This sucks actually
I enjoyed Wing more when I watched it this year
Anonymous No.23309811
How come?

I didn't like Turn A much, but I liked it more than Wing, and I've started to come around on both.
Anonymous No.23309836
Wing was a straight up obligation last time I watched it.
Turn A only hangs in the middle a little.

The truth of Turn A is this.
Gundam started out as a series that tried not to glorify war. Somewhere along the line, this changed, and the human cost stopped being felt. We watched because we wanted to see cool robots, piloted by heroic characters, beating all of the bad guys. CCA is a battle between Amuro and Char, with the backdrop just being Char's attempt to commit genocide. How often do you see reviews of shows where the quality of the battle scenes are highlighted?

Turn A is a rejection of that ethos. War isn't anything good, and there often aren't clear heroes or villains. The Militia is justified, the Moonrace is also justified. Only the absolute worst of the worst want war to break out.

The MS designs don't mesh well with other Gundam works. By design. Tomino deliberately sought out a designer who wouldn't follow the traditions already established in mecha anime. He sought out one who would create futuristic designs with some engineering feasibility. They don't fit in with Gundam by design.

The characters don't fit clear archetypes. Loran is voiced by a woman and dresses as a girl on occasion, and is often the voice of reason. Female characters like Sochie and Poe are often the aggressive ones. But it's not purely subverting stereotypes. Loran can grow indignant and forceful in stopping people. Sochie is prone to mood swings and rash decision-making. Poe has her crying episodes and notably does not handle bitter medicine well. People in the real world do not fall into neat stereotypes either.

The Moonlight Butterfly is one of the most visually striking things in the entire show, and among the most powerful weapons in the franchise. It is also unambiguously shown to be a horrible thing that ruins lives. Turn A isn't about glorifying death and destruction. It's about the underlying beauty of life.

Syd Mead designed the core units - the Turn A, the Turn X, the SUMO, the FLAT. the Wodom, the Bandit. The other designers then tried to create designs to fit into the same worldview as those. Tomino deliberately intended this as a challenge to them, as he felt Japanese mecha designers grew too complacent and just kept copying themselves.

That guy is specifically Syd Mead. He's better know for his work as the concept artist for Blade Runner, Tron, and Aliens. He also did work on Elysium and directly inspired some Star Wars designs with his industrial design work.
>>23311582
>Mead only did drafts
That's a lie. He designed the suits and other did some clean up work on them so they were a bit easier to animate. Pic rel are some of his concept sketches that he did by hand. You don't go out of the way to hire Mead to not use his stuff.

Do you have that story where Sys Mead is in a hotel in Japan and has an epiphany about how to finish the Turn X while naked under a blossoming Sakura tree? Because that was amazing.

I also recently saw a story on how his Tron bikes inspired Akira's bike then Mead sent him art of a redesigned Akira bike as a gift I can't seem to find at the moment

Turn A only really clicks if you've seen all of Tomino's Gundam series. Otherwise it's just a weird little thing that Sunrise likes to claim is the eventual fate of all Gundam stories, as if it were the Dark Souls 3 of Gundam.

>Q. You mentioned that you worked from the inside-out. Did you apply the same โ€œinside-outโ€ design philosophy with the Gundam?

>Yes, because first of all they build toys of them which have to hinge in a certain way. Secondly, in animation you can make an arm disappear partially into the chest as the arm comes around; you canโ€™t do that if itโ€™s a real physical piece of stuff, so I had to think about that. I was sensitive to the anime system of shading and color divisions. Thatโ€™s why the Gundam character has a hard line down the shin of the leg, for instance, and on the thigh so they can shade as a sharp line break as thatโ€™s how the style is. After the Gundam character was settled, then these other characters came into play for discussion to fulfill the story role. For the Dianna Counter suit I thought โ€œthis is a threatening thing from the Moon.โ€ It has a big head with a single eye which is really just a projector. And for that one, Tomino-san did want it to look not too mechanical, more organic, because they were growing these things on the Moon. So thatโ€™s why the legs have this sort of vein texture, and it isnโ€™t as sleek and mechanical as the other robots (heโ€™s talking about the WaDom here). I did a utility robot, very strange-looking thing. As the story progressed, Tomino-san wanted an enemy for the Gundam at the same technological level โ€” the Turn X.

>So I get the storyline from our liaison lady for the Turn X, and she said โ€œthis is crazy! This thing all comes apart and then goes back together again. The arms come off as fighter ships, and the legs come off; the thing that remains is the control center at the head and upper thorax.โ€ I thought โ€œwell thatโ€™s really weird.โ€ I was trying to think how do you lock and unlock the arm? I came up with a six-pronged thing, with three on each to lock together. So I fly over to Tokyo and Iโ€™m in the Akasaka Prince in my suite, and in about 10 days or so I did about 110 sketches of this Turn X and how it locked together and how it was supposed to look in scale to people and all that. So that goes into production, and when it was all over we had a wrap party in the suite. And then we went down to Izu, about 10 of us, on a celebration trip at a mountain inn. We had a kaiseki dinner, tables from here to that glass window, about 6-7 meters long. We had course after course after course and a big bottle of sake. It was a fantastic time. Then all the guys had a soaking hot water bath and went to bed. I woke up the next morning and Iโ€™m still thinking about the final details of this Turn Xโ€ฆ I throw open the windows in my room and the whole mountainside was pink โ€” it was sakura time. So I took a piece of paper and sketched all the final details of the Turn X. The finished details were really done under the inspiration of this pink mountainside of cherry blossoms.
