I haven't read Kant in a while :(
Anonymous No.24612665 [Report]
I'm gonna do a two week retreat to finally force myself to understand this book. If I wont make it I'm giving up on Kant

It's the same ideas in both languages. Being a tryhard purist is one of the most cringe personalities.

the real definition of cope,
if youre not reading it in its original might as well just not bother, just my two cents

I'm reading him tomorrow in English. Grasping the concepts has less to do with your fluency in German and more to do with your general cognitive capability and discipline.

I read him in both languages and it's almost the same, though the German has words that "fit" the concepts better, the ideas and the concepts are the same

Ideas and concepts are always the same. German isn't special because you mash 8 words together and call it one word.
For instance: sprachgefuhl: literally, "language feeling"; in broader English, "linguistically intuitive."

OH MY GOD THE GERMAN IS JUST SO PURE ANGLOS COULD NEVER BY JOVE U CAN'T BELIEVE THIS HIGH AND HOLY PERFECT GERMAN CONCEPT *SPLOOGES MIDWITTICISM EVERYWHERE*
I don't know why /lit/ can't grasp the fact that concepts/ideas/prototypes, not words, seize the soul. Even Shakespeare's best draws upon imagery, i.e., conception of language.

then lets just get rid of the original and replace it with english translations, that would be better no? and then proceed with the whole literature canon. Dont think much would be lost since the concepts are the same as you say

That's literally what happens over time as languages die out. Thankfully, the digital world allows for mass permanent archiving. Feel free to read the original for the purity of the author's expression, but don't seethe because concepts and ideas are universal. Language is just one construct, after all. It's trite to say but no less true: we all live under the same sky.

bro look beyond 'concepts and ideas' philosophy books are more than that, dont fit your mind into one box, thats what you do when you read translated works. Behind every german word theres a whole world, do you think that is the same on the translated text? Monolinguals just shouldnt reply, or plebs for that matter

I speak 4 languages. There's nothing so unique or ineffable that Kant draws from that it's impossible to share the entire idea. Academic imprints do exactly what you seem to be mystified by: give copious context along with translation.

Read it in German, my man. More power to you. Relax though.

took an advanced ethics class in college and this was the text. was the only non-philosophy major in the class. heavily filtered by it, unfortunately.

Already done. Most people already read Greek/Roman/German philosophers in English. Originals are only kept to be sure no one maliciously modified it.

I know English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese. I prefer reading most french/spanish/portuguese texts in english. Borges did too. Pic related.

> There's nothing so unique or ineffable that Kant draws from that it's impossible to share the entire idea.

well then you missed the whole point of german idealism then, i encourage you to read them again starting from böhm. If you think or just dont see that theres no idiosyncrasy in highly particular authors such as Kant then theres no point in arguing with you, some people just cant see some things and thats fine too, just dont go full absolute and say theres no reason why you should read the original and read the english translation instead. Some people enjoty not reading the text, but derive greater pleasure from reading whats conveyed between the lines

As I mentioned, academic texts provide more context than you, as a German national and layman (or perhaps even student) could ever natively and intrinsically appreciate. Your notion of superiority by purity is vastly overdrawn.

cuz most people here are anglo brainwashed, just looks at the top /lit/ chart dominated by anglos.

>Borges read in English
because thats what was available at the time and place geographically speaking, and the language learning resources weren't as readily available as they are today.

After learning other language my reading in English got drastically reduced, the English text now looks to me as unimaginative, restrictive, extremely simple bordering stale, it just doesnt hold to many other languages

It depends on the context. It can be Geist (spirit), Seele (soul), Verstand (understanding), Gedächtnis (mind like memory storage).
