I watched all of Ideon, didn't end up liking it all that much.

Tried watching L-Gaim, got bored with it around 12 episodes in.

Are you from like...France, maybe know a few people that like and assume it isn't niche? Because MAL is a site where only a minority of users are from the US. There is still only 1500 full viewers for most brave anime compared to millions for Evangelion

back in my day you didn't get in through Gundam, that was fansub only in the USA
I started as a kid on Tranzor (Toeizinger mostly), as a weebling in my teens got into Robotech and got a fansub of DYRL fairly early, then Otaku no Video made a big deal out of this "Char" fella so I got a fansub of CCA figuring his Counterattack would be a good chance to see him doing stuff
but yeah there is a bit of a stereotype of "scifi fan" "robot fan" "gundam fan", like how there's scifi fans and trek fans, who won't touch a thing if it doesn't have the Trek universe attached
