Unfortunately the main one has a no-scans policy, so if people don't link to them separately in e.g. the description they get lost if it's only on the main one. Hi again, You don’t need to worry about scanning more of Okami no Seiza, my typesetter imported the late 70s Kodansha release for dirt cheap+scanned all of it I’m 5/7 volumes done and hope to finish the translation scripts by close to Xmas. Suikoden has also been completely typeset and uploaded to mangadex.

Re-examining these images, I noticed something fascinating. The Okawara artwork there for the SoulGunner and SoulLancer are similar to their final CG models, but they're not the same. The final CG models are slightly modified. But, the SoulGunner's CG model is nearly identical to the Impulse 7's CG model, and the SoulLancer's CG model is nearly identical to the CloudSaviour's CG model. There a couple of modifications in each case, namely the heads and weapons, but... I think it's safe to say that the Okawara artwork for the SoulGunner IS an Impulse Flying Trooper and the SoullLncer IS a Cloudsaviour Flying Trooper.

Well, it's Proxy. A Brazilian subber who isn't exactly known for great work. He's on record stating that he knows neither English nor Japanese very well, he's engaged in MTL (for EN->PT-BR) before, and he's also just kind of an idiot in general, judging from the few interactions I've had with him.

the Hikarian book you mention is unfortunately (and hilariously) out of print, and the last one that sold went for $140+ in a Yahoo auction some time ago. Most other sites have it listed as sold out, and as it seemed to have received little circulation somehow, I don't think I'll be able to source this one. If I did, the book would easily be over $100, so some chip-in would have been nice if I did find it proper.

-Makoto's book is accessible and I will bid on a copy as all of them are only 2000 yen a piece. Nobody seems to be camping on them, so I'll grab it. I have some very early Makoto work for the BARTOLOMEO ONE series and even had a conversation with him personally about it:

This one is called "機甲創世記モスピーダコンプリートアートワークス". Its pretty hard to get these days and most Ebay fags are trying to shill it for $200 USD plus (lol, lmao). Its on Amazon JP for $50, hardly a copy on Mercari or Yahoo at the moment that hasn't been sold. If I look into this later, I can get this or anyone could via a proxy like Japan Rabbit or Neokyo.

Shipping would probably be another $20 if not consolidated with others. I feel this may be on Rakuten eventually or PayPay, I'll have to bookmark it.

Definitely worth an investment, nobody has archived this one.

The lighting on Sara throughout this entire scene has been changed to be far brighter and warmer, which I actually think makes a lot of sense considering what's happening.

They're low, but it wouldn't be the first show to get a new BD with a new master. Dancougar got one, 0083 at least got a re-release that fixed some issues with the old release, various movies and some TV shows (like Cardcaptor Sakura) have gotten new scans for 4K releases. It's not entirely out of the question that they want to cash in on old Gundam shows again with something like this. And as long as it's a modern scan, I wouldn't even care if it's a 2K scan blown up to 4K. It'd easily beat the current one.

In the scene, a 'remux' refers to anything that is simply the original untouched video from the source (BD, DVD, LD, WEB, w/e) muxed into a new container format, usually mkv. Hence, 'remux'. There's no encoding going on in a remux.
An 'encode' is when you take the original video and compress it to save space at the cost of quality. Space saved and quality lost depends on the encoding settings. A good encoder will also filter (as needed).
A 'reencode' is when someone takes the aforementioned encode and encodes it AGAIN. This is almost never recommended because it's effectively taking a photo of a photo. It's usually done by groups aiming to make ultra-small filesizes for their shitty 2009 phones (and thus called 'miniencodes'), and the result is always abysmal. -Most- things on Nyaa that are flagged red are reencodes, and should be avoided.

To actually answer your first question here, while I've not done a comparison on it yet, like Darkonius said the linked comparison is representative of what to expect. The DVD encodes weren't as good as that. If you absolutely need to you could watch the Bunny Hat or Shiniori encodes; Shiniori's generally a subpar group but it'll probably still look better than the DVDs, and Bunny Hat's release is presumably a strict upgrade from their DVD release (which is the best DVD release currently available).

Is red always an indicator of bad? Getting strapped for space and supposedly the hchcsen remux of Gundam X (222GB!) or the BD raw (a "mere" 83GB) with the official (albeit external) subtitles are the best. As for Gundam X, I watched the 83GB RAWs back when the remux didn't exist yet. It's a good option if you don't have space for the remux. Avoid sxales and Xerblade at all cost. The 6.8GB are your signal that it's terrible, really terrible. You can't cram all the visual information of a grainy 1080p film scan into 150MB per episode. It's apparent that XerBlade had no idea of how cel anime and film scans work, otherwise he wouldn't have called the BD an "upscale" (it's a downscale from the film scan, done at at least 2K (2048x1556), and the original film has no native resolution anyway, just a diminishing detail to grain ratio) and acted so exasperated at a remux being, in fact, very large.

So, I have 40 timed Dragonar subs for the BD rips. They work with both Moozzi2 and QTS. The first 13 are a bit clunky because I didn't modified them at all, they already sorta worked with the current GARlock subs. The rest were all timed line-by-line by myself. I kinda wish someone else could take over the remaining 8 episodes because I never watched this show before and did this just because I was tired of waiting for a decent quality release since the Italian rips looked awful. I would be glad to at least be able to watch the ending arc properly.

You've also labelled that as Naka and Shita even though it's actually Chuu and Ge (and you can see this in the furigana on the credits page); Naka and Shita are used for slightly different contexts.

Interesting, I wasn't aware there was accompanying material. Dual Magazines are 100 page Mooks with a wargame included, but info is kind of scarce on ephemera. Ordered a bunch of the full issues off Mandarake last week regardless.

Where are higher quality rips of the Tetsujin manga? Because I swear they did exist & I even had them at one point!

Is Re: Cutie Honey one of those early digital anime that suffer an originally animated in 360p or 480p curse and that's why all the releases look off? Every release I've looked at looks weird and like it has upscaling artifacts. Or is it because the aspect ratio is strangely wide? Or both?

Suikoden was done Apr '24. Typesetter just bought the Okami raws in autumn and I worked on Okami+final 4 chapters of Sally the Witch when the typesetter could not afford to commission translators so I volunteered to get that last stretch done.

Okami's moved to another website from what I understand. Okami itself has legal issues with Hakuro Kohinata's estate, it's why it hasn't been reprinted since 2004.

The ongoing Kindle rereleases of various Yokoyama manga just added his early 70's super robot manga サンダー大王, & this new edition features most of the covers & color pages left out of previous prints.

Of course, Japanese Kindle is locked behind you-need-to-physically-live-in-Japan-full-time-with-a-phone-number-&-address-&-everything region locking, but if it weren't for that fact I'd feel pretty stupid about having just bought one of those older prints which I'm gonna scan sooner than later.

Was unaware, that's unfortunate but ultimately inevitable with fansites like that. It's on Web Archive, so it can still be browsed and a copy saved thankfully.
