Its uncommon to have 3 or 4 generations occupy one house, and an accepted practice to place older family members into care homes.

These are cultural practices and exceptions exist ofcourse, but broadly speaking the relationship between family members is fundamentally different between Asia and Europe. There's no value judgement here, both have advantages and disadvantages.

Let's say you have a couple, they have a kid. They get given £300 each to live on whilst looking for work, but if they live together they get £230 each. And when the sums are so low, that £70 difference is life changing.

Ok so they then have three options.

So let's say mom also works to get extra money. Who looks after the child? Nursery school, which can cost hundreds a week. So mom and dad are both working crushing jobs to pay to keep their child in a nursery school, and by the time they get home are too tired to read or play with the child, give them an ipad.
