For the same reason shoulder cannons are cool, and on top of having shoulder cannons, wrist-mounted grenade launchers, and a sexy paint job, this bad boy can hover. This is what all mecha should strive to be.

It only really makes sense if you have a wrist mounted beam gun/cannon with an emergency beam saber option. You lose a lot of the flexibility of a beam saber by making it a mounted weapon.

How, you can surprise stab, and still slash-with longer range since it's pointing completely straight vs straight held in a hand.

Better angle with wrist control rather than having to move the entire arm. You also can't do the hand spin attack that the Heavy gun is shown doing in f91. For an ace or high performance suit the Wrist mounted saber can just be upgraded to a beam gun/cannon with a saber feature but command might not care to give grunts a feature like that even if it might occasionally get a surprise kill. Though some mobile suits have beam sabers store in their wrist so they probably think that's good enough.

Try taping a fork and spoon to each of your wrists and then try to feed yourself, that's the kind of flexibility you lose with wrist-mounted saber. Granted, it doesn't matter for like 90% of beam saber combat and usage, but often it's the missing 10% that allows for fancy movements and stuff that is more interesting than a basic "swing arm to attack".

There's nothing wrong with a wrist saber as long as it doubles as a regular saber, that's what the Sinanju and Unicorns do. I can't remember if the Sinanju emits the saber blade directly from the wrist in the animation, but it's definitely a thing in a bunch of the games.

Beam Sabers were like one and dones IIRC in the original MSG. They could run out of power and have to be refueled. You could argue that's why they were in the wrists at first. Maybe it'd draw too much power from the robutt.

I could see both versions being based on different tech already seen in the series, the machine gun potentially being based on the one used by the Alex having a rate of fire comparable to the Alex but faster using a single barrel while the beam Gatling would later be used as one of the weapons used by the unicorn though much more versatile

At the same time, you rely on and strain the wrist less, and can put as much raw torque into the attacks as into the elbow strikes.
It was also a bad move on Sinanju side here, because it wouldn't work were the machines equally matched in physical power, it would be awful if there was backup to shoot it down while it was being forced to struggle stationary, and it would've been wrecked were the opponent a bit more mindful.

Other way around. Wrist mounted guns IRL are impossible to use. While we have mecha, this still applies and is primarily a function of how you have to aim them being incredibly different. Remember, a wrist mounted weapon is not a turret, and the arm has to deal with recoil being off center and unbalanced, and any error makes you miss your spray of bullets. You can fix this with training or computers to approximate the recoil, but very very pointless. Shoulder guns are superior from a mechanical standpoint. Swords do not matter. That being said, it is cool.

There is a lot of comments on here that seem ill informed. many of these are not wrist mounted but forearm mounted. (Not saying this to say they don’t belong here) if you are going to get into a sci-fi argument about something not working at least approach it from the correct angle. some of these seem to overlap onto the wrist but they aren’t connected to it. They are mounted to the forearm. So the energy weapons or lasers or whatever they shoot would send the shock into the forearm. if you approached this from an anatomical perspective the force would probably be absorbed by your bicep and shoulder blade stabilizer muscles and your lats. So if these were on a giant humanoid robot that is probably where some of the force would need to be stabilized. Again being a cartoon, this is all just my baseless speculation.

When people hurt their wrist they are usually talking about the joint and these are all positioned above that.

You mean Unicorn's Jesta? Most official media calls it a beam rifle, not a carbine. It's considered an extended or advanced version of the Jegan's beam rifle. The gunpla manuals, the official japanese website (the profile for the jesta cannon), UC 0096 Mechanic book, as well as other databooks all call it a beam rifle. Carbine might have come from an early magazine or something. Even the novel just calls them rifles iirc.

It's essentially a GP01fb. They have similar specs and they serve the same role as a space superiority fighter. Difference is the GP01fb was redesigned to be a little more versatile because the GP01 got totaled, so they went and replaced everything instead of just equipping it with its space-use parts.
