Let's say you have a couple, they have a kid. They get given £300 each to live on whilst looking for work, but if they live together they get £230 each. And when the sums are so low, that £70 difference is life changing.
Ok so they then have three options.
1. Stay apart, live in isolation, let their child grow up seeing dad as a part time fixture, let mom struggle by herself to run a household single handedly, let dad suffer from depression and isolation.
2. Lie, say they are separated but are actually together. This runs the risk of prison time, paying back all money given, being named in the newspapers, and being barred from future funds. Their home is taken, the child is placed into a care home and both parents end up homeless.
3. Work, so let's say mom is raising the child, dad finds a job. All welfare money to the house hold is lost, so now dad has to support the entire family on a single salary, which will pay £12 an hour before tax. The family is materially worse off.
So let's say mom also works to get extra money. Who looks after the child? Nursery school, which can cost hundreds a week. So mom and dad are both working crushing jobs to pay to keep their child in a nursery school, and by the time they get home are too tired to read or play with the child, give them an ipad.
The system traps people into misery and poverty
