The idea that men become more attractive as they age is literally nothing but a socially acceptable way to say that women date for money and status, which is true. Lots of dating problems for college and recent college aged men just come down to men being out competed by women in education and income. As women are more financially independent this stability doesn't outweigh looks as much as it used to, but it can be an advantage for 30 somethings.
