I didn't think Arc was capable of an episode that good. Why is it that New Gen shows are always at their best when they're focusing on anything other than the main cast?
>>23298814Have you just reached that episode or have you finished the series? There are a couple of strong team/MC focused episodes later on.
Otherwise, yeah, many stand-out episodes are one-offs. A lot of those seem to be thanks to Nakano's writing. Ginga S Ep.11, X Ep.9, Orb Ep.9, Decker Ep.20, Blazar Ep.15, Arc Ep.21.
Ashiki, who wrote To My Distant Friend also wrote the Blazar insurance guy episode.

Hey I have a weird question that I'm hoping you guys can answer
I want an Ultraman or Shin Ultraman figure around 10-13 cm in height. Can be articulated or fixed pose: If fixed pose then a fighting pose would be ideal.
Any suggestions on what I should be looking for? I'm guessing a shokugan line would probably be perfect but I'm not sure which one.
Man, I've never watched 80 and yet the 80 Tribute in Mebius still got me crying
>>23300710The mismatched boot just looks ridiculous.
>>23300690>shokuganYou're looking for Chodo, 10cm articulated figures. I haven't been following it so i don't know which wave had them.

>>23304402Don't know why the colors look like that.
>>23304405Same.
The MeteoKaiju ones have their own shapes.
>>23304563seems like he'll be the first kaiju of the series
>>23303698its a shame really, I liked Titas more. Cheerful while having a 'dark' past; traitor blood.
Also the fact its not a full season like gaia, having three ultra is too much to give screentime to three.
>>23304405They already did for Taiga
>>23304405There's the problem, though. While I get you could just place the color timers on the inside of the gem on each Meteo, maybe it would be too hard to recognize for children, especially in regards to similar-shaped timers between Ultraman and Jack (Zoffy's kinda easy with the badges lining around his chest). So they chose rise poses instead.
On a different note, any guess to how Bandai will distribute further armors for Omega across the later waves? My guess is that they could be pack-ins with the other Meteokaiju figures (Valgeness Armor would be obtained with Valgeness for both role-play and figure play fun, and it could follow suit with hopefully a turtle-based kaiju we'd see in the third wave).
>>23304407>Seven Family without Leo
>>23304992But who is the mom?
>>23304902That's something I've noticed Ultra has kind of lacked compared to other long running toku franchises. Ultras generally don't have an identifying, unique symbol that can be recognized at a glance. Sure you have things like the symbols on Leo and Astra's abdomens or even in some cases more unique color timer shapes like Z's, but there's never been anything that you could definitely call, say, the emblem of the original Ultraman. Compare to Gorenger's 5 with the line of stars or the Tachibana Racing logo for the original Kamen Riders.
>>23305033Oftentimes, the SSSP logo is seen as Ultraman's symbol logo. Though it isn't as obvious as the ever-defining 5 of the Gorengers or the Tachibana Racing logo of the original Kamen Rider, and they have alternatives in the form of the V of Super Sentai and #1's helmet for Kamen Rider used since the start of the Reiwa era.
>>23305033Even for them it can't be just the logos for legacy collectibles, they still need to show the mask/face because those are the most notable part of the characters.
There was one time Bandai sold Legend Rider Gaia Memories with the Rider logos on display, but the previous release and every legacy items after always have to show the mask for most of the time.
I think only Geats who can get away with only showing the belts for the Legend Rider Buckles.
So I assume after Omega we're gonna go back to Ultra's having a ton of forms and barely any new kaiju?
>>23305393Assume whatever you want. We don't know anything.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fj8kwtE2iW4
15 sec CM.
>>23305393It's pretty clear they don't want to do that anymore. Bandai could force their hands, but Sentai not getting many sales from the past hero gimmicks might be used as an argument to stay in this course.
I'm actually disappointed though. I thought modern Ultraman used to have the perfect balance between new shows while keeping past series relevant, but now it feels more like a generic tokusatsu structure like you get from Toei.
>>23305711I have no idea what you're talking about
>>23305711The best Ultraman shows have pretty much all been standalone except Mebius and Dyna, and even Dyna kept the callbacks to a minimum despite being a direct sequel.
Frankly I don't think the new hero using cards/capsules/etc with a jpeg of an older Ultra on them to transform is "keeping past series relevant" in any meaningful sense regardless.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ix4KH14fypo
>>23305738>Frankly I don't think the new hero using cards/capsules/etc with a jpeg of an older Ultra on them to transform is "keeping past series relevant" in any meaningful sense regardless.Alongside that they used to have appearances or references to events of past Ultras. It all felt like everything was tied together while also still allowing each show to stand on its own.
What you're describing is more like how Sentai is handling things, with 3 recent seasons (Zenkaiger, Donbrothers, Gozyuger) having Sentai collectibles while having no real connections to past seasons at all.

>>23305859Is this actually a new mini series or a clip show like that one with Z?

>>23306250They needed to be wed in holy matrimony first.
>>23306225Read the full title anon, it's an episode of the clipshow, about episode 3 of the web series from 5 years ago.
>>23306318All the titles for this stuff is so confusing I get lost but yeah I could have clicked it
I don't care if this is a hot take, but Z feels like its only as big as it is due to airing at the perfect timing, as otherwise the show itself is just kinda mid compare to other Ultra shows
>>23306386it's a hot take for a reason. would go as far as to say it's a shit take entirely
>>23306386While one can't deny Z being released during the time people were trapped at home helped it, it's still a fun series as a whole. The fun ensemble helps elevated it
>>23306393my ultimate problem with Z is that as I watching the show, I kept asking "what is this show about?"
Like it has all these disparate elements of Z being Zero's protege, the Ultra-host dynamic of Z and Haruki, the return of Juggler, the continued presence of Belial power with the Devil Splinters etc, but like what's the thing that even connects all of this stuff together, what is the thematic message that the show is going for?
The show frankly doesn't really present one until the finale, where it talks about the nature and use of power. And to be fair, I do like that message and I think it does connect all those elements together. However prior Ultra shows had much stronger presence and exploration of their overarching message compared to Z.
Happy 42nd birthday, Zero.
>>23306510>whats the show aboutthe show is about Z.it's about his growth. it's in the name. why are you overanalyzing an ultraman show? first time watching self-contained episodes? if you REALLY wanna know why zero, juggler, geed, belial, etc. are in this show, it's because Ultraman Z is part of the ultra universe. Recurring characters show up. it's not about purpose or plotlines. they are simply there because they all live in the same world. A more realistic answer is that it's a Zero celebration show, and it wants to sell toys. there's no thematic message. Ultraman's messages are at the end of the episodes. It's an episodic show. each episode has a lesson to tell. Do you really need an overarching message for a show to be good? showa kino never bothered with any of that.
>>23306564I'm comparing this directly to the the prior three Ultra shows: Geed, R/B and Taiga. Geed focuses on Geed being the son of Belial, R/B focuses on its family dynamic and Taiga is about its "aliens living amongst humans" settings. These are core ideas that the whole show is focused on, and almost every episode, self-contained or otherwise, is exploring some facet of that idea. Z has a good core idea with its examination of power, but it isn't something that the show really emphasizes much until the very end.
>>23306550I'm not up to date with Zero lore. Has he ever had a host?
>>23306747>a hostHe had 3. The first one is from his second movie, the second one is from his third movie, the last one is from Geed.
>>23306564> the show is about ZThe show is about Haruki. Z is oddly quiet and subdued compared to how he is in every side special
>>23306386I wanted to like Z a lot more than I did
It had a lot of things going for it. Chant My Name, the return of a proper Ultraman defense force team, the fact that said team was using classic robot kaiju to fight instead of just sci-fi jets, the stylish outfits, the return of Juggler and Greeza, Taguchi directing, etc
But the characters and writing held it back hard. Haruki was a nothing protagonist, Z talking also contributed practically nothing, Celebro barely had any lines, even Juggler was so much less interesting and fun than he was in Orb
I don't really care about whether or not it has an overarcing theme, I just want to be entertained. And the show had potential to be entertaining, but all the moments that could have been great just weren't because the bland cast wasn't able to give these moments the life they needed
It's better than X at least, but that's not a high bar.
>>23304563Big nosed fucko
>>23306564>the show is about Z.it's about his growth. it's in the name.I really like the show, but that is just a straight-up lie. Z-san never had a single focus episode just about him, and he is only there to give Haruki power-ups and expositions. Granted, this is not inherently a bad thing, seeing as early Heisei shows like TDG have the Ultras be completely silent while the host borrows their powers to fight as one. That being said, Z-san is overshadowed by the rest of the cast in development because he has hardly established any change in character past the first episode. Yet the side specials portray him as someone entirely different.
Excuse me, best battle OST coming through.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nL3t2wjJ0c
>>23307127what are you talking about? the whole show we see Z learn from Haruki and slowly fights better. That's why he fights in base form in the last episode. We also got great focus eps like with Ace which probably the best one.
>>23307127I feel like Z's character was already mostly untouched because with his character, he was "there" in terms of a hero character.
His will to fight and defend against evil is there, he's just lacking in fighting ability and confidence. The fusion was a clutch for him to learn to fight and also to get stronger, hence why in the last episode when he was reduced to his base form he exhibited moves that would have previously required him to use the fusions, like the rapid hand-to-hand of Alpha Edge, the sheer strength of Beta Smash, and the energy manipulation of Gamma Future, he did all of those in the final fight in his base form.
>>23306762technically he's had 3 more. Ultraman Premier 2011 introduced Shin Moroboshi which is meant to be a random human that Zero fused with and renamed like Dark Zagi did, who had 3 identities
>Raito, played by Mamoru Miyano>George Ikaruga>and some unnamed guy who was played by Naoki Kawano, the actor who played Long in Gekiranger
>>23308537I thought all of those three actors are meant to be Shin Moroboshi, just performed on different locations.
>>23308594there's a bit of misinfo. they're techincally all Shin but it's a whole Dark Zagi thing where they hijack the body and rename themselves than say, make a human form like Dan and Mirai did.

>>23319112Yeah, because an exploration about a caveman Ultra in an isolated universe is done to death. Typical denying Blazarfag
>>23319057because ultimately, in context of Blazar themes, that doesn't matter. Just like how Gento has put his full trust behind Blazar despite still knowing next to nothing about him, Skard has already put their full trust in Blazar despite not knowing that he's their captain. They already know Blazar is a reliable ally based on his past actions and behavior, the specific knowledge of his identity is not necessary.
Blazar is one of those shows where it needs either more episodes or a second season to further explore it's themes, settings and characters
>>23319316You could say that with most of the New Gen shows. Orb was the luckiest one to get so many supplementary specials and I had hoped they would have done the same for Blazar beyond a comic that gives us nothing besides a typical defense force adventure. >Why Space People Come to Earth to Study>According to space standards, the Earth civilization possesses a very high level of culture and art. >Space people cannot understand the concept of โlove for neighbors,โ โlove for the world,โ or โlove for the nation.โ >Since they cannot understand why intelligent and strong people on Earth do not try to destroy the weak, and why some would even sacrifice themselves for love, they want to learn such qualities from Earthlings.>This is considered one of the reasons for their visit.Although to be fair this could be the plot for an Ultraman episode.

I honestly don't understand the point of begging for more episodes, the production can barely handle 25 episodes yearly, asking for more is literally just begging to make the shows to be shittier.
>>23323235More space to develop things? It's not like many want 50 ish episode these days. At most, reaching 30s.
>>23323422honestly this problem is easily solved with better planning and writing. increasing the episode doesnt guarantee better development. show like decker, Z, Orb, all have the same 25 episode count and they still manage to flesh out enough things.

Iโm gonna laugh so hard if Rekiness ends up being a better Earth Garon than Earth Garon ever was.
>>23326247That's a low bar. Even Sevenger which was generally played for laughs had more solid moments than Earth Garon.
>>23325534It's had a huge presence there for years.

>>23326284Sevenger had atleast 3 kills to its name
>>23298934I've finished the series now
I disagree, the only standout episode where the cast wasn't taking a back seat to something else was Goodbye, Rin
But regardless of the bland cast, I do think Arc is probably the third best new gen show after Orb and Blazar. Granted that's not a high bar, but I really did appreciate how visually experimental the show was, the OST was surprisingly killer despite the lame OP (https://youtu.be/iMdyyaoaUMU), and the scenario writing was a whole lot closer to what I watch Ultra for than we've gotten in most new gen shows. They're getting their footing. If they can preserve this foundation for Omega, and just have better characters, it'll a contender for my top 10.
>>23325534They're both sons of Tsuburaya.

I have not watched Ultraman since Tiga, can a guy just jump in again with the new series or is there a required watch list?
>>23329722Not really. At least nothing you can't overcome with a trip to the wikis
>>23329722There's no point in watching the new series when pretty much everything between Tiga and Ginga is better than everything after
>>23329753That really sounds like some bias there, can you elaborate more? Info dump me.
>>23329802Nah, it's actually a pretty common opinion, practically consensus I would say
1996-2006 was the peak of how much money Tsuburaya spent producing Ultra shows, to the point where they went bankrupt after putting out Mebius and had to be purchased by Bandai, at which point the shows IMMEDIATELY started getting much more toyetic and cheap, with almost everything since then having lengthy stock footage shots of transformation scenes , a bunch of kaiju suits being reused over and over across seasons, Ultras getting like 5 new forms every series for even more transformation stock footage, etc
They've only just started to dial this trend back with Blazar and Arc, which are pretty good show. But even then, I don't think either of them ever really got as imaginative as shows like Tiga, Dyna, Cosmos and Nexus (ironically despite Arc's whole theme being imagination). And you know, that's what I watch Ultra for, the cerebral and bizarre episodes about mysterious sci-fi phenomena. A lot of the new stuff just feels like capeshit trying to emulate the Marvel movie model
>>23329883Doesn't japan tie a series to their toy sales normally though? I'm asking as I'm not sure myself, but given the amount of merch I see for any given Toku series I'm going on an assumption. It sorta makes sense that they just want to try and get the kids/collectors of whatever age and use shows as that medium.
Beyond the MoTW formula are the stories atleast somewhat enjoyable past Ginga?
>>23329907honestly yes. A lot of New Gen shows have good writing, good characters, and good action.
>>23329917Cool, good enough for me. I'll backtrack and watch Arc in my downtime and the new one when that drops next month and jump about from there.
>>23329925Arc is honestly underrated. It has a bland cast for the most part, but the stories, monsters, action, and main plot are all pretty good.
>>23329907>Doesn't japan tie a series to their toy sales normally though?Really, it's more "Bandai" then Japan. What he's talking about is exactly that Tsuburuya went from independent to owned by Bandai, and so in this transition to toy push became stronger and more obvious in the shows themselves.
>>23329925nice choice. Arc is pretty good.
>>23329907Well Ginga itself sucks, I wasn't being inclusive when I said "between Tiga and Ginga" since I knew you'd already seen Tiga
The only shows from Ginga on (commonly referred to as the "New Generation era since it started in Heisei and continues into Reiwa) that I'd say aren't skippable are Orb, Z and Blazar. I do like Arc quite a bit more than Z, but Z is trying to do more interesting things than Arc overall I'd say, and if you're considering Arc, again, I think you should just go back and watch Dyna and Cosmos instead. Everything Arc tries those older Heisei shows have already done better (with the exception of the fight choreography and special effects, because damn, Arc really kinda went all out with it)
>>23329984>Blazar isn't skippable It's an isolated series. Even the Arc tie ins don't dwell into it too much
>>23330058Yes, it's the first isolated series in two fucking decades, which is part of why it isn't skippable
It's nice to see a new gen show have the balls to not have any cameos or even any implication of the existence of other Ultramen
If you're watching Ultraman for the continuity, what the fuck are you doing, my man?
>>23330073It's isolated so you can skip it and watch it later on
It ain't about continuity, it's just fun to see. Don't pretend that wasn't the case in Showa starting from Jack. Team ups are in the veins of Ultra, hence the brotherhood theme. Pushing it away it's just being pompous for no reason
>>23330082>Don't pretend that wasn't the case in Showa starting from JackWhich is partially why Jack onwards was the worst part of the Showa era (though I'll grant that Leo was good specifically because of the relationship between Ultraseven and Leo in that show, but that's not really what New Gen is doing)
Pretty much all of the best Ultra shows are standalone, the only real exception is Mebius and even Mebius is still really good without the parts that reference prior shows.
>>23330106>Jack the worst part of ShowaYou're so wrong it hurts
And you contradict your statement since you also mentioned Z as non skippable, a series that involves three other series
Honestly, skip whatever you want and watch what you like, anon
>>23329907The best philosophy, look at the design and maybe some clips on YouTube. There's a guy who made Ultraman Out of Context video. That could be helpful
>>23330125Jack onwards, faggot, unless you're going to claim that somehow Ultraseven is worse than what came after it
I know that Ace is worse than Jack, most people know. And guess what? Ace laid the cameos on thicker than Jack
Anyway, this isn't a self-contradiction because I did actually mention that I don't like Z that much, and the pointless shoehorning of Zero into yet another series is part of that. I'm grateful Z was the last time, at least. But it's more interesting than something like Arc overall. Cameos don't make me automatically hate a show, I never said that. I mentioned I thought Mebius was good in my previous post.
It's just better when they leave out the multiverse crap, cut the toy shilling, and attempt some actual depth or intrigue
>>23330150That still includes Jack and I will say the series may not be as good as the previous two, but it was still a good show. Funny enough, it pioneered the senpai passing power concept with Ultra Lance
You talk about intrigue and depth and you suggested Blazar, a show that barely has any of that. Orb did and it basically kicked off the Senpai power trend even more than Ginga and X did
>>23330163>a show that barely has any of thatDid we watch the same show? The entire main plot was about a government conspiracy
And even apart from that it also had the relationship between Gento and Blazar, which was really fucking cool, I loved how they couldn't understand each other perfectly and occasionally were at odds with each other. I don't think any other Ultra show has ever had the Ultra and the host have conflicting goals like that and they really succeeded at making Blazar feel like a mysterious alien entity in doing so
That's another part of the reason I don't like the cameo trend, feels like they're humanizing the Ultras too much. I think Arc did a good job even though it made Arc speak. Hell I think Arc was actually the best written character in his show. He acted as a wordless guide most of the time somehow knowing things Yuma didn't. Every time he spoke, something significant was occurring. He would always communicate with Yuma in some supernatural way. I hope we get more of this and less of whatever the fuck was going on in Taiga and its ilk
>>23330215I did and those things were only done occasionally. Most of the time, they relegated to the typical MoTW plot. By the second half, they got sidelined for a half heart conspiracy plot that came down to a very sub par conclusion
I do empathize with your idea of not humanizing Ultraman, but unfortunately they didn't took complete advantage of that. There was no clear attempt of Gento trying to understand Blazar more after the Demaga episode, because they prefer doing military actions over it.
Blazar had a gold mine, but only tap the surface. While Orb, even with the fusion, it wasn't the main focus, the main story was of Gai conquering his past and moving forward. The Ultra Cards were stand in for the story mcguffin. It shows that you don't need to be isolated to make a good story, you just need to know how to write one
