What is your favorite /m/ OVA? The first OVA I ever watched was the Kikaider one they aired on Toonami. It's been 25 years, but this bitch still lives rent free in my head. I really appreciate the retro style of Ishinomori, and the OST was great as well. Of course, in 25 years I've never gone back and rewatched it in fear that it won't live up to my memories.

War in the Pocket. It's a classic pick (if overdone) but it's genuinely a beautiful OVA. The fights are cool, the characters are lovable, the child protag is actually endearing instead of obnoxious like most movies and shows, and the ending is heartbreaking. It's also incredibly short so it gets bonus points, a lot of similar OVAs need more episodes to pull off what it did.
I only wish that the Kampfer and Hygogg showed up in more stuff, since they're just amazing.

I can't decide between Gunbuster and Giant Robo The Day The Earth Stood Still. Zeorymer and Dangaioh are pretty great too and I have a soft spot for Dragon's Heaven because I love the Moebius inspiration and Kobayashidesigns.

Honorable mention to New Adventures of Byston Well because it has some of my favourite mechanical designs ever...but the animation is not good so I can't say it's a good OVA.

I am really bad at narrowing favourites down.

Well since all my other favorites have been mentioned, I'm just gonna say MD Geist 1. Not a hint of irony in my enjoyment whatsoever, sometimes all a man needs is about an hour of badass shit to get through the day. The vocal tracks are sick and while the animation isn't the best, the designs for the power armor are cool and the fights are least choreographed well enough. Geist's an interesting protagonist in that he's just a complete psycho with no nuance or anything, he just wants to kill people and the story knows that. MD Geist 2 however isn't very good, just a complete downgrade in every way despite having higher stakes than the first one with the Death Force going around. The only good part of it was Krauser's death because it was really funny.

Although in another direction, it'd be Kowarekake no Orgel. Nothing like a show that makes you wanna curl up in a ball and die when it's over, you know? It just does everything right to make the ending hit you in the gut in the best possible way.

LOGH, Giant Robo, Gunbuster, Getter Robo Armageddon, possibly in that order

I remember really really disliking the child protag but I'm glad someone else wasn't frustrated with him. I'll try giving him a chance during a rewatch, considering how the OVA goes.

>just some 28-minute OVA and a 33-minute movie version of this thing I either never heard of or completely overlooked
How hard could it possibly hurt

Science fantasy glam rock adventure. It is neat. There's swords and robots and a tasty amount of thigh.

I have bittersweet feelings about it, I'm curious as to why you picked that one out of all the Votoms OVAs, let alone /m/ OVAs of all time

I'd recommend it, I personally love War in the Pocket since it does a really good balance of the mecha action and the downtime. Al is a kid but he isn't completely stupid, just naive. I felt really bad for him at the end.
Also it has the Kampfer and one of the only instances of a Zaku destroying a Gundam.

If only there was a way one could find out. Seriously anon, just give a watch, it's a good sad robot story. Maybe I'm just easily moved by stuff like that.

Al was just really really grating at the start with his naivety and somehow having a "war is good, wow cool robot" mentality. Which like... yeah, he's a kid, we all were. It was annoying but not something insanely unreasonable or non-human. The OVA did have that good balance of action and downtime as you say, the only disappointing thing worth mentioning would be seeing and hearing about the Kampfer and having it go down rather quickly. I understand that it's a glass cannon, but I was within my own "wow cool robot" mindset as well.

I was hyping myself up for this sad story, reminds me of the Planetarium visual novel (I think there might be a movie or an anime now), wasn't expecting to actually care that hard or feel so bad.

It has a better story, so it's not frustrating to me like Part 2 and it's not incomplete like Part 1. I can see why people don't like Part 3 -- it has worse animation -- but in terms of story it's far superior. I also like how the mecha look sleeker and have more exposed parts in Part 3. There's also the soundtrack, which is very cool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_wIWWFRm-E

The story ends on a cliffhanger, which is a shame because it has great art direction and premise. Part 2 finishes the story poorly since it leans too heavily into shock value, which results in the runtime being wasted on gratuitous gore and leading up to a unnecessary downer ending.

I can see how that'd be grating, I just saw it as a kid who loved robots and war movies. I remember being a kid and thinking that soldiers and tanks, as well as giant robots, were the best thing ever.
It fits since he later realizes how horrible war actually is.

I agree on the Kampfer though, it's a beautiful design and the sort of mecha I'd expect a protagonist or overarching antagonist to use. Reminds me of a slimmed down Sazabi, it's still one of my favorites and I hope we can see it in action in UC again someday.

I misunderstood you then. I think it takes real talent to make a story like that as effective as it is in a short time frame. I've watched things triple the length of Orgel that made me feel less than it did.

It's not a cliffhanger. A ton of Yakuza and delinquent media ends like that too with the hero beaten up and left to stagger off. They never even planned to do more.

My first OVA was Endless Waltz and I don't care much for it these days. But Kikaider is still one of my favorites and I revisit it often. This is a TV series, by the way, the OVA is the sequel Kikaider 01. I would recommend reading the original manga and then rewatching it. Make sure to watch the 2-episodes Re-Edition for Kikaider 01 because it has plenty of animation fixes compared to the original 4-episodes release. You can find it on Nyaa.

They did, sorta. IIRC Megazone 23 was supposed to be a 26 episode show sort of like Macross.

I'm not sure what my first OVA was, much less my first /m/ one
might have been Macross II on both fronts? def would have been a commercial VHS release, I think I saw MII at somebody's house half paying attention while I was still getting into weebing?
thinking a bit more first OVA might have been Devil Hunter Yohko or Outlanders?
You're Under Arrest was first one I bought pretty sure

fav I'd probably go at the moment with 0080, it's got a great mix of wow cool robot and good drama
MADOX-01 is a really fun romp too

Hey anons, I really appreciate the picks here. I'm going to watch all of these later on, I trust your judgement.
It's always nice to discuss what you love, even better when it involves giant robots.
