I watched it yesterday.
You can really tell it was adapted from a book because there are a lot of oddly detailed scenic parts. The human parts looked great but the mecha portions just look like average modern day Gundam... And some of the dialog really was just fucking awkward. Gigi and Hathaway speaking to eachother had very bizzarre responses.

It made me crack open the wikia to learn the ending, which I kinda already knew but I probably wont care much if other parts get released because Hathaway getting done in by some magic EMP shit is a lame way for him to go plus the events that happen from where the movie went on up to it sound boring as piss. Gigi and Hathaway never fucked nor does it seem like Hathaway accomplished anything

One thing I appreciated a lot about this is how it portrayed the Penelope. Everything down to the sound design of it flying by really sold it as an intimidating presence. That night time raid scene in general was really great, definitely the best part of the movie. Best portrayal of the chaos mech battles can cause for civilians since F91.

This was a deliberate choice by Tomino. It was a commentary on the Cold War ending. The Age of Peace was coming.

In the late 80s and early 90s,The Soviet Union was desperately fighting to stay alive. But everyone knew it was over after the Soviet Union lost the war in Afghanistan. Riots and rebellions demanding freedom were happening all over the Soviet Union, and their economy was on the brink of bankruptcy. Nobody believed the Soviet Union was invincible anymore and it's intimidating aura was gone.

Back then, Tomino was extremely hopeful that the age of peace had finally come for the world.

Hathaway is supposed to represent those old Soviet Military Generals who were using force to put down rebellions, and desperately trying to keep the Cold War going. Even trying to launch a coup to form a military government. But they failed miserably and we're executed.

Hathaway couldn't let go of Quess and the past. He wanted to war to keep going. But Neo Zeon was gone. Even Char was gone. All the solders had gone home. Amuro's ghost warned Hathaway that if he continued on this path that it won't end well for him, and he won't succeed. That Hathaway should just find a good woman and go live a happy life. Hathaway refused. He was given multiple chances to leave cleanly and not get caught. So he loses and dies miserably and accomplished nothing. Like those Soviet Generals.

That's an interesting perspective. I don't know that I love it because it makes Hathaway feel a bit evil and certainly a failing of the newtype ideal. Hathaway is in fact a bitch for his little chimp out during CCA and should be judged and mocked for it, but I think by this point he earnestly tries to do the right thing as he understands it. I felt like it was more about the nature of exceptional individuals versus that of "the system" and the compromises you have to make between pragmatism and and idealism. There's also a little bit about the power of political mascots and martyrs. I should revisit the material because I might be talking out my ass after all these years, but I remember clearly having that impression.

You have to remember that Tomino was depressed at the time of writing the novel. He used the novel as a way to vent his frustrations about life as well as the Japanese animation industry.

Tomino wanted the Gundam story to end, and kept pushing for Bandai Sunrise to develop new ideas and new shows. Not to rely on Gundam. But the gunpla sales were just so good that Bandai kept demanding only more Gundam. It was like a drug to Bandai. So they kept throwing more money at Tomino to make more Gundam, and not letting Tomino develop other new anime ideas at Sunrise. It was very frustrating for Tomino. He felt trapped in endless Gundam and nothing else. He had a family (wife and 2 daughters) to support too, and reluctantly took Bandai's money to support his family. Especially since his daughters were in private school.

Hathaway's Flash was Tomino, in his own way, telling Bandai "no more!". The characters aren't heroic. The main character is a murderer, a simp, and a coward. And the story has no heroic end. No amazing final battle. It's just a bitter dark and sad end. The exact opposite of what Bandai wants. The mecha are also too huge and way too hard to animate (with 1990s animation techniques). It's basically a big middle finger to everything Bandai likes.

It's why Tomino said he was very surprised Bandai chose to make Hathaway's Flash. It's figurative Tomino taking a shit on the Gundam franchise. But Bandai is so desperate for more UC Gundam that they are animating Tomino's shit.

Tomino must be laughing about it in secret.

I liked it, watched it last weekend. Netflix needs to get the next one out.

I like how Hathaway is following his own path. It was a good idea not making him an Amuro or Bright clone.

The animation was wonderful, but was a bit light on mech action until the climax. Would like to see more battles.

Just recently watched the movie. I found it rather boring and not entertaining. Hathaway is not a compelling main character to me. I had to go back and rewatch CCA to understand Hathaway, and I still don't find him appealing. During Hathaway's Flash, it does not make sense why Hathaway keeps hanging around GiGi. They have no real connection. After the attempted heist in the first part of the movie, Hathaway should have just left and never seen them again. Why is he putting his entire Mafty organization at risk when he's their main pilot?

Lastly, the mecha battles were too dark!!! I understand they take place at night, but that doesn't mean the audience shouldn't be able to see the mobile suits or understand the action. Can someone please turn up the brightness? Tomino never had this problem with night battles.

Overall I give this movie a 6/10. The story is just too weak and doesn't really give a satisfying reason for me to follow Hathaway.
