The 80s OVAs are great, don't listen to anyone who says otherwise. Everyone who says Big Battle is bad didn't actually watch it.
OP here. So far I'm enjoying it a lot. I like the fact that it seems it was targeted towards a more mature audience.

>>23257815 (OP)The first 10-15 episodes are good. I don't remember anymore much of it.
Then the story gets downhill crap.
Anything the main character progressed in the first part of the story, gets kinda of a reset, and it is a cycle of repeat the same stuff.
To think Votoms inspired this shitty gay anime.

>the first three>The Last Red Shoulder, Big Battle, Seed of AmbitionThey're absolutely fine, Big Battle felt like a regular multi-parter, and the prequel ones were very enjoyable. Haven't seen Mellowlink yet
>didn't like Pailsen Files (which came out after Shining Heresy)I don't agree with some people saying it was the best one, but maybe it's because of the 2000s artstyle and CGI.
>>23265403>doesn't remember much more of it but knows it gets worse>thinks Chirico regressed
>>23265403I like Votoms but I dropped the show around the time they got to the jungles of space Vietnam. The first arc ended well and then it got repetitive
>>23265457>dropping the best arcwhat is this bait
Finished the OG series today, it was pretty good. I knew the ending but there were still lots of surprises along the way. I had seen Uodoo a while back and I got the impression it was written on the same level as Clone Wars, but the future episodes were very good. Rochina was a cool character. I'm glad I watched it; it was consistently interesting and engaging and a lot deeper than I thought it would be. I wish there was a bit more time on Quent, but oh well.
Such a cozy show. Is there anything in the same vein when it comes to atmosphere? I've already checked out Gasaraki, which has satiated my need for the quiet buzz of machines.
VOTOMS threads generally reveal how little interest people have in wider mecha based on how early they drop it or how they think "you only need to watch this part" when you need to watch all of it.
>>23265669For a hobby board /m/ sure hates engaging with it.
>>23265346Merowlink has several filler episodes. This is unacceptable in a 12-episode series.
I finished episode 12 and I hope there are more variety of mecha and not just this one. So far I'm enjoying the show a lot.
>>23265457Man, then you dodged a bullet because the third arc (Sunsa) is even worse. First is PTSD Ship, then 6~7 episodes of nothing but SAND and Chrico being pursued by a fat girl while slowly dying from dehydration.
I'm not kidding, that's what happens. It gets better in the final arc (Quent), but boy does Sunsa fucking suck.
>>23267697There is a clear evolution line of machines as the series advances towards the end, but most of them are variants of the Scopedog.
>>23265663>People talking: The AnimeI like a lot of aspects of Gasaraki but goddamn if it wasn't gigaboring most of the time. For most of the episodes all I was thinking while watching was "can I see some fucking robots, please?"
But then again I'm more of a super robot kind of guy, so maybe it's really good for those who enjoy real robot more.
>>23265669Some shows are just kind of boring. Try sit through Argento Soma and see if it doesn't put you to sleep despite the interesting ideas
>>23265424Source? I don't believe it.
>>23267980Military shows are just not for you.
>>23268029>Argento SomaI can save myself the trouble because I can tell that's something just not for me. Too many fucking people do that on this board, they watch things they're not actually interested in, hence why there's constant fucking "where do I start" and "what parts do I watch" threads.
I should give Votoms another try. I usually need some special type of state to watch older shows because ngl they're a bit way too slow for my liking. I got to the point where Chirroco and the crew find the diamonds but can't really remember the context and stuff. I'm just waiting to see if it'll start to have a flow soon or if it's just Chirroco just bouncing between areas until the end.
>>23267697Once you hit the Kummen arc in like 2 episodes, you'll see more variety in Mecha. This isn't Gundam though, so don't expect crazy shit to just pop up out of nowhere.
>>23269399you talk too much. Votoms TV is objectively long and objectively has lots of reused animation. Mellowlink is more entertaining

>>23271575Bro you don't own Votoms. I actually liked the Uoodo arc , the OVAs, and the games, and Galient and Layzner are some of my favorite anime. It's just the scopedog combat in the original show that is cool at first then gets boring by the 50th time it uses the skates/spikes/punch gimmicks. It's just gratuitous violence that goes on a little too long with very little meaningful dialogue or narration. Like Rambo first blood part 2 or something similar. >>23269758>People talking: The AnimeThat's how Takahashi does things. There's a whole episode in Fang of the Sun where the central plot is a government administrator trying to work out agricultural reform between poor sharecroppers and rich landlords while the guerillas try and figure out how to get guns from Earth. I swear the only reason he included mecha fights every episode was because he was contractually obligated to by the merchandising sponsors.
>>23275766The best episodes of Dougram are when it's only people talking, I completely lost interest when Crinn and the Dougram are the focus.
I Rewatched this in bluray this year, the jungle arc is fucking maybe the best idea in anime ever created. I fucking loved the music and vibe. I wish that part went on like that. I thought the rest of the show was fine but rushed, maybe? I just like mercenary plots, and it's super rare as a theme. But I really wish they would have bought up that he was the last red shoulder more. But overall, it's aged extremely well.
>>23277011Rare good post.
Given the scope of Votoms' setting, what stories would you like to see?
>>23275766>the only reason he included mecha fights every episode was because he was contractually obligated to by the merchandising sponsorsIt's super obvious when that happens too lol. The episode will either open or close with a literally 3 minute ambush that has nothing to do with the rest of the episode and is clearly only there because it has to be.
>>23277688The constant battles would have felt less egregious if they weren't so lopsided in favor of the Dougram. I'll say this about the (never to be finished) GET TRUTH, at least the fights feel like Crinn survives by the skin of his teeth.
>>23277704The meaningful fights that actually serve plot purposes are. The random filler fights really are just there because he was contractually required to include a fight every episode. Anon's hunch wasn't wrong. There's 75 episodes, so that's a lot of chaff.

>>23269615You're completely right. VOTOMS is set in a cool universe with cool designs but chirico and the jijirium conspiracy aren't interesting enough to carry the whole show. Quant was the only arc that didn't feel dragged out, but it was a completely different type of sci-fi from the rest of the show and I'm sure plenty of people didn't like it because of that. Speds don't want to hear that old cartoons aren't perfect pieces of high art though.

None of this Robocop shit matters to a Japanese show like Votoms because they let their kids see much worse things. There was nothing wrong with Ideon being the show it was while Aoshima was also hocking a goofy model kit that could pop capsule toys out its vagina. >>23293293Yes, because he's the MC and he's just made of sterner stuff thanks to everything he's gone through. But I assume also latent Overman evolution plays a role in why he's recovering from the crazier injuries, especially during the back half of the show.

>>23362130Great scan.
Does anyone have a working set of Japanese subtitles for the original show? The ones at kitsunekko either don't seem to work or aren't timed correctly.
fucks me up that there will never ever be more votoms
>>23367890Have you read the text-only sequel to Shining Heresy and Phantom Arc anon
>>23257815 (OP)The people saying it gets better in this thread are weird. I thoroughly enjoyed the first couple arcs, 3rd was boring and 4th was just plain fucking stupid, took me months to get through and I finally finished this week. Total shift from a war focus to a silly plot about a fake god. Also Fyana is annoying as shit I hope I never have to hear her scream CHIRICO again in my life.
>>23369305Those last two arcs are a test as to who is a real fan or not.
>>23367972i didn't enjoy shining heresy :(
It's his birthday today, say something nice.
>>23372321I refuse to say anything nice about him.

>>23369690I have mixed feelings about it too, but don't you want to know how it ends? Like, if he was brought back for more of a nightmare, you'd at least hope that it works out for him in the end, right
>>23372321He's doing his best and I hope he is able to get some rest
>>23372924This, but hoping he suffers more.
>>23372953This is one of the meanest things I've ever read on this website, what did that poor man ever do to you? Chirico is a friend

Finally finished Mellowlink yesterday. Which means I've watched all the OVAs.
>>23372979Because Chirico killed my grandma, okay?
>>23373263Congrats on finishing the OVAs.
>>23336790It was meh, TV was slow as hell at times but the Movie version unironically cuts too much fat.
In the grand scheme of things it's a good piece of media because it covers some interesting part of Chirico's life and answers some questions like where the fuck Rochina even came from, on the other hand it feels kinda forced at times and it has the usual pacing problems despite some great episodes here and there.
Pailsen's side of the story for instance could have been executed better imo, the entire detainment and torture section feel silly in hindisght considering how that whole plot point ends, Chirico and his old bros take a hell of a lot of time to actually warm up to each other and then it all ends immediately when they finally do, which I guess it's sorta the point of the drama but it feels kinda silly all the same, especially considering what happens in the last episode.
tl:dr; it's firmly mid-tier when it comes to side material, above Big Battle, Case Irvine and Finder at least.
>>23377521You didn't like Big Battle? Felt like a natural two-parter that took place during the show.
>>23350478It's sad we don't have a high definition version of Pilsen Files.
>>23379777The best they could do with it is some kind of digital upscale like other early digital anime.
>>23378140Not him, but Big Battle just felt like unspectacular filler, and also just used Fyana as a damsel rather than as a character.
>>23380199Ok that's completely fair, I thought it was still harmless, although I do agree about Fyana.
Also I somehow misinterpreted your ranking as dislike, rather than just a humble ranking. Haven't seen the non-Chirico OVAs yet, but here's my shitty ranking.
Show >> Origin of Ambition >> Last Red Shoulder > Pailsen Files = Big Battle > Alone Again > Phantom Arc > Shining Heresy
Without a rewatch, I really can't get the stain of "why did they continue the story" out of my head, so this ranking is fully and completely biased. Big Battle probably should be about as low as you ranked it in terms of quality, since being harmless and inoffensive aren't actual positive qualities and certainly not strong ones.
>>23378140It's not that Big Battle is bad, it has good fights, the animation and direction is good, Niva was a neat antagonist and all that, it's just that it's a super minor action flick with little bearing on anything regarding the bigger picture.
Roots of Ambition and Last Red Shoulder for instance have a stronger connection to the main series, the cast has a strong emotional connection to Chirico and the overall story with Pailsen, there's none of that in Big Battle, it's "just" a good action flick with some really cool cuts.
>>23380371That's fair enough, I misunderstood what anon meant in his ranking system, and the heartbreak of the post-show OVAs was so strong that "unimportant and inoffensive filler" was strongly endearing in comparison to the mixed feelings I have about Shining Heresy and on.
>>23288163Rah is EVA if EVA had an ending that wasn't Anno zipping open his pants and pissing on his audience. Argento Soma is astronauts, with the only real EVA link being that the robots in the show are puppetered ayylmao bodies.
>>23380199More of you fucking cunts need to untrain your instant dismissal of "filler".
>>23380443>pissing on his audienceRetard.
>>23380951reminds me of how VOTOMS was a Brave at one point.

Thinking of watching Dougram. Are there usable subtitles out there?

>got it super cheap alongside a trio pack of Scopedog Customs from a guy who was offloading his entire collection of this range (inc. the diorama ones and transporter) he never even opened
>look up current prices for the other packs

Would've bought the lot if I wasn't fucking unemployed at the time, fuck's sake
>>23267980What's the appeal of super robot shows? Not trying to shit on anyone but they mostly seem like the kind of monster-of-the-week shows I'd watch when I was 9
>>23398069Depends on what we're even talking about
"Super Robot" is a term that means a million different things, but I'll say at the bare minimum there tends to be a lot more variety than just standard Gundam/Macross esque war stories
Sure, "Real Robots" have weird outliers like VOTOMS and Xabungle, but "Super Robot" has no standard template to begin with unless we're talking about strictly the 1970s in which case there's a lot of Mazinger ripoffs. But starting from the 80s super robot meant everything from "elementary schoolers going on isekai adventures" (Wataru) to "A team of hitmen uncover an Egyptian conspiracy to blow up Jupiter" (Braiger) to "an alien princess comes to Earth in order find a group of ninjas to rescue her from the rebel army" (Tobikage) to Transformers
>>23398205Real vs Super doesn't even say much about the story content either. Dougram is much more similar to Baxingar or even Daimos than it is to Votoms, its immediate successor. Frankly I'm surprised at how dull Gasaraki is when Takahashi also made this douchebag making a few phone calls the most terrifying thing in Dougram.
