He was a pioneer and the first author of cosmic horror. Without him there probably wouldn't be an Alien movie. HR Giger was inspired by him.

this is fair and probably what many who read his stories feel (although you're probably just repeating memes), but it's about gradually uncovering and then being directly faced with something that contradicts your view of the world and reality, and does so in a way that offends your ideas of what shouls be and makes you impotent and insignifact. one can feel this when exploring any rabbit hole while in prolonged isolation, or witness it in schizophrenics. lovecraft's pretty good actually
