Theres a lot to it. We use feedback from others to get a sense of our worth to people generally. And you are right, being properly socialized matters. Not because the opinions of so many matter, but because the process teaches us to match our confidence to the true merits of a crowd, so that we reject some based on knowledge and values. Thats what confidence is, the peace of knowing we can overcome challenges and which ones matter. The trick, of course, is being socialized with the right people, where the community has values that accurately reflect what is mutually good for everyone.

This is supposed to begin primarily with affirmation from mature parents (which is why parenting requires those values). After that, consistent groups of peers (if the peer group keeps changing to different values, its difficult to feel consistent feedback). So those who have struggles with poor parents or unstable peer settings can suffer gaps in that development of knowing who they are and are supposed to be or how to act.

If one feels uncertain engaging in new peer groups, they will behave that way, shy or reticent, anxious from the fear of rejection or attack. A lot of people develop the problem of not being able to relate, a lack of competence in peer norms (because they werent consistent) didnt develop competence in shared interests or values, and do get rejected. Sometimes thats beyond their control. So they become socially avoidant or even spiteful and malevolent...

Such a person can end up forever testing that search for feedback.
