There hasn't been a single memorable fight I can think of in the manga's final battle.

Every single fight is always interrupted, way too short, and a complete let down.

Even the hyped "Fed Zeong vs Perfect Gundam" was a disaster. They hyped it up for like 30 chapters.

Then then the fight actually happened, both suits just shot each other's i-Fields with beams a few times. Then clashed with their beam sabers like twice. Then Io in the Perfect Zeong ran away. That's it. Barely 1 chapter worth of a fight. That's all we got after 30 chapters of hype.

Then both suits are semi-destroyed when they are caught in the Colony laser blast.

I just don't understand what this author is thinking. Is he intentionally subverting every fight with a poor ending?

I actually think a giant underwater Doloss carrier is incredibly cool. It's a great idea.

The original anime never did much with submarine combat and controlling the ocean. After a few episodes of showing some water mobile suits, Zeon controlling the oceans was quickly forgotten by Tomino. So Thunderbolt giving the Zeon ocean mecha a "buff" is great.

However the problem with the Thunderbolt author is doesn't DO anything significant with it! It's featured in several chapters and then quietly destroyed.

That's how he does everything in this manga. After monk island is destroyed, the manga basically goes on autopilot.

1. Introduce cool design
2. Hype it up
3. Battle is a huge let down
4. Destroy cool design in boring way.


It would have been awesome to have a great underwater battle to destroy the Dolos carrier. Like a "Battle of A Boa Que" but with submarines and underwater suits. Like the Federation deciding once and for all to send all their submarines to eliminate Zeon from the oceans and destroy their Dolos super giant submarine carrier. Hundreds of Federation ships sent to destroy it. Would have been awesome.

Instead it's blown up by some Zeon traitors who want to defect. What a lame way to destroy a cool design!

Their Psycho Zaku VS FA Gundam battle was a tie. But Io became kind broken because he thought he should have won.

Their rematch on Monk Island, Daryl was using an unarmed prototype of the Psycho Zaku Mk II. It was literally a skeleton with no armor and only had a heat hawk axe. Meanwhile Io was using a fully armed Gundam Atlas. Io was losing until the Psycho Zaku prototype malfunctioned. Then Io became bloodthirsty and killed his girlfriend and became mind broke again. Io had to be rescued and ran away.

Then their first Perfect Psycho Gundam VS Perfect Zeong fight wasn't a tie. Io (and his 2 copilots) were losing badly against Daryl and his newtype abilities. Io was getting pushed back and needed to get help from a bunch of other pilots to help him. Io ran away afraid of Daryl


Then their second Perfect Psycho Gundam VS Perfect Zeong fight wasn't a tie either. Daryl was dominating Io (and his 2 co-pilots), and Io needed to run away and call for help from his teammates and half the fleet to push back Daryl in the Psycho Gundam.

Their next fought was in the Zeong head VS damaged Psycho Gundam.

Their final fight was just Io running away from Daryl. Daryl was in a Zaku 1 and Io had an anti-MS bazooka. Daryl was going to kill Io, but was saved at the very last second by outside forces helping Io.


So I guess the record is 1 tie and 5 losses. In favor of Daryl.

Honestly I have no idea why the author kept making them fight. Daryl was already much stronger than Io by their 2nd fight due to newtype power. Io became nothing more than a jobber like Jerid from Zeta Gundam

Daryl won that one fair and square. Io and his Gundam were captured. The only mistake here was not putting a bullet through Io's skull and end it right then and there.
Instead, he manages to escape captivity for bullshit reasons.

Both Daryl and Io are alive. But we don't know their exact status.

The author is devoting the remaining single chapters to giving us character epilogues. Each chapter is about a pilot. The recent one was about the Guntank pilots. Next will probably be other pilots. The last 2 chapters of the manga will probably be Daryl and Io.

About a year ago, the Sunrise producer, who worked on Thunderbolt, was asked about this. He said they want to wait until the manga 100% officially finished before making more Thunderbolt anime.

There was some Japanese fan backlash against Sunrise for the amount of material they cut from the Thunderbolt movies. Especially the Battle of A Boa Que. Bandai Sunrise got greedy and rushed the anime hoping to cash in quickly. So they cut a lot of scenes to fit everything into a 90 minute movie. Then the Thunderbolt author hurt his hand and needed to take a long break. So Bandai ran out of manga material and couldn't do anything.

Considering it's been over 10 years since the first Thunderbolt movie has been made, Bandai may decide to just re-animate everything from the beginning, and include all the cut scenes. Very similar to what they did with the Break Blade anime. They reanimated the first arc of the anime after the author took a long hiatus. So we have multiple Break Blade anime released and OVAs.
