Every book club i've joined had at least 3 of those ""people"" who would judge the crap out of you if you enjoyed ANYTHING other than highbrow literature. Lord forbid if you really like fantasy superhero stories like I do, those dumb nerds will get so passive aggressive its crazy.

Some people don't actually enjoy reading, they just like the sense of intellectual superiority bestowed on the act by public perception. They will read only what is safe to read, what has been approved as a classic, or serious literature.

But, on the other hand, if you are bringing superhero comics to a book club and complaining about not being respected, you are clearly an uppity mouthbreather with pretensions beyond your station but no intention whatsoever of developing yourself beyond your current abysmal limitations.

So enjoy the retard club, i guess, you fit right in.

Imagine creating a gaming club with the intention of finding bros to have LAN parties with, push your skills and enjoy yourself, only to get a constant influx of middle aged married women who want to play candy crush or what have you and when you explain to them that is not the focus of the club they just go
>why not?! It's videogames all the same you snobby meanie

Ought to be able to appreciate mid for the missteps and potentialities not taken advantage of. That can be more intredasting than a great Gordian Knot read chasing the Author's exegetical tail. Try to steer critical remarks that direction with these types.

>"What would you have rather seen from X"
>*specific lines that weren't up to prose snuff for an example

I do this, because everything I stray from it and just read whatever and get disappointed. I grew accustomed to a high degree of quality.

I'm right there with you. There are thousands and thousands of books across many genres that are almost universally acclaimed, when I started to really getting back into reading a few years ago (mostly novels) I just picked the ones that sounded good to me with subjects that I was interested in and explored authors from lots of different regions. Of the dozens of books I've read in that span, I've only been significantly disappointed or underwhelmed by a few of them. The Counterfeiters by Andre Gide and White Noise by Don Delillo being 2 I remember

As I'm sure OP has demolished thousands upon thousands pages of Brandon sanderson for a word count rivaling proust. He still should stick to his general and let the literature board discuss literature

im like this except the opposite. "safe" or "classic" reads to me like something that has already been mimicked a thousand times in other things i've read. i only read that which i can never find any person in real life to share a conversation with about, as i am the only person that i know that has read the work in question. reading is for nerds. i may be a nerd, but i don't want to talk to other nerds. i will take quotes i read in esoteric works and use them out of context to elevate whatever i have to say to people who would otherwise not care at all what the words i am saying mean, many times never attributing the quote to the original author or even implying that the quote came from someone other than myself.

But like you surely don’t mean graphic novels, right? I can see why someone would be annoyed that your smelly autistic ass wants to discuss graphic novels (and if they’re cape shit they’re actually not even graphic novels but rather just collected runs) rather than actual books.

I say this as someone who has a pull list and goes to the LCS every Wednesday still.
