Honfidence is necessary for transition. All passoids I know started out with extreme honfidence and because of that honfidence, were able to gain the skills they needed. But I can never pass because I don’t have honfidence. I’ve always been scared of failure and ridicule so transitioning is simply impossible for me. HRT repping is the only way for me and it’s the only way for most of us. If you aren’t confident you aren’t going to make it so don’t bother trying.

anecdotally i do kind of notice that a lot of the trans women i know who passed early on HRT were pretty attractive and popular as guys and they sort of carried that confidence with them into transition. on the other hand if you were a shut-in virgin with low self-esteem before transitioning it's really fucking hard to pick yourself up off the ground, it's been the story of my life the past few years. i just can't stop hating myself even though people i know say i'm cute and that they wouldn't have known i was trans if i hadn't told them and so on.

I wouldn't call it honfidence but you need to reframe your transition goals to be about relieving your dysphoria as best as you can rather than something literal like passing or stealth. I'm 3y hrt, don't pass, but after accepting this at a very very low point and working on myself have experienced a big relief of physical dysphoria in the past year. Social dysphoria is still really difficult with how im treated while not passing, but whatever the treatment is I know in my heart it's still better than being seen as a man.

My physical dysphoria is at a manageable point, like I said my social dysphoria is still a mess but it's not because I don't pass it's because of how hostile people are towards me. It isn't ideal but my starting point wasn't ideal and its not like I can get surgery anytime soon (nor do I really want it) so I'm taking what I can get and being happy with it.

You can still want to pass and can have passing as a goal but I’ve just found it much more successful to think of it all as continuously trying my best. If I had the amount of shitty social interactions I’ve had with passing still being my one and only goal I would’ve given up by now, but reframing it lets you take it on the chin and keep moving forward.
