What motivates soldiers in combat besides survival? It makes sense to risk life and limb if you're protecting your home, but what keeps people fighting in the many conflicts where their home and loved ones aren't particularly threatened?

I've worked some somewhat dangerous jobs in the industrial sector. I can see people mananging it that way and just treating it as a job in relatively low intensity conflicts, but it seems like that'd become increasingly difficult as things got bloodier. Maybe not for some though.

It used to be loyalty, and sense of duty to your community and country men. Plus heavy monetary incentives if you make it back alive. Also if you fought and made it back, you were respected, a warrior, strong, considered a hero to some.
You would fight to protect your family, community, and country all from perceived threats of the "enemy."

I had a corporal explain to me, in basic, that he wanted to run(section attack) up that awful, steep hill to "kill cunts". And I understood because that's what me and the other late teen early 20s guys there joined the infantry for.

I guess if you get brought up in a very pacifist or meek or low T home then you probably don't have that phase as a young man, wanting to fight and do army shit, but for me and lots of others brought up on patriotism, war histories and so on, it was natural. I grew out of it when I learned that there's only a few things/people worth fighting for and that most killing is wrong but I still have a bit of that romantic's love for being a hardass fighting man; even though I never really was and few others are either.
