>>24551299>What is Web Novel General?A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royalroad, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more
>Why read web novels? Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.
>Why write web novels?Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See https://graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

>>24552697 (OP)This thread was made by FFF anon. Sage it, don't use it, report the OP for spam, get this stupid FFF fuck off this board so we can finally post in peace.
Three /wng/ threads in the catalog is ridiculous, FFFaggot.
>>24552711triple-thread displays /wng/s natural virility and massive throbbing writing-cock

>>24552729we're retardproud of it too
>>24552729SLOP SUPERIORITY
>>24552711It's not, I'm not FFF anon, the last one barely counted as thread. i have made atleast half of the /wng/ threads. My posting experience on 4chan is unfortunately relegated to /b/ (when i was a teen) is there a rule against three threads.
>>24552745Yeah man, we don't need three threads. We don't need two threads. /lit/ is a slow moving board, you don't need to create a fucking thread just because the bump limit was hit. You create a new thread when the old one is on page ten or already archived. Taking up three spots on the catalog will bring in hostility and autists.
>>24552729>>24552739>>24552702I'm sorry guys, I'll be more careful in the future, mods please don't spank me. Can we get back to writing please, WRITING WEBNOVELS PLEASE. FORGET THE DRAMA
>>24552745there's 0 need to make a new thread just because the old one is at the bump limit. a general thread doesnt need bumps and the board is slow enough that it will last a lot longer before falling off page 10

>>24552760>comma spliceYou're not the pontual baker anon, you're an impersonator who created this thread prematurely
My name is not important... What is important is what I'm going to do. I just fucking hate this general and the gong farming worms feasting on it's carcass. My whole life is just cold, bitter hatred... and I always wanted to seethe violently. This the time of vengeance and no story is worth saving. And I will put into obscurity as many as I can. I also baked a thread a few weeks back, following the theme of the OP.
https://pastebin.com/xLuER42w
Ive taken the liberty of creating a new Pastebin for anons. I know of at least six other writters ITT, but I believe these were the ones who were okay being in the rentry
next time I get a bad review, I'm gonna astroturf the thread with hate about me and link the thread in my removal request
if you ever say anything mean about me in thread I'll pretend to be you and say nigger in a post promoting your story then send that to the RR mods
>>24552788>I'm perplexed at how popular it got.I don't think it's perplexing. It's competently written on a technical level, it uses popular tropes and signals them well in the front-page material, and the story itself has no glaring elements to put people off
How many stories can you name that actually do this? 95% of RR stuff is culled just by the 'technically solid writing' part
It's slop but written well. Lots of people want that. People are settling for sloppa that ISN'T written well, they want it so bad.

Did any anon here ever try posting at /qst/? Somehow my writing input increased 500% during a small quest exercise I did there but that was because I was always put under pressure to write and deliver updates. It was like playing through a roguelike speedrun whereas writing bulk chapters for an actual novel feels like playing a card game with endless rounds
>>24552824if that pressure motivates you then you should start up a serial
for me it's the exact opposite and having an impending deadline and people to disappoint it suffocates the mental liquidity I need to be creative
>>24552795seriously though why are there 0 results for shortstack on scribblehub

ok but how's the AI review witch hunt going?
>>24552807I do remember, yes, was just trying to get away from that hell of a thread. I did get a wrist slap, I learned my lesson.
What numbers would you consider to be a 'success' on RR? What would make you think that you're doing well?
Reminder that Broschizo was right.
Apologize.
>>24552873To be fair, the other thread has been archived and the drama has quieted down some, so it worked out in the end.
>>24552882One thousand followers or making to rising stars or getting rent money through Patreon.

>>24552882It's a high standard I know, but an actual "success" to me is a top 3 Rising Stars run, and in the medium term, converting enough of those 3k+ followers into patrons to at least be making parttime wage money
If you're a newer writer, I think landing on RS main is a good goal to shoot for. But it's not a success story, really.
>>24552882The go-to rule is above two thousand followers and above, not a million views, not 10000 readers. Two to five thousand followers. Also patreon conversion over 1k USD for minimum monetary success.
The main goal as the anon above me said, is to achieve status on the front page, ie rising stars main.
I got around to 50 usd on patreon after I built momentum, burnt out, and lost all of that energy.
Which is why it should be sad their is other ventures you can follow. SMUT/KDP. Royalroad is suffering from it's own success.
>>24552883>two weeks ago a schizophrenic man decided that all the hostile posts on the entire board could be linked together with overuse of โbroโ and an odd typing style, and declared it to be FFF>we now now that he was right the entire timeCrazy world. Apologize
>>24552883what were his ancienf words of wisdom?
>>24552697 (OP)I think FFF Anon's goal is to become Norman Boutin.
If you keep this up, your work will gain fame through infamy.

>>24552901>Royalroad is suffering from it's own success.royalroad the site is doing wonderfully, and writers are too. but competition is stiff because lots of pros and long-term writers are trying their hand there now. plus there's the lame discord cabal bs that became meta.
that said there is a shockingly large, dedicated readership to find on royalroad. and it's far from impossible to reach as someone breaking in, you just need a consistent schedule + an ad.
i don't think there's anywhere quite like it on the internet. that archmage story went from totally unknown author to 15k/month earnings in a month. no publishing and agents bullshit, just posted a story and ran an ad. Purely merit based. Where else can that happen? nowhere, so far as I'm aware
royalroad has its issues undoubtedly, but we should be more grateful for the phenomenon it represents. it's opened a semi-reliable path to self publishing that literally didn't exist for amateur authors until recently
>>24552917>knew about RR years ago before the first covid micro boom>it's transforming into a mirror of the publishing industry as it becomes saturated by more profit motivated peoplefuck. I missed the gold rush

Now that the mask has slipped we must do our due diligence that the fake friendly "bro" persona only exists to garner good reviews and sympathy. In actuality, this is a narcissist that cares only for itself and will throw tantrums at the slightest provocation when it doesn't get what it wants.
>>24552948>bitch about grifters saturating the webnovel community at large>NOOO THERE'S NO GRIFTERS WE'RE JUST HAVING INNOCENT FUN WITH NO ULTERIOR MOTIVESbet that was this nigger
>>24552935shit i need to fix my sleep schedule
typos aside, iโve noticed a trend on royal road where a lot of stories that are on rising stars, trending, etc., seem to be composed of two or more themes or concepts, for lack of my ability to describe, that in my opinion clash. they appear to be mixed together without much thought, if any, and so beneath the whole story lies an incorigible, discordant aspect.
many of the rising stars with a majority of 5 star reviews have in common the lack of his uncanny feeling when reading by virtue of their focus on one concept or idea.
>>24552948no that was a schizo from /wg/ who is obsessed with magazine publication. fffman falls into his classification of gong farmers alongside the rest of selfpub slopsmiths
>>24552955that gross strawman you presented is me actually, and no im not f anon
>>24552946Thank you anon I shall go back to taking nootropics and mixing pills to try and raise my writing cadence
>>24552958I know, they're the same person. The random seething about RR being headquartered in Israel gives it away immediately. It's likely he's trying to get people to submit their work to magazines so he has less competition, or some other delusion of his.
>>24552957it's because a lot of them are derivative from other success stories and are trying to cash in on trends ASAP
it's common advice in webnovel communities to take the story you want to write and just slap on whatever trend to try and get more eyes on it
so we have a new schizo who's conflating all of the different personalities he dislikes into 1 person, huh?
>>24552968List of schizos:

it's not unusual for a general to have one bad personality who posts constantly and is responsible for a slew of always present shitty behaviors. it's very common in fact, because generals attract people who have nothing going on

>>24552983>uses an incredibly archaic insult most posters wouldnโt understand>it sounds funny and very poorly communicates his distaste for his target group>doesnโt use insults like sewage cleanee, septic tank drainer, garbageman that would better communicate his middle-class disdain for the lower classwhat did he mean by this

most of it was just plain old derangement
>>24552999He is a deranged shitposter even if he claims to be a successful magazine author. By his writing, I think he may actually be an undergraduate in english literature, so that may be why he keeps using antiquated terms.

>>24553016I noticed him say "I'm published in my country", as though his country had to be delineated as its own category and isn't implicit to the statement
I suspect he's eastern european and got published in some vanity mag
>>24553016i also enjoy reading Pepys, Jonson, Shakespeare, Chaucer, and mostly pre 19th/20th century authors. you donโt see me randomly capitalizing words of significance and calling people i dislike gong farmers or tanners or heathens.
>>24553037I meant more in the way that he probably see our work as "beneath" him, so he uses that expression in a way to delineate him as an academic minded high individual laughing at pig shitters. As I said, he is deranged, I didn't mean in the way that reading high-brow literature makes you a literary snob.
>>24551723>overly hornyI'm guessing you're talking about Lyonettes sister? I really dislike the whole red class smart whore thing she has going on.
Absolutely despised the Palace of Fates arc. It did have a few chapters I enjoyed seeing but overall it has been a disaster for mankind. The Toren chapters were fun but you do have a point with having to see someones perspective on the new lands over and over again getting tiring. My favorite chapter in the past few months has been the Gothica one.
I have a feeling we are never going to get back to Erin. Having her skills be used for an entire massive arch with consequences that are higher than ever while she isn't present was an odd choice by paba. Since the Death of Magic polymorphed her I think we've had like 4 chapters with her pov and it has been fucking Bug's Life the movie with absolutely zero progress in her returning.
>>24553031No, I mean
>magazine author>successfulPick one
Speaking of overly horny, reminds me of one thing that happened in Reborn as a Demonic Tree: two female characters having a masturbation competition using wooden swords. The story never featured sex before and one of the characters who did it was oblivious to anything sex related.
>>24553059That's wild, can you link the chapter or would it be too hard to find

>>24553060>>24553068 (me)
Here, this is a review talking about it, it was just wild. Dropped the novel for other reasons, but I've never expected something like that lol
>>24552941>and write top-grossing shortstack smut insteadYou mean Princess of the Void? Was weird seeing that one in at the top of the Rising Stars listing for so long. In a sea of Litrpg's and Progression fantasy's some smutfic about shortstack aliens is just chilling at number 2 for a week or so.
>>24553065What do you write?
>>24553061>>>24553029 (You)>Added. Never heard of moonquill, is it any good? Its just a place I "park" my writing catalog at.
For that, its perfect.
Free, and i can drop links to chapters or whole books, or my whole catalog. Once I figured out how to cut and paste from my text editor at home, to the dashboard and get chapters published... I like it.
My one complaint, is that is "shifts" your chapter number, and you have to watch out for it, and change it and update it. A slight niggle.
Its one of the smaller WN sites though, I think.
If you're tired of emailing and everything else, just post links?
This is my cure for that.

methinks there will be a tidal wave of new sloppa soon
before you fuckers post it to RR let me look through your cover, title, and blurb. slopbaron anon will steer you right. your launch is everything, for better or worse
>>24553111I will remember your kind offer, sir. For now, I will keep backlogging.
>>24553103I mean, yeah. I for one have given up on writing for about five years, English writing longer then that. Then suddenly this general comes up and actually inspires me to write fiction again for the first time in half a decade. I'm having fun writing about made up shit again. It's been great so far.
I have now read the following 4chanslop
>Reincarnated as a Mecha
>Yellow Typhoon
>Born Under a Black Sun
>Volume 1 + Interludes for The Crow and The Rabbit
I'm making good progress I think. Now for my thoughts on the story as of the end of the first volume. First of all, I owe you five American dollars which I believe is a fair price for that volume. Figure out how you will enable that money to hit your account. When compared to the last one I caught up on (Black Sun) your setting is not as viscerally entrancing to me and makes my brain itch to try and figure out what is being alluded to. On the other hand, you also don't have any shit I think is fucking dogshit in that volume either. Something recently I read which has somewhat similar vibes, at least for the protagonist, is Otome Heroine Survival (japslop) and I will say Ferene compares favourably. Despite being low fantasy, you also somehow aren't a historyfag, or maybe you are and just don't care that leather armor is made up D&Dism (among other details that don't really matter to the story). I don't like yuri but I read a lot of it somehow, so I can say you fall on the good side of it and don't overly exhibit the voyeuristic, exhibitionist, AGP, or footfag vibes so many other yurifag writers do. Congrats. Along those lines I also think you compare favourably to The Hero-Killing Bride, which again has some general vibes in common in my opinion. Onee-san and Giant as well. You fit in with these sorts of titles, no clue if this will mean anything to you at all but interpret it as a favourable comparison.
Other than that, your writing is probably more competent feeling. While my personal preferences didn't make my brain go crazy with dopamine on your writing, it was a good read. Finishing the volume left me wanting more, which is probably a good thing. I have chosen to give a follow to your series as a result.
I will keep reading and reviewing 4chanslop that gets posted to this thread. So far, two have been short and underwhelming, and two have been far above the median, with one hitting a lot harder for me while I recognize the other as (quite a bit) more competently written. That's pretty good so far I think.

I read the first book but dropped the series in the second. Author didn't seem to know where he wanted the story to go and the romance subplots added no value. I don't have any interest in watching this dude flirt with some random girl at a bar. If it was a main love interest that would stay throughout the novel then perhaps, but the author makes it just casual sex with a bunch of different women. If he wrote the smut scenes out I would at least have some respect.

Should I write a yuri tragedy webnovel or is there no market for it?
Am I the only one bothered by the lack of gendered romance tags in RR? How are people even supposed to find GL and BL (or avoid it for that matter) if the closest thing you have to this is the bland *Romance* tag, which becomes even harder to tell if you're not using trans-pandering tags like Genderbend? As someone writing the former, it feels like an underhanded disadvantage to building the right audience compared to platforms like Scribblehub that offer wider classification, especially when you consider Royalroad acts pretty much like its prissy left-wing cousin policy-wise.

>>24553886Best you can do is put (BL) at the end of your title. It doesn't bother me because I don't read such stories but a tag would indeed be nice for those both those wanting to see them or not see them.

>>24553892Only catches the honest ones, but yeah.
>>24553871If you're in doubt, do yourself a favor and read Omaegotoki. It's the hardest yuri tragedy out there, and my top 1 GL webnovel. Professionally translated, too. I'm a friend of the author since his novel's heyday, and it turned out to be so popular that its anime is already listed on MAL for airing in the near future. I remember to this day how it was the catalyst of my dislike-to-like shift for webnovels.
>>24553920>I'm a friend of the author since his novel's heydayYou know, most times I'm skeptical of anon's claims, but this one feels quite honest. I suppose /jp/fags are built different?
>>24553931As a south american who specced in english know little to nothing of japanese so I used DeepL to keep pestering the author in his comment section to release the next translated volumes and we ended up as friends in Master Duel. >>24553948>Again, very gritty and great novel you won't regret reading it if you do look it up.Oh, I'm not the same anon who asked about yuri, I was just curious about your story.
>keep pestering the author in his comment section to release the next translated volumes and we ended up as friends in Master Duel. That's nice, I imagined so. Usually people are rather accessible before blowing up in (relative) fame.
>>24553957>I was just curious about your storyIt can be summed up as

>"delete my memory through shock therapy because I WANT TO READ THIS ALL OVER AGAIN"Amazing how stunning one person's introduction to literature can be.
Why doesn't mecha work in novels?
>>24553974kek, sounds like me, I kinda disliked literature as I spent a lot of my high-school reading time in classics for exams, but only enjoyed some of them. >>24554028Portal fantasy?
What I admire the most in the Japanese webnovel sphere is the complete lack of discards cabals on the path to success. Those authors build their work from dust all the way up to an anime/manga adaptation while having 0-1 comments in each chapter and only a dozen reviews at most in their Syosetu (eastern RR) page.
>>24554047>0-1 comments in each chapter and only a dozen reviews at most in their Syosetu (eastern RR) page. How does that work, then? Agents crawl through and find the good stuff?
Or does JP just never comment on shit and even the top performing stories are 0-1 per chap? I don't get it
>>24554047the japanese webnovelist is much more noble than the western slopper
>>24554035Kinda of. The idea is that the first chapter starts out like a portal fantasy, but the twist is that by the time the plane lands, the military's handled everything. Goblins get mowed down by machine guns. The demon lord gets carpet bombed. The power she gets ends up being completely useless compared to standard military gear.
The story's actually a VRMMO serial about a superpowered wageslave who uses her powers to cheat in video games.
>>24554063>Goblins get mowed down by machine guns. You just gave me the awesome mental image of goblins fighting in WW1 style trench warfare bayonet rush, and I'm thankful for that.
Sounds interesting, are other people superpowered also? Will the portal figure out more later or is it removed from the MC?
>>24554061A nippon writer's pipeline to sucess is slopping freestyle on webnovel platforms > revised light novel volume sales/pay-per-view closed platforms > (in case of moderate success) a manga publisher will offer a contract > (in case of high immediate or tardy success) an anime publisher will offer a contract
>>24554077Also no I never dug too deep to know why a lot of anime and manga adaptations have so little author-reader interaction you can just call them any time of the day and they will chat with you because there's no one else messaging them. Maybe it's introverted genes at play.
>>24554077>>24554097seems like it must the LN part that really matters, I guess? the WN scene might actually be kinda small. even tiny success cases get way more than 0-1 comments on rr sloppa
i had no idea
>>24554105im looking into it myself and Shangri-La has 170,000 bookmarks, 80,000 comments, and 120 reviews. i think you oversold how poorly webnovels perform
>>24554105Most times they do need a commissioned artist and a couple middlemen to set up an LN in good shape, especially if simultaneously translating to overseas, so while I have no idea whether they gamble the budget themselves, novel translation companies like Sevenseas do actively seek them out as each step has less margin for independent agency in publishing
>>24554070Portals are there, but they aren't really plot relevent outside of being a punch occasionally. It's mostly just a justifification for the VRMMO running on magitech. And that's justification for a lot of other stuff. Superpowers aren't super common, but a good chunk of people are using them to cheat. A running gag I have planned is very important supers secretly playing video games at weird hours and being absolute degens.
>>24554168>A running gag I have planned is very important supers secretly playing video games at weird hours and being absolute degens.I can imagine it lol. Sound good, looking foward to it, and good writing anon!
>>24554105JNC is branching out from just translating Japanese LNs to taking western slopper works and turning them into LNs here. This route may be available to westsloppers if this year is considered a success by JNC I guess.

Itโs getting easier to write. 14,000 words published in under a week. The chapter that I published right now is super fucking crazy lewd though, so letโs hope it doesn't alienate my meager audience.
>>24554323Also, I appreciate the anons here who have taken time out of their day to review Black Sun. I want to read your stories asap, but I also am positive I will be struck down dead before I finish this book, I had a dream where I die this October. Eight or nine more chappies and the first book will be done. And shit, I wrote four this week. Maybe I'll actually finish this project?
>>24553920How is omaegotoki a "tragedy"? I read four volumes years ago and it's just a very bland shoelacer power fantasy with paper-thin characters. Sometimes it tries to pull some horror stuff, which feels really out of place and weightless next to all the bland slice of life and shounen battlan.
>>24554028You might want to try a different approach, because I've seen fucking dozens of fictions at RR with this exact same opening, almost word for word. Are people really this creatively bankrupt?
Finally finished outlining the plot for my first story. I wrote most of the first chapter and decided to look back and read it. It's so awful and it demotivates me. Should I just continue writing and go back to edit things in a week, hoping I've improved a bit in that time? Should I rewrite the same damn thing over and over until it's good? Should I stop caring and just publish slop that even I don't think is good?
Expert opinions requested.
>>24554387You are likely to change your mind about the first chapter many, many times before the end. So yes, you should get to the end first and see how it looks then.

That's the entire reason I was asking the author for more translated LN releases, but I ended up just binge-reading the finished webnovel instead. About what ensues next, every single character has dreary stuff happening to them in the way the reader can't ever be sure who dies next, as no one is exempt from death flags.
>How is omaegotoki a "tragedy"?It all depends on whether one is willing to consider events like Berserk's Eclipse as a tragedy compared to the more genre-fare tragedies of schoolgirls with depression.
>just a very bland shoelacer power fantasy with paper-thin charactersNow we're entering opinion territory, I won't press this issue since you can simply not have enjoyed reading through it years ago, but what Omaegotoki can state for itself is that its success is undeniable enough to have warranted an LN, a localization, a manga, and an anime adaptation in sequence, out of something as niche as a grimdark yuri story, looping back to anon's question of whether he would even find a market for these types in the first place, so it must be doing something right to say the least.

how long should a blurb be? i generally try to hook in my readers in three or less sentences but i have a suspicion such a small blurb might not be good for RR.
>>24554767Cont. This is not a critique against heavy or even poetic prose, but if you want to be overlong the lines must hit hard enough to be worth it instead of solely drumming more of the same information

Almost none of these RR authors, if any, can truly grasp the psyche motivating wuxia / xianxia protagonists to act the way they do, so they simply give chink characters a two-dimensional selfish and cold personality because they cannot comprehend the tenet beliefs moving neoconfucianism as the outstanding Asian zeitgeist. In short, it would be as if a chinese wrote a Tolkien-esque fantasy and took out all the centuries of western virtues inbuilt in our culture for two-dimensional optimistic heroism, which the nips did already kek.

I'm back after reading more 4chanslop. I put Rabbit on pause to go for a volume of something else so I can savour the rest of that. This time was FFF-Class Unlucky Antagonist.
My review of the first volume is... its fine. Sometimes the author writes things in an odd way. It mostly flows and feels like a real story. My main issue is that I didn't find it very interesting at all, the first volume was finished out of obligation. Either this is a matter of personal preference where it's not written interestingly enough to overcome an uninteresting (to me goes without saying) subject, or its written so uninterestingly that even though I would normally like the content I can't get into it. I don't think I'd call it shit, but I also would have to force myself to catch up on the story. At my most positive I'd say it's more compelling to read than Key's AIR which literally out me asleep at my PC when I tried reading it. >>24552965I will answer some questions you all might have. I try not to troll anymore because it's an addiction, but I do want people to try out literary magazines if they can. I use a trip now so you can filter me if you want.
>Why do you post "anti-gong posting"?To explain myself and my intent: I want people to think critically about their work, to work on themselves and push themselves to the limit. This can only be done in an environment where publishing isn't as easy as clicking a button. Yes, the traditional magazine market is waning, but I still worked on myself by submitting to magazines. When you do, you are editing thoroughly and writing for a goal. When you get accepted, you feel much better about your abilities and you can tell you are improving by trying to write for a market with curation. Prestige isn't everything, but it's a safer bet than uploading it to the aether, to never know if you have gotten better or not.
>Why do you want others to get in magazines? To belong to a community for speculative fiction. Every good writer in our field had to get through magazines first, and it took years, if not decades, to hone their craft. Name any big sci-fi or fantasy or horror writer, and they probably began in magazines. My favourite writers all went through the traditional publishing, albeit very amateur, route. H.P. Lovecraft believed in curation in Weird Tales. Gene Wolfe said you had to work on a short story for at least two weeks, kneading it like dough, and said you should always self-edit and rely on your own voice. Kurt Vonnegut said he got good by writing for magazines, because the feedback he would get was immediate. Not many magazines offer that now, except maybe Beneath Ceaseless Skies.
>What do you have against self-publishing?It's not up to me. You can choose the self-publishing route, but I doubt it is for everyone. Just as the magazine route isn't for everyone. I hope this is food for thought.
>Why are you "anti-gong"?I do this all because I used to be in everyone else's position, I was posting my slop on RoyalRoad and in critique threads way before RoyalRoad existed. I was a self-published author for a bit. I am not ashamed of it; I just wish someone gave me advice and told me not to publish something before it was ready. Thanks for reading.

>>24555087>uploading it to the aether, to never know if you have gotten better or not.I would argue that being rated by actual readers + watching your followers go up is a significantly more accurate gauge of sloppa writing skill than one dude or a team of curators with specific tastes picking your short story to publish. Readers are what actually matter.
>Name any big sci-fi or fantasy or horror writer, and they probably began in magazines.Brandon Sanderson addresses this point in one of his lectures and says that this is an artifact of a developing industry, how that meta was created by the culture at the time, and that he does not recommend new writers to pursue it because these days you're better served writing novels. he says that publishers don't even particularly care if you've had stuff published in magazines; it's a very small plus that might have them pay slightly more attention but not a meaningful factor, and the quality of your novel submission is what matters
If you like short stories though, go for it king. I'm just commenting on two parts that stood out to me. /wng/ is for web novels which are generally long form though, so im really not sure why you hang out here if not to exclusively troll
I kind of want to write an otome lesbian romance web novel. Like "I'm In Love With The Villainess"
Based? How does that stuff do on RR?
>>24555087iโve read some works from magazines iโm looking to post to and in my personal opinion, every month thereโs about only one story or so with passable prose. every other story is written with technically competent prose, though the words they choose seem to either harm their story from a purely aesthetic sense, or otherwise lack soul. their stories also tend to lack clarity where it matters, not to the point of utter nonsense (else they wouldnโt have been published) but in a clearly amateur sense.
say what you will about Lovecraft but all the old pulp writers, no matter how derivative or formulaic their works were, were miles above the short story writers we have for the fantasy/sci fi scene now.

I am mentally ill and take meds but my psychiatrist is MIA and isn't confirming my refills so I don't have any right now
>>24555122Brandon Sanderson might've been right about short stories being an artefact, but I still stand by the assertion that you need to write a short story before you can write a novel. Many writers believe this to be the case, especially the ones I mentioned: Lovecraft, Wolfe, and Vonnegut all wrote short stories first and stood by this as a milestone for any author. I don't think Lovecraft could have written his novella, At the Mountains of Madness, and his novel, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, without writing numerous short stories first.
I like some web novels, actually. I prefer Chinese web novels and Xianxia; I don't really see the appeal of LitRPG but people can read whatever they want.
The trolling is supposed to be lighthearted, but I tend to take on characters and personas online for fun.
>>24555128Good enough critique. But I see that more as an opportunity to get something of yours published. When you see garbage traditionally published, and you think "I can do better than this," that should be the sign to you that you think like a writer. I don't like everything published in Apex nor Clarkesworld but I like the community enough to read every so often. I also like that they're more experimental, but that's only because I appreciate pushing the envelope. The other magazines that focus on a certain style (Cosmic Horror Monthly comes to mind) usually seem stale by comparison.

On the subject of magazines, is there any platform receptive to stories told in the Conan style? Not in setting or genre, but a series of short stories and novellas featuring the same character at different points of time without an ongoing plot between them.
Can I write or spend meaningful time reading web novels if I'm not some sort of sexual deviant like a fag or a furry?

>>24555287There lived a man who loved to farm his gong,
He tilled it out the stream and sang a song:
"O smelly gong and slimy shit I reap
From what arsehole did fetid bile come seep?"
He sang along the river, filled with shit,
And rowed his boat, a laughing, howling git.
"I love my gong, I love my pungent slop,
I wouldn't change this slop for gold nor drop,
O hear this song about the horrid gong."
He rowed as carrion birds began to throng
And wheeled about the sky; they multiplied,
He rowed until the birds descended down
And threw him off his boat, to drown, to drown!
He gave a cry: "I'm no artist! I lied!"

A schizophrenic person might use the insult "gong farmer," an archaic term for someone who handled human waste, due to various symptoms of their condition. This could stem from delusions of others being "unclean" or "contaminated," reflecting a distorted perception of filth or low status, or from disorganized thought and speech (formal thought disorder) where the term is used idiosyncratically, loosely associated, or as an odd but potent word choice to convey general disdain. Additionally, persecutory hallucinations or delusions might introduce such demeaning language, or the insult could carry a symbolic weight, representing perceived moral or social degradation based on its historical connotations of dirtiness and ostracism. In essence, the use of "gong farmer" by a schizophrenic individual is often a manifestation of their internal disorganization, distorted perceptions, or emotional distress, rather than a malicious intent.
>>24555420An autistic meltdown is an intense, involuntary reaction to overwhelming sensory, emotional, or environmental stress, distinct from a temper tantrum. It occurs when an autistic individual's nervous system becomes overloaded, leading to a temporary loss of behavioral control. This can manifest verbally (e.g., screaming, crying) or physically (e.g., hitting, rocking, withdrawing), often accompanied by feelings of intense distress, anxiety, and a reduced ability to communicate or regulate emotions. Meltdowns are not manipulative behaviors but a survival response, and recovery can take significant time. While role-playing is primarily used to help autistic individuals develop and practice social skills in a safe and controlled environment, which can indirectly reduce anxiety in social situations, it is generally not a direct intervention during a meltdown. Instead, it serves as a proactive tool to build coping mechanisms and understanding, potentially reducing the likelihood of future meltdowns by equipping individuals with better strategies to navigate challenging social or communicative scenarios that might otherwise trigger overwhelm.
