-=READ THE GUIDES=-
Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!
For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!
For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!
And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.
>Why are my pictures sideways?4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:

-=ARTILLERY GROUPBUILD=-
Build a mecha or vehicle that uses long-range heavy-weapons such as Cannons, Missiles/Rockets, Railguns, or any other type of siege weaponry. Some clarifying rules
>The weapon can either be placed anywhere on the build (Shoulder-mounted, under-slung, etc), or in a separate side-build (Such as an artillery system utilized by a larger mech).
>Side-builds can include things like howitzers, self-propelled artillery, missile platforms, and the like.
>Alternatively, the mech can act as a spotter, loader, or some other role to support Artillery fire.
>Despite technically being a long-range weapon, Sniper Rifles are a no-go.
Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

Has anyone ever used AMMO's Cobra Motor paints on gunpla? I'm curious about how durable they are compared to using lacquers the traditional way; I'm willing to trade off a little bit if it means cutting back on the amount of fumes I need to deal with.

>>23319792You can just revive your varnish by mixing in thinner. Works better with solvent-based paints though. I once used a 12-year old bottle of alclad, given it wasn't dried up like gunk or anything. But I've also reconstituted some mr color paints just by mixing in mr. leveling thinner.

what are good ways to make white armor look more interesting than just a big white block? I don't like the look of darkened edge pre-shading and it's for the unicorn so I want to keep it unweathered. I'm thinking either giving each panel a slight gradient from off-white to pure white or doing the RG look where some panels are picked out in off-white
(the red leg is just because I saw zakuaurelius do it once and I think it's a cool look)
>>23322239the solvent that dissolved the plastic is evaporating off
I remember someone here saying itโs better to topcoat your models with a satin varnish because itโs more in-scale, but I canโt remember if that was compared to a gloss or matte finish.
>>23322259matte
look at long distance shots of a fighter jet in the air, it looks satin despite being matte
>>23322254w-why is he pointing his gun at me
>>23322239Plastic cement is a chemical cocktail with some plastic mixed into it. When it hits the plastic of your kit, it further melts the plastic on your kit and creates a semi-homogenous slurry. The solvent part of the cement evaporates off at room temperature because it's very volatile, like acetone, and you get a solidified plastic mass. It's not as strong as the original piece because the evaporation and curing leaves a non-uniform macromolecular structure behind, or at least far less uniform than when it was formed under 10 tons of pressure in the plastic molding machine.
>>23322292nalhodo
does it really need 24h to cure though
>>23322245Dunno, but surely not the sw sequel approach
>>23322321depends on the type of cement. thin types like tamiya and other modelling brands require like, 20-60 seconds to dry, but to fully cure (for sanding and the like) it takes few hours. The non-thin types take a bit longer
>>23322245The simplicity is the whole appeal. You don't need anything more.
>>23322245I would suggest against messing with the Unicorn's basic color scheme. I personally wouldn't try to complicate the color scheme any more, and especially not the RG two-tone shit. Unicorn has enough interesting shapes and lines in its design already that it doesn't really need tons of color variation Just make sure the finish lets those stand out. A slight off or grayish white will also make the design less blinding to look at and let the details pop out better.
My poor work habits finally caught up to me and now I'm missing one of the verniers from one of my Artifact kits. Shaping a new one is not going to be fun.

solvent evaporation depends on the ambient humidity and temperature, having constant airflow over the evaporating solvent (e.g. a fan or aircon) will speed it up especially when the ambient humidity is high
it shouldn't take longer than an hour unless your ambient conditions are really bad
how clean does a nub mark have to be for it to not show through primer/paint? and, will minor gouges and oversanding show through primer or do i need to fix those with sprue goo or something first?
>>23322386nobody pronounces "rg" as "real grade". it's "arr jee"
>>23322552lower grit surfacers (1000 or lower) should cover up any sanding scrach marks, unless you're going for a gloss finish in which case low grit sanding will result in a satin finish unless you go really thick with the gloss
gouges will always show though surfacer, fill any gouges with a low grade surfacer like mr surfacer 500 applied with a toothpick or something like tamiya white putty then sand it flat before spraying your higher grit surfacer

>>23322555NTA, but when using mr surfacer 500 to remove seams, do I have to work it into the seams? Or do I just paint over them and sand when dry?
>>23322817Huh I was considering it, sanding it down doesnt help? Bought the char origin one and it was pretty good just got the Nobell knockoff.
>>23322827Nothing I have done works. Everything is just off enough that it doesn't want to fit together and when it does, it feels bad. I have been working on this thing for 3 days now and I've gotten to the waist.
>>23322829Just cement everything.
>>23322840They won't physically go where they belong. I would be fine doing that if they would go where they belong to begin with.
>>23322826apply it with a toothpick, you shouldn't need to "work it in", sand it level before spraying your finer grit surfacer or paint
>>23322798so arr jee, that's what i said
This is it for me lads. My experiment with sprue goo on a Titans Mk 2 went even worse than expected.
I am going to kill myself tonight. I'm sure grown men have killed themselves over less.
>>23322867sprue goo is a meme, just use mr surfacer 500 or any other thin putty like tamiya white and paint over it
>>23322885Yeah I was using sprue goo because I wanted to take the lazy way around seam removal and not having to paint it. Now I'm gonna have to paint anyway except I'm a lot angrier about it.
>>23322867>grown men have killed themselves over lessAnd you'd be right. Grown men have killed themselves over women plenty of times
>>23322867I mean probably. If the police find you in the closet with a rope, make sure your gunpla are posed around you.

>>23319751Resumed working on the Ordine Moderoid and I'm currently brushpainting the waist area, Tamiya enamel chrome silver feels is perfect for all the silver engravings on this guy.
I've also started varnishing by hand with Vallejo Mecha Varnish because it's way cheaper than buying rattle cans and the results are surprisingly better than using MrHobby's cans (acrylic)
>>23322909Nice, what's your handbrush technique?
Paintfags, how long do you usually spend on nub removal? Do you just sand it down to a rough spot and go? Or do you step up through grits like you would if you weren't painting?
>>23322777plug it in
connect hose to regulator (the thing with the pressure gauge on it)
connect other end of hose to airbrush
switch it on
the compressor will automatically turn off when the tank pressure reaches a certain pressure, and turn back on when the pressure becomes low
turn the knobs on the top of the regulator to adjust the output pressure somehow... I never figured this part out
use the ring pull on the side after switching the compressor off to release the pressure in the tank for safe storage
>>23322959If you're painting all that matters is surface smoothness. You can have all the stressmarks in the world if you're just gonna prime and cover with paint anyways.
>>23322959I just sand it until the surface feels smooth.
>>23322817You know you've got real chinesium on your hands if every time you touch the assembled parts they all squeak and shift slightly.
>>23322959I use a blade to cut as close to flat as possible, then finish off with a glass file. Each nub takes 20-30 seconds at the very most, and only if they're in problematic locations.
>>23322959Literally don't care. Gonna cover whatever the nub marks or stretches with putty anyway.

>>23322817>Buy bootleg expected anything more than a bootleg.Thats why I stopped buying bootlegs, it just ruins the building experience.
>>23322817Generally the smaller the original gunpla kit, the more fucky the bootleg will probably be.
>>23322926I primarily paint with acrylics and use a ceramic palette with 2-3 drops of thinner (wet palette is just a warhammer meme).
I use Vallejo, Italeri, AK and Acrysion paints for Acrylics and Tamiya X- for Enamels.
The thing to look out for when handpainting is how much you've loaded your brush: too much paint hides details and causes visible strokes so you need to put very little paint on the brush, I recommend brushing your hand to check for the right amount: if you can see skin detail where you've brushed then paint you are good to go.
When painting metallics on larger surfaces I find that Drybrushing over black works really well, ideally over a very smooth surface like the one you can get with Mr Surfacer 1500.
For small details I just brush it on like normal, I never thin metallics when painting them. The Acrysion line of acrylic metallics is my favorite, good metallics are thin out of the bootle.
I also recommend using enamels on top of acrylics for small details such as engravings because enamel thinner does not really affect cured acrylics (just don't be a retard and avoid drowning your kit in it) so you can easely erase mistakes as you would do when panel lining.
Also brush soap or conditioning/cleaning fluid is essential if you want your brushes to last more than one week: metallics and especially metallic enamels will fuck your brushes pretty badly if you don't clean them immediately after use.

What's the best sanding sponge for wet sanding that you guys know of/are using? I used Tamiya sanding sponges before but prices for them are insane now. I got some other random brand but it just falls apart during wet sanding.

>>23324123He's using translucent paints, so what's underneath them stays visible and just gets tinted with the colour. That means the colour ends up showing very strongly over the white areas, whereas you can hardly see them over the black areas. Same principle as preshading, but more extreme

>>23324136120 and 140 grit is for woodworking or removing foot calluses. It's way too rough for models.
>>23324112While static, gaming models also need to be really durable because they are handled and move around a lot, drop from tables, etc. The top coating of sealant is really important for overall durability when using acrylics. I wouldn't underestimate the durability of polyurethane sprays. If it's strong enough to be used for outdoor patio furniture, it can absolutely protect models too.
1000 grit barely does anything, what tf do you use 4000 for
>>23324199beyond 1000 grit is used for buffing. for like ultra smooth surfaces. clear parts also
>>23324201What's the point when you're going to prime with 1000-1500 grit surfacer anyway
>>23324222It is honestly pure suffering to be a snapfiend at this point. Almost every problems like nub marks, stretch marks, sanding marks, stickers, incorrect colors go away if you just paint the kit.
>>23324229painting is a new skill set and very intimidating for people who have never done it, and large models with articulation is a very challenging place to start with painting.
>>23324229It's almost as if they've developed an entirely parallel set of skills to make their models look good that you haven't
>>23324272>It's almost as if they've developed an entirely parallel set of skills to make their models look goodThe said skills:
>>23324269I get that there are people who don't want to paint at all, but at a certain point when they have already went through alot of shit like markers, sanding, topcoat and bunch of other bizzare tricks, why not just paint the kit? It is literally same amount of troubles but less embarrassing.
>>23324276It's also a high entry cost. Airbrushes are cheaper now, but it used to be that a quality airbrush and compressor would easily add up to 200 on it's own, then add in flow improver, cleaner, distilled water, the cost of model grade paints, brushes, brush cleaner, etc, and it adds up to a lot... can easily spend 500+ dollars just to get started. Tabletop miniatures can get away with just brush painting a lot easier because the models are so much smaller, and the popular painting styles are different.
>>23323665Its serviceable at least. I'm afraid to buy an HMM Shield/Blade Liger by comparison. Have you tried any of the 1/100 line yet? Are those the RMZ?
>>23324286That sounds like spending issues from your end. You blew your load on a premium level airbrush, and then gimmick items like flow improver and distilled water. Use paint thinner to clean your brushes and learn how to thin your paint without retarder and flow improver. Optimize your shit.
>>23324276>why not just paint the kit?good paint is banned in yurop and i didn't like airbrushing acrylics so I stopped
>>23324286>It's also a high entry cost.Kow Yokoyama made Maschinen Krieger with bunch of poorly thinned acrylic paint and spoons.
Makoto Kobayashi started his modeling career by picking up toys from the garbage bin because he had no money.
>>23324269as someone who was once a snapshitter, no it isn't. it's an exciting opportuntity to improve your models and avoid all the bullshit that comes along with trying to make a "perfect" snapshit
>>23324286if you can afford models, you can afford to invest in a compressor, airbrush, and paint. even if you aren't the type to amass a backlog, painting will make each kit last longer so if you plan on being in the hobby for any length of time it's objectively a good investment in terms of cost per kit or hour
>>23324305I bought my airbrush in 2016 and I have yet to replace it. The other stuff I accumulated slowly over two decades, much of it before I bought an airbrush. If I were just getting into modeling now I would have bought things differently, and in a different order. For one, I would never buy any warhammer ever. I would have also spent a bit extra on the airbrush to get a real Iwata instead the we-have-an-Iwata-at-home that I actually did buy.
>>23324315I have always been envious of scratch builders and kitbashers who can look at bottles, containers, whatever and see parts rather than trash. >>23324330I envy the people with the patience and skill to do that level of making and get suck clean results. I am not equipped for that
>>23324328Scratch modeler can get away with alot of things because they actually paint to hide the absolute abomination made from water bottles, broken lighters and some chinese toy they bought for 5 cents. What's matter is the presentation, not how expensive your tools are.
>>23324336I mean.. that's autistic levels of patience. He could've just burnished the tape.
>>23324305you know the saying, buy chink and you buy twice. a "premium" level (really just an entry levelโฆ) airbrush is an investment and if you get a good one you shouldn't need to upgrade for a decade if ever. flow improver is almost a necessity if you use shitcrylics, but yeah they should just use lacquers instead
>>23324354Acrylics are going to have a 100x larger range of available colors compared to lacquers depending on where you live, and if you also do any brush painting having 1 type of paint that can be used for both is nice. But it does have its limitations.
>>23324354Acrylic is not the boogeyman people making it out to be. Just thin it and you will be good to go.
>>23324369The only downside of acrylic is how it has weak adhesion to the surface. But then again, it is a model, not a toy. You paint the model and leave it static.
>>23324330lol fuck this i'm handpainting the whole thing
it's a lot less daunting than masking when you figure out you can just correct the fuckups
>>23324370i used acrylics (vallejo, armypainter, and greenstuffworld) for about 1.5 years before switching to lacquers and while they're perfectly usable when you figure out how to thin them well etc etc they're just so inferior that they're not really worth using for airbrushing. i still use them for brush painting details but i'd never put them through an airbrush again when i can just use lacquers
>>23324387All i care about is that they give colors and universal for both ABS and PS.
>>23324394i've never had a single issue painting abs with lacquers, you people seem to think that lacquers will disintegrate abs at the slightest touch but if your painting technique isn't complete 50iq retard tier you don't even have to adjust it to paint abs with lacquers
>>23324373That's not the only downside, they're more prone to spraying poorly if you mess up ratios, you have to deal with tip drying, they don't do well with heavy coats, they're slower to work with in some regards because of the long curing time compared to how quickly lacquers dry, and they almost universally have matte finishes which is not ideal for mecha models
Plus no acrylic varnish can compare to Mr Color Super Smooth Clear
>>23324406>they almost universally have matte finishes which is not ideal for mecha modelsSo it is a good type of paint, then.
>>23324407>So it is a good type of paint, then. It's good for what it's designed for but it's shit for mecha since it just adds extra steps (and thicker paint layers) to getting a perfect gloss surface for decals and panel lining. There's a reason why Vallejo mecha colors specifically aren't matte.
>>23324410You are saying it like every mecha builds have to be glossy or else, it is incorrect.
>>23324330>https://youtube.com/shorts/VQs05APu7dQ?si=aOXF5z6WWj8IYgbiCompared to the handpaint chad.
>>23324414No, I'm saying that for the panel lining and decal application step, a glossy surface is necessary unless you want the result to look like shit. Sure, you can just spray gloss varnish over the matte acrylic, but you'd rather just have the paint layer itself be glossy. Your final topcoat layer dictates the model's finish afterwards anyway.

And for handpainting small details is it enamels?
>>23324547Main trouble with enamels is local availability, they're the easiest for just filling in solid colors on details due to their self leveling properties and ease of cleaning up without damaging the underlying paint, but in the US you're basically stuck with Testors for enamels.

Just bought an Iwata and airbrush booth, gonna stock up on lacquers as well.
>>23324547>>23324716Lacquers for airbrushing and enamels for hand details, yes. It is possible to use enamels for airbrushing, but they take forever to dry and cure. Tamiya is probably the best you can get for enamels, though Revell also produces them. Tamiya doesn't need to be thinned before painting, while Testors and Revell does.
Don't buy hobby grade enamel thinner, it's overly expensive for the volume you get and can be a bit on the strong side. Just buy a bottle of lighter fluid or mineral/white spirits, that's basically the same thing.
>>23324737Oh awesome. I tried handpainting with some Vallejo acrylics and wasn't a fan of how prone to scratching off it was.
I have a bottle of Tamiya black and lighter fluid already, and not having to thin it is a big plus. I'll give it a try.
Any suggestions for lacquers? So far Mr. Color seems to be the best, same with GaiaNotes (but apparently the latter's hard to find in the US).
>>23324716>I live near a big Gunpla hobby store that has a bunch of Tamiya paintsWhich ones? The enamel paints are the ones in the taller bottles, not the flat round ones.
>>23324754Mr Color and Gaia both have their own advantages and you should use both when appropriate but GSI Creos has a better international distribution network so Mr Color is usually cheaper, but its main drawback is that its regular color range is a little outdated and it has a few too many Aqueous-exclusive colors. Gaia is very overpriced outside of Japan, but has a better selection of anime colors and is a bit higher quality compared to most of the Mr Color range, plus it has some more gimmicky paints that other brands don't have a good equivalent for.
>>23324754Acrylics are primarily for hand-painting miniatures, they're delicate because they're water-soluble to facilitate painting multiple light glaze layers and mixing with each other on a palette, and once you're done you're supposed to lock it in with top coat.
For lacquers, GSI Creos is the most commonly available and isn't bad for Gundam (I'm pretty sure they're official partners with Bandai or somesuch). Gaia can be purchased at webstores (USA Gundam Store, Newtype, Mecha Warehouse), though with online ordering you're encouraged to buy in bulk so you don't get raped out the ass on shipping charges. Also, different webstores charge different amounts so you'll have to shop around a bit to find the best retailer.
>>23324754>>23324773One more point about Gaia, arguably its biggest flaw is that many stand-out colors from its range are collab colors which are very difficult to find in the west due to licensing issues. They also have "premium" colors only sold at events and not available at retail, so unless one becomes popular enough to enter regular production the west won't ever get to see it.
>>23324526Get something other than gundamshit
>>23324760Gundam Place Store. I misremembered actually and I have the small round Tamiya which is a semi-gloss acrylic apparently. Gonna drive over this weekend and see if they carry enamels though since they're pretty well stocked on paints.
>>23324773>>23324775>>23324780Awesome, appreciate the help and advice. Probably gonna have to learn to mix paints in the future, but for now I'll stick to the colors I buy. Looking forward to starting my painting journey soon; gonna try participating in the next group build!
cant wait for the happy meal toy mfs to come out the woodwork for this post
>>23324802There's a shitload of secondary supplies you'll want to consider beyond the compressor, spray booth, cleaning pot and respirator mask:
A bunch of small glass jars (around the 14mL range) for storing mixed paint
Steel pipe cleaner set for cleaning out your airbrush parts
Glass eye droppers for transferring paint and thinner
A shitload of alligator clips on sticks for holding your parts as they dry (you can also Plasti-Dip the teeth to keep them from scratching up your parts)
Hobby grade masking tape (Tamiya is the gold standard)
Generic Walmart Astroglide (it's basically bulk-buy airbrush needle lubricant)
A few nail polish racks for holding your paint jars
Big square latch lid jars at around the 100mL range to hold your thinners to make it easier to access without having to constantly open and close the big tins (I got a few at Michaels)
Super Clean (automotive section of Walmart, it strips paint and primer super good without damaging the plastic)
Lots of these are varying degrees of optional, but I've found a use for everything on this list.
>>23324833You are proving his point to be true.
>broke small but important piece
>barely got it back together with a fuckton of CA glue
>looks terrible and not even sure if i'll be able to get it cleaned up enough to be worth painting
>plamokitbash doesn't have any of this piece in stock
Is there another place to get single replacement parts or runners in burgerland or am I just fucked?
>>23324891Scratchbuild it if it isn't too complex. 3D print it if it is. Insert metal pins in both cases if it's stress-bearing.
>>23323482Are you going to go for a more organic look on this one?
>>23324896>3D print it if it isI'm an idiot, how did I not think of that
Is there a repository of the runners/kits anywhere or will I have to try getting a model myself? I remember Gundam Breaker getting everything ripped a while back but dunno if anything ever came of it
>>23324937Yeah, totally a woman.

What's the active ingredient in Purple power that strips chrome plating?
>>23324937Holy THICC she a baddie
>Digimon has multiple Figure-Rises from different series
>Yu-Gi-Oh still stuck on "Remember Duel Monster?"
I hope they'll move on to GX or 5Ds after releasing Slifer
>>23325037You can not imagine my surprise that Shine Greymon got a kit. Sure he's a Greymon, but usually War Greymon and Omegamon are the ones getting all the spotlight.
>I hope they'll move on to GX or 5Ds after releasing SliferWe don't even have a Dark Magician yet.
Accesscode Talker looks pretty good though.
P-Bandai Gundam Base limited Labubu model kit when?
>>23324518He thinned his paints
>>23324469Never used any products from GODRay, but I would assume they are quality. Price seems good also but I'm pretty sure shipping would destroy my wallet: If I ever order from the guy I'll probably buy some of these paints
>>23325039Even Frontier is getting something now, which is a pleasant surprise. Now to see whether they're willing to do something for Xros in the future.
Isopropyl alcohol strips lacquer yeah? So how would I clean up panel lines if not with that? Wouldn't I just be damaging the finish?
>>23324891odinโs mecha parts, or mr baoโs shop on ebay
but their stock is also not great sometimes
>>23324534Yeah Ive been waiting a long god damn time for a reprint of that kit.
>>23325050bro, ur lighter fluid?
>>23325050Who tf cleans panel lines with iso? I use white spirit but any enamel thinner/lighter fluid should work.
>>23324526they have tons of shit in stock if you look at anything other than gundam
>>23325107>>23325111Would that strip the lacquer?
