His arrival in Season 3 is complemented by returning character Sharako Lohar, played by talented trans actor Abigail Thorn, who made her debut in Season 2. During a Westerosi winter the rotational seasons proceed as normal, but everything is just generally colder and shittier, the winters aren't just years of February in Russia
Tyrion has seen 9 winters in his 25 year long life. It has been summer for nearly 10 years when the story starts.
>>24566244Yeah but frozen meat and veg only last so long. So if your winter lasts five years, one of which is cold enough to consistently keep buried food cold, you will die before you can plant more crops or reseed enough grass to feed your herds.

>>24567046Corruption and short-sighted administration do not result in basically guaranteed death for yourself and everyone around you, though.
>>24567058Natural catastrophes that kill people and do large damage in ways that could have been prevented relatively easily do happen. Also massive corruption happens even in countries at war where people know they could die if they lost, or in countries with widespread famine.
It sounds to me like those lords probably thought Lord Stark was being overly cautious, or were in debt and didn't want to give up on the taxes from that grain being sold, or were incompetent and failed to make the necessary arrangements. Or they just hoarded food for themselves and their families and didn't care about peasants.

which do you subscribe to?
>>24567722Why would the others build a wall to stop themselves from invading Westeros?
>>24566749It’s clear that George put no thought into the logistics of food hoarding for the long winters (and the series is probably best off for avoiding the topic entirely).
Are the lords responsible for hoarding all the food in their granaries? Even the portion of the harvests that’s owed to the peasants? Do they decide on when the food is released, or is it like a deposit in a bank whereby peasants can withdraw their portion of food? What prevents peasants from storing their own food (assuming it’s simple infrastructure like salting the food and burying everything in the cold soil)?
Even if lords were selling their excess produce instead of hoarding it (if we look past the fact that their portion would be quite small compared to the total harvest), wouldn’t there an opportunity for merchants to buy that food and hoard it themselves for winter?

The fact is that initially GRRM thought the multi-years long seasons was a cool idea (and it would be in a sci-fi setting) but came to realize that nothing would survive a winter that lasted literally _years_ and quietly stopped mentioning it in later books.
>>24568825>multiyear long seasonsuhh does this dude know how seasons and years work cuz that doesn't make a lot of sense
>>24568825That's a shame too because if he mentioned large warehouses of food those would be critical to seizing or destroying in war.
>>24568839I thought littlefinger was using the vale to buy up and store a bunch of food for this winter and then was going to sell it at a huge markup when the rest of the war torn realm is starving. >>24568830If winter can last for years (or even just one year) everything would die; deer, rabbits, fish, even trees would die off.
>>24568839There is no way a quasi-medieval society could store up enough food to last multiple years, even modern people like us would be eating MREs long before the multi-years long winter was over.
>>24568851The only thing that would make sense is that you can still plant and harvest stuff but the output is a lot smaller and cold snaps have a high chance of killing everything. Idk about the north tho it seems like they would be completely fucked with these seasons. How would they even be making any money to buy food in the winter? Northern food stores must be pretty big but I doubt its gonna last 5 or 10 years so that only leaves trading stuff for food. What does the North even produce to trade food for? In the books its talked about how the old people just walk out into the woods and die so the rest of their family doesn't starve in the winter but I bet that only helps out a little.
>>24568903in the south people make do with some small scale agriculture, as
>>24568859 anon said.
but in the north when multi year winters come, people turn to cannibalism. once winter is over the practice is abandoned out of shame. but there are those who can't abandon it. these people are exiled to skagos.
skagos is full of the descendants of not just Northern peasants but also nobles like Starks, Boltons, Umbers etc. the ones who refused to abandon cannibalism and thus were ereased from the family trees as if they had never existed. but the blood still runs strong on skagos and the human meat enhances their inborn magical capabilities.
once this final winter is over, it'll be the folk of skagos who repopulate the North, invading like the first men of old.
this is known.
>>24566482I once read of a theory that littlefinger believed that power could only come from those who could take it by any means, and that he'd die after fucking a bunch of people over while fleeing from the others and end up killed by some peasant boy for food but he didn't care cause in his eyes his philosophy was affirmed. >>24570118At no point did Tolkien say that Orcs can't reproduce, as far as I'm aware. LotR mentions Saruman fielding half-breeds of Orcs and Men which implies sexual reproduction. This is further clarified in later material.
>It became clear in time that undoubted Men could under the domination of Morgoth or his agents in a few generations be reduced almost to the Orc-level of mind and habits; and then they would or could be made to mate with Orcs, producing new breeds, often larger and more cunning. There is no doubt that long afterwards, in the Third Age, Saruman rediscovered this, or learned of it in lore, and in his lust for mastery committed this, his wickedest deed: the interbreeding of Orcs and Men, producing both Men-orcs large and cunning, and Orc-men treacherous and vile.So yes, at least as of LotR there are Orc babies.
The movies leave out that icky part and portray something like Tolkien's earliest idea of Orcs being originally created from the earth (though even there it isn't said that means they can't reproduce on their own), which means that all the based culture warrior Tolkien understanders on youtube don't know about it because they haven't read the books.

That's the sound of George scrapping 5 pages of The Winds of Winter he wrote yesterday+an entire chapter before that
George just flew over my house while shouting that Viserys and Daenerys were Blackfyre pretenders.
George just handed me a contract to assassinate Ryan Condal for $5,000 and an advanced copy of Winds of Winter. Should I take it, bros?

Only Michael Talks About Stuff realizes that the outline was never abandoned
>>245713212.5 of the last 3 paragraphs have already been abandoned.
>>24568859>The only thing that would make sense is that you can still plant and harvest stuff but the output is a lot smaller and cold snaps have a high chance of killing everything. It still takes X amount of time for this or that food crop to grow. From the chart, it takes 55-75 days for carrots to reach maturity. You can't plant wheat and harvest it a week later.
The glass gardens allow the Starks to continue growing food in Winterfell through the winter. The hot springs (or Weirwood roots) keep the whole place warm. Without Others it cannot get to truly unliveable temperatures or else the entire Night’s Watch would die every winter.
>>24571321Some stuff has been abandoned and some stuff was just retooled for other characters. Wouldn’t be surprised if he had some vague idea how to get to the end initially, but bloat has pretty much ruined those prospects. Especially if you read all the leaked proposals for the trilogy.
>first was wotfk>second Dany’s invasion>third the battle of the dawnThe last book was supposed to feature the Nights Watch predominantly too apparently. Bet you Jon wasn’t even going to die and leave the NW in the original draft, that’s why his Long Night dreams are at the wall.

Why didn’t the children of the forest work tools beyond leaves and twigs? Were they just retarded? I’m assuming they COULD pick up a hammer or a sword, but they chose not to?
Was this cultural or ingrained into their very being?
Whoever or whatever race predated the Valyrians were also rather simplistic in comparison to the Valyrians, who were actually human.
>>24573181George is probably going for humans being an abusive bunch. The non-human races respected or were more in tune with magic/nature, however good or evil they happened to be, while the humans just… took advantage of it to levels that broke magic (the Doom) for a time.
Humans probably excel at infrastructure, even sorcerous infrastructure, just going by Valyria’s favor with magic for so long. George has said it’s cruel and capricious, but for some reason Valyrians could work it into infrastructural form? Sacrifice must have been the oil of the Freehold.
>>24573205there was a part in one of Brans chapters, I think the very last one, where a child of the forest was talking about how a lot of the magical races were going extinct and how the children just kind of accept that. Bran offered the human perspective that if Humans were going extinct we wouldn't just meekly accept it but instead fight against it at all costs. I thought that was a pretty cool difference and also hyped up humans.

>Jon's parentage remains a topic of discussion among readers of the series, as his mother remains unidentified.
Can't be serious right? GRRM outright confirmed it in a blogpost.
>>24573431>"Where are the rest of you?" Bran asked Leaf, once.>"Gone down into the earth," she answered. "Into the stones, into the trees. Before the First Men came all this land that you call Westeros was home to us, yet even in those days we were few. The gods gave us long lives but not great numbers, lest we overrun the world as deer will overrun a wood where there are no wolves to hunt them. That was in the dawn of days, when our sun was rising. Now it sinks, and this is our long dwindling. The giants are almost gone as well, they who were our bane and our brothers. The great lions of the western hills have been slain, the unicorns are all but gone, the mammoths down to a few hundred. The direwolves will outlast us all, but their time will come as well. In the world that men have made, there is no room for them, or us.">She seemed sad when she said it, and that made Bran sad as well. It was only later that he thought, Men would not be sad. Men would be wroth. Men would hate and swear a bloody vengeance. The singers sing sad songs, where men would fight and kill. It's more like the Children see themselves as part of the system they live, where man sees themselves as the master of it. The children had their time, and even had their moments of defiance when they broke the Arm of Dorne and fought the humans. I subscribe to the theory that the Others are either exiled or rebel spirits from the Weirwood who are most likely CotF. They also refuse to die with the world. I also like the implication of Giants and Cotf fighting.
>>24573889the others being rebelious spirits of the cotf who refuse to accept the dying of their race or maybe magical races in general would be cool af. I can sorta root for the humans and the others in this scenario.
>>24573921It's what the Pact is. The Others will only inhabit the Heart of Winter and not go to war with men or his kingdoms, in exchange men must offer sons with royal blood, bastards, to add to the Others numbers. The Other probably experience time differently as well, explaining why despite the pact being broken for hundreds if not thousands of years, they are just now starting to move against Man.
>The lives of trees are different. They root and grow and die in one place, and that river does not move them. The oak is the acorn, the acorn is the oak. And the weirwood … a thousand human years are a moment to a weirwood, and through such gates you and I may gaze into the past."
Rate my theory bros. Show Euron = book Aegon, and Show Night King = book Euron.
Starting with show Euron = Aegon, this is basically built from (i) the fact that the Golden Company ends up fighting for Cersei to defend KL against Dany and (ii) the assumption that D&D got the main story beats right but don't give us the how/why. GC seem fiercely loyal to Aegon so hard to imagine they end up in Cersei's employ without Aegon being involved.
Not sure there's much or any evidence in the text, but the premise of the alliance would basically be the enemy of my enemy is my friend - Dany is going to show up with dragons and neither can hope to beat her independently. Cersei and Dany both have a much easier time working with Aegon than each other. I don't think Dany is going to be interested in taking on a partner when she arrives to Westeros and will probably be the most suspicious of Aegon's parentage of any character. Cersei is still horny over Rhaegar, so she'll finally get her Targaryen prince.
Anyway, that begs the question what happened to Euron in the show? Well, we know his main goal in the novels is to steal a dragon...
I pirated and read the books in 2015 and said I'd wait until Winds and Dream were out to buy a full set.
Man, that aged poorly on everything except my wallet.
>>24573737Arya's portrayal in the series was dogshit, as well. Instead of being the actually messy, impulsive brat she was in the books (which I'm not saying as a bad thing, GRRM makes her work) in the tv show she's just le heckin badass girl with the perfect comeback to everything anyone says to her. It got annoying really fast, especially those Marvel-tier scenes with Arya and Tywin where Tywin just smirks like "heh, this girl gets me." Just awful.
>>24572421Winds is coming tomorrow, trust me dude.
>>24570282I think gurm's grimdark reputation is overblown. He has about 2-3 really bad things happen per book, the rest is just survival and, like you said comfy politicking.
>>24568850I always assumed those Winter storehouses were in the Stormlands and Dorne. Although I can't remember if it's ever established that winter ravages those south lands just as much as the northern ones. I doubt Dorne is absolutely covered in snow, right?
>>24574854I need more books with giant plots and scheming in it. I dont care if its medieval or modern. Had this one idea for a book where the thought was that a member of the british royal family (a made up character n all that jazz) has decided that he wants to actually reassert royal power once again over modern UK and how, realistically, he might go about that starting from the position of modern UK. I don't know if a book like that exists and the amount of time required for just looking up british law and the political climate of modern day UK seems daunting.
>>24574863The Iron King is a pretty good scratch for that itch and Gurm often cited it as a big influence. Haven't read the rest of the series but the fiest book is pretty good, though, the scheming stays fairly local. I dunno if the rest of the series expands on the scope of the politicking.

>>24572097The first book george wanted to right grew to five books since Dany has still not invaded Westeros. The ideas he had for her have no doubt been partially given to Aegons invasion, the golden company and their elephants were probably hers at one point to be a mirror to the Men of Rhun and the Mumikil to further show the Dany/Sauron thing.
Still crazy that he still hasn't written book 2 of his plan.
>Bet you Jon wasn’t even going to die and leave the NW in the original draft, that’s why his Long Night dreams are at the wall.I wonder how often George wishes he could just rewrite the first book to make it click with his later ideas, which would also mean needing to rewrite the second book and the third etc, until hes bloated the new Winds even more. No wonder he's stuck and painted himself into a corner. Honestly Geoerge could just release a second edition of Dance with whatever narrative retcons he needs to make winds come more easily
>>24575654>I wonder how often George wishes he could just rewrite the first bookI don't think George wishes to write anything ever again.

>Daenerys invading Westeros
Worst plot idea that the fans want
>>24575732the 3rd head isn't a targ according to gurm thoughbeit
>>24575654Another funny thing is he completely reworked her character too. She was actually going to be a ruthless conqueror, in the original draft she murdered Drogo for killing her brother, and was driven to conquer westeros, which makes the angle the show took with her kinda make sense since i bet those ideas D&D got were from GRRMs original outline.
>>24575862yes. Jon isn't a Targaryen.
>>24561484GRRM already said the Third head doesn't have to be a Targ, so its either Tyrion or Bran. Since we know how the series ends, its probably the later.

>>24574777I like most of it. I just don't think Aegon would marry Cersei when he's holding out for Dany. And CerseiCoin is currently plummetting. Imagine marrying her right after her walk of shame. There's definitely better women in Westeros for Aegon to marry right now, most obviously Margaery and Sansa. An Aegon-Sansa betrothal is due based off the Tourney at Ashford theory.
