People often forget that governments and institutions generally play the long game, measured in decades or centuries rather than voting blocks of 4 years. Its not just LGBT, its all the minority interests that came out - BLM, Antifa, LGBT, MeToo for the Feminist movement, and just on and on. For the last decade or two every single minority interest in the West has been given top billing and I imagine by now the governments involved have a pretty good picture and a long list of names of all the people they need to get rid of in order to have a near-100% unified, all-majority voting base.

In 2010 everyone at my Uni was forced to read this one book. The book essentially was "I am a black woman you white people are evil give me money" but worded in an academic way. The message was that extreme and we were all forced to read it. It wasn't portrayed as fringe but rather as in a position of power over us.

Now I think it's possible to view that 2 ways:
