Does /lit/ not read slop because of literary elitism?

I don't read it (anymore) because it is generally not interesting to me, nothing to do with elitism.

There's nothing wrong with elitism. The moment elitism was dropped it was moment low effort sloppa flourished.

Meryn Cooper has never dreamed of being one of the Bonded, the King’s elite warriors who form mental links with massive, vicious direwolves. She’s made peace with her life scraping by in poverty in the shadows of the castle. But then her younger sister Saela is kidnapped, stolen across the border by the immortal monsters her country has spent centuries fighting.

And Meryn’s world falls apart.

Desperate to cross the front and save her sister, Meryn enlists in the army—only to discover that there are Bonding Trials this year, where all soldiers are forced to risk their lives in an attempt to connect with a direwolf. It’s too late to turn back; Meryn is thrown into the deadly competition against her will.

Now, she’ll need to survive the next four months of training at the castle if she wants a chance of finding Saela. Everything here is a test, from the brutal classes where one mistake means death, to the glittering court parties where every smile hides a knife.

To make things worse, Meryn is bound to a feral direwolf who refuses to communicate. The other trainees would love to spill her common blood. And her gorgeous instructor, Stark Therion, is as malicious as the wolves himself.

Everyone is out to get her—everyone but the dangerously handsome crown prince, Killian Valtiere. But if she loses her heart to him, she may also lose her life.

And the castle is hiding dark secrets…

Most literary slop is geared toward women and that's why I don't read it.

Seriously I can't think of any recent YA novels geared toward boys

That slop is actually boring. Very boring.
You read one for interest, and it seems OK. Language is basic. First person view. The climactic moment is PIV sex. Everything else is a way to get there in tidal fashion very reminiscent of foreplay.
Let's take another one. The setting is different. The language, POV, sexual structure is the same.
Well, let's try another. The setting is different. The language, POV, sexual structure is the same.
At this point it seems the books aren't written by real person but AI. If you read enough you'll see there's no way to separate Yarros from Maas from someone else from Ao3 fanfic author. It all reads the same.
My gripe is how it's possible to enjoy the same style, stuff, and plot structure over and over and over again.

Obviously this is a giant simplification, but you can broadly put any great literature into two camps: Brilliant technique or poignant depth.
Obviously the greatest stuff is a blend of the two like Shakespeare, that manages to beautifully express eternal ideas. But generally you have authors like Nabokov, whose crafted prose can wow you but generally lack anything for the reader to ponder on thereafter, or messy repetitious authors like Dostoevsky, who can stay with you long after you're tired of his meandering paragraphs.

That slop satisfies neither category. It is not well written, it lacks any depth. There is nothing for the reader except entertainment. It is printed television.

I only read slop. If a book requires knowledge, thought, or paying attention, it's not for me.
Anonymous No.24661509
I read progression fantasy slop.
I just don't like romance and especially don't like romantacy. Not because of elitism, but because it isn't entertaining to me.
I want the plucky protaganist to get in a 3 way fight to the death with the shadowy dark lord and noble prince with skeletons in his closet. Not him and haw about fucking them.
