair, most SAA clones have a rebounding hammer so you can carry them fully loaded but Ruger's transfer bar system has a significantly higher degree of safety.

Is the Blackhawk the same size as a SAA?
My dad has a .44 mag Blackhawk. That’s a big iron, lemme tell ya.

I think the 44s are Super Blackhawks which have a larger frame. You really need it for Uncle Bubba's Pissin' Hot Reloads he put together while blackout drunk on bathtub gin.

Ah ok. When I was looking at SAA clones, I was checking out the Uberti’s. They’re pretty reasonably priced and are true to the Colts in design it seems. Granted a less desirable finish unless you get a nicer version.

I advise proceeding with caution on those. They look very pretty but the actual mechanical quality is iffy. I used to work at an LGS and we had a batch of Ubertis to move that were constantly having problems either new in the box or right after being sold. Perhaps there are certain models or times where they made better ones but those things were a complete nightmare to deal with.

There are CASS shooters who do tune them up and run them though, so it is possible to make one work as good as it looks. I'm just not sure if that requires skill, luck, voodoo or some combination of the above.

I do wander the desert with my SAA and I am here to warn you.
I have a 1973 Ruger Blackhawk, which WAS upgraded, and a bullet in my leg.
Check the year of your Blackhawk before you carry 6.
Otherwise, great guns.
More accurate than I am, very reliable, be sure to tighten the screws every now and again, or loctite them if you're the peculiar type.

Here it is today, almost 5 years later, dark spots are shrapnel still under the flesh.
Bulge on right side is the mass of scar tissue that surrounds the shrapnel.
I'm the luckiest man in the world.
I was wearing waxi boots and the bullet struck the buckle, and turned into shrapnel, then peppered my leg.
I have a ton of fragments still in there, but it didn't hit the bone and I can still run/climb/crawl/sprawl just fine.

They are fun, I had one in 9mm but it fell apart on me after about 120 rounds and that really soured the experience for me + the one I had had a really sharp trigger bow at the bottom so I couldnt spin it without shearing off a layer of skin. Easily replaceable but I did have to send it back in for repairs and when I got it back I sold it. It was fun owning one but I learned that my Ruger Wrangler gives me the same joy as using a real bigger SAA for a fraction of the weight and ammo cost so I just roll with that

Probably caliber dependent but I just stick the firing pin in-between cartridges, and it works just fine.

This. If you're going to buy spaghetti revolvers, buy them from an importer that does their own independent QC like Taylor. They have gunsmiths that will tune them as well.

But they are, both in wear resistance and in ability to tolerate stoutly loaded ammunition.
If you want to slander the blackhawk, slander it's looks but not it's results
Anonymous No.64469250 [Report] >>64469344
I collect single action revolvers. My favorite are rugers. I have become pretty knowledgeable on the subject of ruger single actions.
This is my 1976 super blackhawk in 44 magnum.
I would like to pick up an older blackhawk in 357. Either three screw unconverted or a pre 77 one without the warning billboard on the barrel. I currently have a 1993 blackhawk with the 4.6 inch barrel. Its probably my favorite one to carry on the property and plink with but the warning label is unsightly.
My most recent purchase was a poor flat gate single six from 56. It was rusted to hell and the finish is nearly gone but it had stag grips and it was hella cheap. Its a project gun.

Okay I'll regale the tale.
First: how was it? Oddly painless, and not very scary at all.
Getting shot felt like being punched with a soldering iron.
Adrenaline kicked in immediately and the pain was gone completely.
The most painful part was actually the tourniquet.

Anyways get ready to add it to the pasta

>been shoulder holster carrying my Blackhawk for months
>boomers always say to cowboy carry it, stupid boomers
>it has a drop safety, it's a modern gun
>always carry it fully loaded
>go to funny loosey-goosey farm range where you can do silly shit.
>setting up my guns at a table
>range hot, load guns
>lay loaded Blackhawk in its holster on edge of a table
>grab range bag and lift it off of the table to put it behind me
>range bag knocks Blackhawk off the table
>blackhawk falls to the ground RIGHT next to my foot
>barrel muzzling my ankle
>upside down
>hammer strikes the poured concrete floor
>BANG
>cowboy_oh_fuck.jpg
>boomers were right
I yell: "GODDAMN COWBOY CARRY"
>RSO is already sprinting towards me
>shouting commands like "lay down, lift your leg"
>kick my leg up, spray blood all over my hat and clothes
>he tourniquets my upper thigh
>limp off to a buddy's car to drive to the nearest road for an ambulance
>missed DnD that night, sucked cause I'm the DM
Honestly it wasn't so bad.

The Uberti Cattleman 12-shot .22 is one of my favorite fun guns to shoot. Of course, I had to send it back to the factory twice, the second time they just sent me a whole new gun. But worth the lemon process for what I got at the end of the day.

They are chonky, but otherwise absolutely solid. It is theoretically possible to break the transfer bar which makes the gun not shoot at all until fixed, but I have never seen it happen.

The new model vaquero is smaller than the old model vaquero.
I have an old model and my friend has a new model. The new model is about the same size as my italian single actions, just a little larger.
The rugers have coil springs and its a little beefier than the italian ones. My biggest problem with uberti or pietta is the extremely soft screws.
>>64470409
That could have been a lot worse. Did you have it on quarter cock or did you really just set the hammer down on a primer?
Thats one of the reasons why when carry a single action, its a transfer bar ruger. Id rather have six safely than risk it with one of my cimarrons.
I only load five when i carry one without a transfer bar.
Anonymous No.64471878 [Report] >>64472869
>>64471349
It was on quarter cock. And it has the transfer bar, it's not a spurred hammer.
I can actually make the hammer drop from quarter cock by pulling the trigger hard.

Anonymous No.64472886 [Report] >>64472950

something is mechanically wrong with that gun because the very nature of having a transfer bar means the hammer cant physically hit the firing pin without the trigger being pulled
