The "Performative Male" Archetype
>It is now "performative" to read at coffee shops and other public spaces
How are you contending with the recent social backlash towards reading in public?
What is to be done more broadly about this budding stigma towards the /lit/erati?

Isn't this just describing some girl's ex? How is he some sort of Jungian archetype that exists in the psychosphere of early to late 20s lib women?
Anonymous No.24573248

Because it describes many women's exes. An archetype is definitionally Recurrent.

>performative
We all are performing to some extent. For example you aren’t 100% honest about every single facet of your life or thoughts to even your closest family or friends. There’s nothing wrong with being open with things you like, with the knowledge that expressing those things will attract certain kinds of people. Life is too short to care about being judged by others for doing the same shit they do

I've thought it was imperative my entire life
It seems really homosexual, like you've got a good book, you're in a public place, and you've got your hand wrapped around a nice hot cup of coffee
Oh isn't that so delightfully faggotical, to sit in public and partake in such a wonderful tradition of public reading!

If you are not doing it performatively then you aren't going to care much about this backlash.
Reading in public is never preferable to reading quietly at home. Every time I've done it it's because I have a few hours to kill waiting for the train or what have you, and I definitely do not feel deterred from it now.

Different guy, but I go stir crazy being isolated at home so much, so reading outside is necessary at times. Usually I'd pick a library, though. Can't be in four walls 24/7.

There's a bit on Firing line with Tom Wolfe where they talk about some bank clerk on the subway reading Proust or something, how it's an attempt to say "I am above this." . It's not just a vibe you're hitting townies with.

It's very different than say, playing vidya, where you're saying "I'm not a part of all this".

It's kind of hilarious to see Didion (deeply classist and conservative) sandwiched between Angela Davis and Bell Hooks.

On this image, I shop at Trader Joes and like Didion, and wear loafers on occasion (albeit without tassels). None of the others apply though.

one thing about the stupidification of society:
right now you're considered a pretentious genius for reading jd salinger and bell hooks.
imagine how bad it's going to be in 20 years.
you're going to be a savant if you've read and understood shakespeare, samuel johnson, milton, dante... you'll be a modern oracle, rattling off knowledge from lost civilizations,.

I genuinely get treated like some autistic super genius at work because I read as a hobby. In every other regard I'm just your average working class white person. I just enjoy literature, which for them means I'm bascially the smartest person in the office (which I might be but the bar is quite low).
